I help my clients to discover (or rediscover), create, and heal themselves in meaningful ways. We’ll laugh. You’ll probably cry, but you’ll feel better. My clients are often creative - or striving to include creativity into their lives. I'm often working to help folks undo unhelpful internal dialogues and feel content with themselves. I work with couples in new, or long-term, relationships who are trying to build a solid foundation of quality communication, mutual respect, curiosity, and passion.

Are you struggling with feelings of emptiness, sadness or low self-worth? Do you often feel not good enough or constantly question yourself? Is there a disconnect between who you are and who you hope to be? You are not alone. As we journey through life we encounter many obstacles that life throws our way. These may even be normal transitions of life like going to college, starting a career, marriage, parenting, divorce or grief. Some of these things are out of our control while others may be the choices that we make, but we can learn to adjust and even thrive under any of these circumstances.

I’m the best marriage & family counselor in the world! All right, maybe not THE best, but I’m pretty darned good, and I get great outcomes! I believe in teaching people what’s healthy, and then guide them along the way. I call it Applied Human Growth & Potential™ and here’s why. We have so much research about what healthy and effective people do that it makes absolutely no sense to hang out and spend good money with a referee just trying to solve problems. Learn what is healthy and effective, have support in doing it, and you’re good to go! That’s what I do. I make counseling fun and “simply encouraging.” I help people to relax, breathe and smile with the “serious issues” since it leaves more energy to move beyond them. For premarital counseling, marital enhancement, or for help if you’re on the more challenging side of things, then give me a call. And by the way, I work with individuals too.

When should I seek treatment for ADHD?
You should seek treatment for ADHD if you consistently have difficulty with attention, hyperactivity, or impulsivity that interferes with your daily life. Symptoms of ADHD include the inability to sustain attention during tasks, difficulty organizing tasks and activities, being easily distracted, frequent fidgeting or squirming, and talking or interrupting excessively. If these symptoms interfere with your career, academics, or relationships—for example, consistently failing to complete professional projects on time—you should seek an evaluation for ADHD.
How does treatment for ADHD work?
Effective treatment for ADHD often consists of medication, behavioral therapy, and lifestyle changes. Stimulant medications such as Adderall and Ritalin work by altering levels of neurotransmitters in the brain; higher levels of dopamine and norepinephrine are known to improve attention and focus. Therapy works by helping people with ADHD understand the condition, discuss their areas of difficulty, and develop behavioral strategies to manage their symptoms. In some cases, modifying one’s diet and exercise can also help improve symptoms.
Are there specific medications for ADHD?
Medications to treat ADHD are generally stimulants, the most common are Adderall and Ritalin. There are two categories of stimulants: Amphetamines include Adderall, Dyanavel, Vyvanse, and Dexedrine, and methylphenidates include Ritalin, Concerta, Daytrana, Focalin, Quillichew, Quillivant, and Metadate. Non-stimulants and antidepressants may be used as an alternative if stimulants aren’t effective or viable for a particular patient.
How long does treatment for ADHD take?
It’s tough to give an exact time frame because everyone varies. In terms of medications, stimulants begin to work very soon after you take them, generally within the hour. It may take time to identify the right medication and dosage, but the medication itself is fast-acting. In terms of therapy, it takes time to develop skills and put them into practice, but you will likely see improvements within a few weeks or months.
