21 peer-reviewed randomized clinical trials have shown that DBT reduces problem behavior, increases emotional stability, reduces self-harming, reduces suicidal urges (and hospitalizations), improves functioning and communication in relationships, reduces substance abuse, and reduces binge eating and bulimia among other compulsions.
Effective treatment inspires measurable positive change. My approach to therapy is to provide empirically-based interventions in a warm, collaborative and transparent manner. As Miami's first DBT certified therapist, I work with individuals who have difficulty managing their emotions, relationships and behaviors. I also teach mindfulness and behavior change strategies to promote psychological flexibility and therefore overall well-being. Our practice offers a fully adherent DBT program for adolescents, parents and adults wanting to improve interpersonal skills as well as distress tolerance skills and emotion regulation skills.

Tired of not being in control of your emotions? Tired of not feeling good enough or masking how you feel? Do you have a history of difficult interpersonal relationships, fear of abandonment, chronic feelings of emptiness, or impulsive behavior? If you answered yes to any of these, there is no need to feel ashamed. You have most likely experienced attachment injuries, trauma, invalidation, consistent messages that you are not good enough, not worthy of love or you may have come to blame yourself for most of the bad things that have happened to you or your loved ones. These beliefs are distorted and I am here to help you dissect them.

My life has ultimately always been dedicated to helping those around me, whether they were family, friends, or someone I was walking past. No matter the concern - addictions, anxieties, depressive thoughts, hypomania & mania, grief and loss, family troubles, low self-esteem, suicidal concerns and self-harming behaviors, and the overall overwhelming amounts of chronic stress that can build up on someone before they realize the crushing weight of it bearing down on their entire body. If a compassionate and self-evaluated, accountable holistic focus encourages reaching your goals, reach out today.

If you're here, you're looking for something and probably already know what it is. Maybe you've been worrying for too long and just don't want to feel all that adrenaline and stress anymore. Maybe something happened in the past that left an everlasting impact on you and it's time to let it rest. Or you're neurodivergent and are seeking some guidance about what that means for you. Perhaps you're seeking help for a loved one. You're motivated and ready to make a change, and today is the day you decided to do something about it.

Do you or your teen feel overwhelmed and out of control by your thoughts and intense emotions? Do you feel the sinking feeling of emptiness, hopelessness, or despair? Do you feel like you’ve tried everything but the pain keeps getting worse? Life is difficult when you feel like your thoughts and emotions are out of control. It's terrifying to learn your loved one self-harms or has suicidal thoughts. Life constantly feels uncertain, and you long for stability.

Self-Harming Therapists

How does therapy for self-harm work?

A person may turn to self-injury so that they can distract themselves from their stress, depression, anxiety, or upsetting circumstances. Therapy can address the cause of an individual’s suffering. A therapist can help a person understand why they may want to self-harm and help the person learn new methods of coping. A person may have poor emotion regulation, and treatment such as cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is helpful for breaking this behaviour. In addition, treatment such as dialectical behavior therapy can help a person manage their tolerance of distress.

Which therapies are best for self-harm?

Specific approaches used by professionals include cognitive behavioral, dialectical behavior, psychodynamic, and mentalisation-based therapies, among others. Cognitive behavioral and dialectical behavior therapies are common approaches for people who have painful thoughts and past traumas. These therapies help an individual cope with distress, regulate emotions, and manage impulsive urges.

Does the tendency to self-harm mean the person is suicidal?

Having this urge does not mean the individual suffers from suicidal ideation. People who want to self-injure look to distract or alleviate themselves from the pain they are experiencing. People with suicidal tendencies want to end life altogether. However, this does not mean a person with the intent to self-harm will not attempt suicide.

How often and how long are therapy sessions for self-harm?

As with any type of therapy, sessions depend on the individual. Clients may see improvement within 20 sessions, at an average of 50 minutes per session, while others may opt for 20 to 30 sessions over, maybe, a six-month period. People, especially those with co-occurring conditions like depression and anxiety, may need to continue therapy for up to 12 to 18 months.
