Do you feel stuck, unhappy? Lost? You are doing all you can to be productive and motivate yourself, but it is not gratifying and you don't know why? Or you are satisfied financially but not personally? This can provoke anxiety symptoms and feeling low. The struggle can be unbearable for anyone. If you are also using illicit substances or even drinking.more often, this is not uncommon. Research indicates use of substances is directly linked to dealing with life stressors- to reduce anxiety, sadness and pain. I provide a safe environment where you can talk freely-without judgement or scrutiny. Sliding scale offered due to pandemic.

It is essential to note that there are certain mental health conditions that work against maximizing the value and investment in meaningful relationships. I work with individuals and families who are suffering due to a variety of mental health issues through my therapeutic consulting practice. Specializing in adolescents and young adults who are suffering with substance abuse, I take a holistic approach to healing – engaging not only the individual but those loved ones who also suffer through many of the destructive patterns of the disease.

Hi! First, congratulations for taking the first step in your healing journey. I know it can be overwhelming to trust others with our pain specially when you have learned to survive on your own. How wonderful it would be to lift that weight off your shoulders and finally feel at ease. I am a trained clinical social worker who specializes in complex trauma. Sometimes we may use substances to numb our emotional pain, we may lash out at those we love, we may parent in a way we always said we wouldn't. Healing will be draining, hard and exhausting but if you go through it, you will see the light in you that refused to surrender.

Emotional pain goes by various labels--anxiety, depression, low self-esteem, unrewarding relationships, addiction, etc--but it has common pathways. Otherwise there would be no treatment for it. No one wants to feel pain. It hurts, by definition. But can you use your emotional pain to motivate yourself to address the the issues that cause it in the first place? Can you learn to reflect, understand, and respond versus react to your pain and flee from it? It takes time, but re-training your thinking and behavior can yield valuable benefits if you're willing to invest in yourself.

I believe sex can be a healing act. We can enjoy great orgasmic sex not only at a physical level but at a spiritual level. I love working with clients who want to take sex to the next level. To reach levels where sex can unite and heal as well. States of true bliss were each person is able to experience their loved one at a core level. Also, I enjoy working with individuals and couples that struggle with a physical limitation that has changed the dynamic of sex in their lives.

As a licensed psychologist, I can help you become aware of your obstacles and move through them. Personal growth often requires recovering from past hurt and learning how to behave differently. This is a process that requires a trusting, nonjudgmental relationship. In treatment, my overarching goal is to provide a warm and supportive environment for you to explore your inner self and make lasting change. Although the prospect of change can feel daunting, most people find therapy to be tremendously helpful. Often the process requires setting new boundaries and prioritizing the self in the face of demanding schedules.

Substance Use Therapists
How do substance and drug recovery or rehabilitation programs work?
In inpatient programs, individuals live in a facility with other clients in recovery; in outpatient programs, individuals reside at home. These facilities are staffed with healthcare professionals including physicians, nurses, psychologists, counselors, and psychotherapists. Staff often also includes people who have recovered themselves, serving as mentors and guides. These programs may use abstinence, harm reduction, detoxification, psychotherapy, and other methods.
How do 12-step programs combined with psychotherapy work?
Members of 12-step programs help each other reach abstinence and work to maintain it. These programs promote complete change in the individual’s emotional, mental, physical, and even spiritual perspectives. Some programs require that new members attend 90 meetings in 90 days. Many people do attend these programs in conjunction with their work in psychotherapy; the combination of therapy along with 12-step can be extremely effective.
How does harm reduction combined with psychotherapy work?
According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, harm reduction prevents death, injury, disease, overdose, and substance misuse. People who choose harm reduction for substance use reduce the amount of drugs they consume. It is not abstinence-based like a 12-step program, but combining harm reduction with psychotherapy proves to be effective for many people.
Are there specific medications for substance and drug use?
There are medications approved to treat substance use disorder—such as buprenorphine, methadone, naltrexone, and acamprosate. These medications do help people cope with substance use as well as avoid the problem of relapse. Naltrexone can help reduce cravings, methadone is an opioid medication used to treat severe pain, and acamprosate may help ease symptoms like poor sleep and anxious feelings.
