I’ve been practicing as a licensed clinical psychologist in Florida for more than 20 years. During this time, I’ve treated many adults, teens and couples who’ve experienced a wide array of clinical issues. I spent several years working in Miami-Dade County Public Schools treating adolescents with emotional and behavioral disabilities and I continue to work closely with schools and parents in order to provide a multidisciplinary approach. I diagnose and treat those struggling with mood disorders, depression, anxiety, and anger, as well as marital and relationship difficulties, women’s issues, processing grief and life transitions.

If you have been experiencing emotional difficulties, therapy can be a highly effective tool. It focuses on helping you process your feelings, enhance or eliminate unhelpful behaviors, learn to problem-solve, and build healthy relationships. Therapy also aids in identifying factors affecting your current emotional state, such as unresolved traumas, underlying depression, anxiety, relationship difficulties, family conflicts including marriage or child-rearing issues, and work stressors. For teens, therapy can enhance parent-child relationships, address peer conflicts, and manage stress related to school, future aspirations, and more.

No one understands what it’s like to feel anxious more than a person who has struggled with anxiety themselves. Sleepless nights, insecurity, inability to take deep breaths, excessive worry, strain on your relationships, the feeling that you are unable to pursue passions or move forward in life... Sometimes, just getting through the day may seem like a nearly impossible task due to the challenges anxiety brings. You may even begin to ask yourself what “normal” feels like because it’s been so long since you’ve felt anything close to that. Does this sound familiar to you?

Life is filled with experiences, each of those moments creating new opportunities for us and also new stressors. It can be hard wading through those moments, especially when we feel alone, lost, forgotten, or unheard. Counseling can be scary, and it is not always easy to share your story and experiences with a stranger.

Marriage Counseling Therapists

How does marriage counseling work?

Marriage counseling works by teaching couples concrete skills to communicate with one another and solve disagreements in healthy ways. A trained mental health professional works with both members of a couple to explore difficulties the couple may be having and helps them develop skills to address these matters. Couples who don’t have any difficulties but want to prepare for marriage may develop skills for the future.

How long does marriage counseling typically last?

Marriage counseling is a short-term form of therapy; the process may last between four and eight sessions. Other forms of relationship guidance from mental health professionals, such as couples therapy, are longer lasting, may focus on the past rather than just the present, and are tailored to the individual couple and their emotions, history, and patterns in the relationship. Couples therapy often lasts for 12 weeks or longer.

Is marriage counseling effective?

Marriage counseling helps many couples develop relationship skills that may not have been acquired or tested in a relationship; partners may be better able to communicate and address conflict following counseling. However, there are many different forms of marriage counseling, and this form of counseling does not have as strong an evidence base as other modalities such as couples therapy.

Is marriage counseling effective if only one partner wants to go?

Yes, marriage counseling can still be effective if one partner convinces the other to engage in the process. Of course, whether counseling is effective depends on the couple’s commitment to work on their relationship; however, the short-term, skills-based nature of marriage counseling makes it a relatively easy “ask” of a partner, and the hesitant individual may see its value once counseling begins.
