If you are having PTSD, traumatic stress or anxiety issues or if you are having problems with athletic or artistic perfor mance, you may want to engage in treatment using the power therapies. Most cllients are able to reduce their symptoms to a manageable level or eliminate them entirely. The power therapies are rapid, short-term and work with most people.

Many clients remark about how good the "energy" feels here.
Sometimes you need a good listener who won't judge you, who will really listen to understand, and not rush in to fix things. When you're going through a rough time, you need to be treated with care, respect and kindness. I tell new clients: "I am here to listen and understand, and when your ready to explore solutions just let me know." There have been many new, positive and effective innovations in the field of therapy. See reviews by real clients at https://www.healthgrades.com/providers/walter-botkin-2rsmb Check out my website at wbotkin.com.

Approval seeking, bad relationships and addictions keep us from living out our true potential, but they're not the real problem. Many practitioners provide a long list of conditions, diagnoses and symptoms they treat. Frankly, I'm not all that interested in symptoms: I want to help you figure out why you've been using the same strategies for years and expecting different results. If you want to stop waking up every morning and hoping that somehow - today - your life is somehow going to be different, you've got to DO something different.

I’m a Licensed Mental Health Counselor with many years in private practice helping people with all sorts of problems in life. Because I’m older, I’ve had many of the problems that are common to us all and dealt with them successfully, including life transitions, relationship problems, weight control, career difficulties, financial challenges, weight control, and mood and emotional problems. Because I discovered an effective weight loss method, losing over 100 pounds per manently after 25 years of dieting failure, weight control has become a speciality.

For over 35 years, I have helped many people to deal with general life issues and more specific trauma as well. I use a variety of techniques after assessing the client needs and work together with them to form and implement a good plan. Some people want dramatic change while others just want somebody to listen and I let the client lead me to where they want to go. I have experience with individuals, couples, and families. The majority of my practice involves helping people to cope with anxiety and depression and to improve their communication skills. I really enjoy helping people and firmly believe in the therapeutic process.

Visiting with a therapist takes a lot of courage. It is a step toward making changes in your life. During your initial visit I will obtain a personal history and the reason for your visit. My goal is to provide a safe and supportive environment where we can develop a plan to identify your strengths and work together to resolve your presenting issue. My therapy style is often a combination of interactional, cognitive behavioral, motivational and mindfulness therapy. Many clients find my experience with the NYC Fire Department and social worker training to be beneficial for them.

I can’t say why you’re here since I don’t know you yet. You might be experiencing stuff on the inside: worry, anxiety, buckets of stress, feeling low, numb, angry, lost, or struggling to slow down and smell the waffle cones. It could be more about things on the outside: difficulty with with friends or family, having a hard time in school, burnt out at work, or simply endeavoring to find your feet in an endlessly complicated world. Whatever your circumstance, my role is to create and protect a place where your feelings are real, they matter, and they can change for the better.

My approach to counseling is framed around two perspectives. The first is that each individual knows themselves best. Because of that belief I am available to help individuals achieve the change they seek based on an understanding that each person may just need some guidance to access the knowledge they already have inside of them. The second perspective involves not dwelling on the origins of problems. Knowing the roots of a problem doesn't mean that the effects of a problem suddenly disappear. I often rely on a solutions focused approach rather than a problem centric focus with helping individuals work toward change.

Male Therapists

As a man, why might I want to see a male therapist?

There are many reasons a man might wish to work with a male therapist, including a degree of shared identity, which may help client and therapist connect to each other and allow for a more free-flowing discussion of issues that can be deeply personal. Some men may feel more comfortable talking to a male therapist about relationship concerns, the pressures they feel around the roles society and family place on men, career or job challenges, self-esteem, or anger problems. For some men who have not had a male role models in their lives, a good male therapist may be especially helpful.

How can I find out about a therapist’s experience treating men?

Individuals looking for treatment should feel comfortable directly asking a therapist about their history treating men overall and the issues that arise in therapy with men. A good therapist will be happy to discuss such matters as well as their educational background, approach to treatment, and how they think they can aid a prospective client. Prospective clients should also ask what the expectation is for treatment, and what the fee structure is, and whether and which insurance plans are accepted.

Can clients benefit from having a therapist of the same gender?

Therapy is not gender-specific, but some men as well as women feel more comfortable opening up about their experiences and history with a male therapist. An individual may feel that they have to explain less background information and be on the same page more quickly, particularly when discussing gender-specific challenges, in the case of male clients. Some women have prior negative experiences with women that predispose them to prefer working with a male in therapy. That said, a good clinician can transcend most if not all gender concerns. Ultimately, the most important factor in therapy is the connection and trust the client is able to build with the practitioner.

Would a male therapist have specific training in treating men?

Generally, no. There are no certifications for treating men specifically, but there are continuing education classes that therapists may take that focus on treating men as a group. There are many therapists who focus on men and male issues in their treatment and therefore have experience and expertise in this domain.
