Are you existing, doing your best to survive? Maybe it is difficult for you to enjoy life and trust yourself? Indecision can be crippling, keeping you from living the life you want. You want to be able to live without self-doubt: to trust yourself and ask for what you want or need. During therapy you will be empowered to say what can be frightening, uncomfortable, or stigmatizing in safety. Through our time together you can learn to navigate parts of your life that you cannot change, work through what has you stuck, and make changes to parts of your life that are not helpful.

Neuropsychological evaluation provided for pre-k through college students to diagnose the specific reasons for learning, behavioral, social, or anxiety issues. Diagnoses often include ADHD, Autism Spectrum Disorder, Specific Learning Disorders, and more. Patients present with problems from concussion and traumatic brain injury, perinatal drug exposure, seizure disorder, other medical issues, or unknown cause. Sometimes children seem to be not reaching their academic potential for an unknown reason. At times, when workload increases such as in college or rigorous high school classes, difficulties emerge that were not evident before.

The ideal client wants to embrace their potential to change. I want my clients to know someone cares about their struggles. My intent is to empower my clients to achieve their goals as they realize that the only thing a person can change in any given situation is themself. Ralph Waldo Emerson said it concisely, “The only person you are destined to become is the person you decide to be.” We are all a work-in-progress, constantly deciding the person we want to be. We will work together using a collaborative, person-centered approach in exploring existing and new skills towards positive change.

Life transitions or events can leave you feeling anxious, depressed, and/or unsure of your direction. Trauma can easily interfere with your decision making. Whether past trauma, a current transition, or a disturbing life event has left you unable to cope, you don't have to go it alone. You do have the strength to overcome the obstacles, and asking for help is not a weakness. I work with young, middle-age, and older adults experiencing transitional and relational difficulties as well as trauma related issues. I'll take a person centered approach to help you define your direction, set your goals, and develop a plan to achieve them.

Female Therapists

Does it matter what gender my therapist is?

In general, this is not an important factor, as there is no relationship between a therapist’s gender and their efficacy. Some clients, however, prefer to see therapists of a particular gender, whether due to their own past experiences with men and women, or ingrained beliefs about how people of different genders think and behave. Exploring the roots of such preferences and considering what one wants to address in therapy can help someone determine whether their therapist’s gender truly matters to them.

Should I see a female therapist?

Many people—not just women—prefer to see a female therapist, either because they believe that a woman will be able to relate to their specific challenges (for example, sexism in the workplace) or because they imagine feeling more comfortable disclosing sensitive information to a woman. Such beliefs may not turn out to be accurate, however, and adhering too rigidly to a gender preference can at times hinder a client from finding the best therapeutic match.

Do therapists get specific training to help with women’s concerns?

Therapists are trained to provide care to clients of any gender. However, some therapists—both men and women—may pursue additional training in feminist therapy, gender-specific issues, or women’s mental health. Female clients may wish to ask prospective therapists whether they have received specific training in the client’s primary area(s) of concern, or whether they have worked extensively with women on issues similar to their own.

How can I inquire about a therapist’s experience in treating women?

It’s OK—even encouraged!—to ask a therapist directly whether and how often they have treated women in the past, or whether they have treated women dealing with the client’s most prominent concern(s). Competent therapists will be happy to share their educational background, preferred treatment modalities, and prior client experience to help an individual find the therapist best suited to their needs.
