Life can be overwhelming at times. There are often moments of despair and feelings that others simply just don't "get it". Whether you are dealing with grief and loss or navigating situations or relationships that are increasing your anxiety or negatively impacting your self-esteem, I can assist you by helping you first identify strengths and then help you face challenges head-on, at your own pace. In my practice I partner with my clients to reach their goals through open, non-judgmental counseling. Deciding to begin therapy can be a bit scary at times, but you can be proud of yourself for taking the first step!

Hello and welcome. I help clients heal from trauma, adverse childhood experiences and pregnancy/postpartum stress. Trauma can look like unresolved event-based trauma (shock trauma) as well as attachment and relational wounding (developmental trauma) that manifest in various forms of emotional distress. The resolution of unresolved wounding is important in the healing process because such wounds keep us disconnected from ourselves and repeating the same unhealthy patterns in relationships, family systems and professional roles. I am also a Qualified Supervisor for MHC Registered Interns.

Compulsive behaviors impact all aspects of one’s life, including thoughts, feelings, and actions. They can lead to various addictions that include substance use, sex, social media, relationships, gambling, and more. People with compulsive behaviors often struggle to align their actions with personal goals and what is important to them. But I built my practice upon the idea that anyone can recover if given the right environment, and I aim to provide a safe space where clients gain insight and tools for their emotions, experiences, and behaviors.

I am a trained ART Therapist. Accelerated Resolution Therapy is a form of psychotherapy with roots in existing evidence-based therapies. Which has shown to achieve benefits much more rapidly usually within few sessions? Clients with depression, anxiety, panic attacks, (PTSD) substance abuse, sexual abuse and many other physical conditions. My ideal client is one who is striving to make a change. In order for this to occur, there must be cooperation and mutual respect between all parties. I will also work with those who are unable to express their feelings & thoughts and who have built these up due to the stigma regarding mental health.

Traumatic experiences reshape how we view ourselves and the world. They distort our sense of self and alter our interactions with others. Unresolved trauma and the impact it leaves can feel insurmountable to overcome. However, there is something very important to bear in mind — just as trauma is able to shape us, so too does healing. As a trauma therapist my greatest joy is helping clients come home to themselves. My approach is founded upon respect and consideration for all beings. I do not discriminate for any reason and celebrate every individual in Our Human Family.

Sometimes after a traumatic event or significant life change, we are left feeling powerless, uncertain of who we are or our role in life, and hopeless about how we can move forward. Maybe we have low self-esteem or even have thought about harm or death. At Empowered Living Counseling, I often see clients who have experienced trauma, are searching for their identity, and are working to take back control of their lives. I take a collaborative and non-judgmental approach to support clients in finding meaning and empowerment, safety and healing from their traumatic experiences, and figuring out who they are and what they want in life.

I take a feminist approach to therapy with careful consideration of how your upbringing and environment have shaped the issues you face today.
I am accepting new clients! Are you a young woman that struggles with relationships and standing up for yourself? Do you feel like your emotions have you in a chokehold? Maybe life has felt like an unending wave of stress and you long to come up for air. You long to feel comfortable in your skin, but it's so hard. Therapy with me will be a place to slow down, take a moment, and share your story with someone who cares. I strive to understand the context of your struggles first, so that we can unravel the deeper meaning of what’s been going on. I can help you untangle what it is that YOU want and stand up to the outside pressures.

Feminist Therapists

How does feminist therapy work?

Feminist therapy sessions are not only personal but often cultural or political in nature, as the approach is based on the belief that people are affected by, and often struggle with, cultural and societal norms and biases, and need to move beyond those external pressures or stressors to tap their own confidence and engage more fully in their own identity. Sessions may therefore include discussions of sexism, diversity, and gender issues and talk of steps toward greater empowerment for patients who believe they have been silenced and seek to raise their voices.

What are examples of feminist therapy techniques?

Along with traditional talk therapy and analysis, a feminist therapist may employ techniques such as role-playing and assertiveness training to help clients build their self-esteem so that they feel they can act freely, and not based on cultural expectations or gender roles dictated by others. A feminist therapist may also engage in bibliotherapy, offering suggested readings on gender identity or social power inequities as they work toward viewing mental-health concerns through a broad cultural lens before focusing on how they affect the individual. Somatic therapy techniques, with an emphasis on body awareness, self-compassion, and mindfulness practices are also often part of feminist therapist practice.

How long does feminist therapy last?

As with most forms of talk therapy, there is no set duration or end point for feminist therapy; people who believe that they are making progress typically continue until they feel they’ve addressed the issues that had been holding them back. It may take some time to become comfortable discussing personal issues, but once a client feels they can do so, they could expect therapy to last for a number of months, typically including at least 12 sessions.

Does feminist therapy work?

As a relatively recent therapeutic technique, there is not yet a body of evidence proving the efficacy of feminist therapy. However, the approach is based on proven core principles of talk therapy, with a particular emphasis on developing a therapeutic relationship based on equality and authentic connection between therapist and client and discovering and building on clients’ personal strengths to help them gain a greater sense of personal power and agency.
