Family Therapy in Tampa, FL
Life can be challenging. Relationships, family, school, work, and other stressors can feel overwhelming. Sometimes we can do everything “right” and things still don’t go as we wish. Don’t struggle alone. Amy knows what it is like to face the uncertainties of life, which is why she is passionate about creating a non-judgmental space where you can feel seen and heard. She is gifted as a natural empath and has a unique ability to challenge her clients to dig deeper while supporting them with the necessary tools and unconditional regard necessary for them to explore and find their answers within.

I offer individual, family, and couples psychotherapy.
Let me join you on your journey to mental and emotional wellness. We often struggle to cope with life’s stressors and feel as if we have little control over our mental health issues. This can lead to feeling detached and disconnected in many ways. You may seek to learn ways to improve your sense of self and relationships, as well as bring you closer to what gives you meaning and purpose. This can include enhancing self-awareness, processing difficult experiences and emotions, and/or developing secure connections with others. In doing so, you can feel stronger and safer, and experience more fully what you value in your life.

Establish healthier boundaries with coworkers, family, and friends.
You've been taking care of others for as long as you can remember. You’ve always sacrificed your own well-being to help those around you. A friend broke up with her partner, so you’re the shoulder to cry on. There was a problem with a client at work, so you fixed it. Your husband and kids rely on you for everything from getting dressed to eating meals. “As long as everyone else is happy,” you tell yourself, “Then I’m fine.” But you’re not fine. You’ve completely lost touch with yourself and don’t have the time or energy to find your way back. You’re filled with guilt whenever you try to take a moment for yourself. It feels hopeless.

I view relationship problems from a systemic model. Meaning that I take into account environmental factors, relationship factors, family of origin, biological, mental, and spiritual factors when creating a treatment plan. From this approach new understanding and new solutions are opened up for the relationship. Too often in our problem solving we try the same thing over and over and when it does not work we just try the same thing harder. If you find yourself stuck in that kind of negative cycle just know that you are not alone and that there is help available. I work from an evidence based approach called EFT in a intensive format.

I am a caring, knowledgeable, and well-trained therapist who truly enjoys working with clients. If you are willing to partner we can achieve the results you are looking for. I am educated in the following treatment modalities: individual, couple, and family therapy. I am also certified to treat both substance and process addictions. Although trying to achieve full-time 'happiness' may be a fool's errand, I do believe that finding peace, contentment and well-being with self is the cornerstone for a life that can be both satisfying and robust.

We believe in the hopeful possibilities within relationships, the healing process when things are not going so well, and we understand the difficult impact of uncoupling on the individual and the extended family.
We (Rashawn & Lori Brewster) offer a unique "couple to couple" counseling experience for relationships in all stages (dating, engaged, married, separated). Typical couples/marriage counseling is with 1 therapist but with Elevating Relationships you work with a married co-therapist team. We support relationship issues such as poor communication, harmful conflict cycle, loss of trust, feeling disconnected, and lackluster intimacy. We will partner with you to highlight the areas of your relationship that you’re not experiencing success in and provide research-based tools and guidance designed to cultivate an improved relationship.

My goal is to ensure the evaluation process is individualized for your child and beneficial for your family.
Sometimes understanding your child's learning, behavior, and/or social-emotional needs and how to help can be a challenge. But taking the first step in supporting your child is the most important one. In order to best help your child, a comprehensive psychological evaluation may be beneficial. Whether to better understand your child's strengths and weaknesses or to assist in treatment planning, early identification can reduce and prevent long-term negative outcomes. I specialize in the assessment of and treatment planning for children ranging from early childhood through early adulthood to help families better support their child.

Whether it's navigating toddler temper tantrums, developing parenting skills, choosing a therapist to help your child, and/or determining what special learning needs your child has, I'm here to support you, your child, and your family as you learn new skills to help.
As a parent, do you find yourself wondering, 'am I doing everything that I can to support my child and his or her success?' When it comes to working with children, it can be hard to know how to provide the best support for academic, behavioral, and social-emotional development. I want to take this moment to express gratitude that you're taking the first step to seek out support for your child and your family. I'm here to help! Calling a school psychologist and parent coach may feel intimidating, but I hope that you take a moment (and maybe a deep breath) to call and see how I can help and support you and your family.

In addition to couple and sexual issues, I am skilled at working with clients who have general psychotherapy goals they want to address, including work/life balance, family of origin stress, couple communication standoffs, depression, and anxiety.
My therapeutic approach is derived from a combination of cognitive-behavioral and systemic techniques. Each interaction is addressed in relation to habitual patterns that may have become stuck or conflictual, and a systemic therapist makes interventions to help the client (s) consciously make healthier choices to create more intimacy or functionality in these relationships. I have been in private practice for over 10 years, helping couples and individuals with their relationship conflicts and psychiatric challenges as well as their desires for improved communication and intimacy.

Family Therapy
What do family therapists do?
A family therapist facilitates the process of understanding and improving how a family functions. The therapist will help family members develop empathy for one another. They’ll seek to understand existing patterns, misunderstandings, and conflicts that arise, in order to help the family arrive at a realistic, unified understanding and develop the coping skills they need to build stronger relationships.
How long does therapy for families take to work?
Therapy manifests differently in every family; a common time frame is 12 weekly sessions, but some families may see improvement after just a few weeks. Families should discuss their goals with the therapist at the beginning of the process and periodically revisit those goals to assess their progress together.
How can you encourage a family member to attend family therapy?
You can encourage family members to attend therapy by expressing with both love and concern the challenges you see and explaining how a therapist could help the family navigate those challenges together. An outside perspective can help everyone feel heard, get on the same page, and develop new skills. If family members are still hesitant, it may be helpful to emphasize that family therapy is short-term—it won’t last forever.
Is therapy for families effective?
Family therapy can significantly improve family dynamics and relationships. Research suggests that family therapy can help individuals understand their role in the family, communicate and solve problems together, reduce conflict and draw boundaries when necessary, and develop coping skills for stressors, major life changes, and mental or physical illnesses within the family.
