I want you to know that there is light at the end of the tunnel and that light is NOT an oncoming bus (smile). You have a purpose in this life, and you are NOT the sum total of your mistakes. As we walk through your trauma and disappointments, we will get off the detour road and find the road you were destined to walk on.

Making the decision and moving forward with seeking therapy is a huge step and usually, it’s the biggest challenge in therapy. From the moment you step through my door, you’ve already got someone in your corner. I take pride in offering a supportive, calm, accepting, and safe environment for my clients. Today’s environment makes it more difficult for us to find ways to create healthy coping skills. We will work together to identify thought patterns and behaviors, process your emotions, and explore your values and beliefs. We’ll build those healthy coping skills together. It may not always be easy, but it will certainly be worth it.

I focus on two areas - relationships and trauma/PTSD - with couples, individuals, and families. Couples often struggle with a lack of emotional and physical intimacy, they've lost respect & trust for each other, have little companionship, poor communication, argue about finances, sex, children, etc. Trauma/PTSD is often an underlying cause of relationship problems. Many struggle with mental health and substance use as a result. They feel stressed, damaged, alone, numb, can't sleep/concentrate, have racing thoughts, mood swings, anger. They 've tried meds, therapy, substance rehab with little success and feel stuck. Is this you?

Families are the smallest social units, yet familial relationships are critical to mental health from the individual to the global level. As someone who has worked in or studied mental health, I understand how important these relationships are because families are the backbone of society. I am eager to help couples and families work through problems and find healing, regardless of the circumstances.

Your goal may be feeling more balanced or it could be for your child to display improved focus or self esteem. Let us partner together to make pivotal transitions in your life.

An interesting client for me is the middle-aged male who has climbed the ladder of success only to find there is nothing there but "stuff". They are extremely depressed realizing that they are unsatisfied with their lives. So they come into therapy to start "The Male Journey". If they become humble and honest, there is a chance that they can transform their lives for the better. Often, this approach is successful with couples who are in need of relationship counseling.

Self-Harming Therapists
How does therapy for self-harm work?
A person may turn to self-injury so that they can distract themselves from their stress, depression, anxiety, or upsetting circumstances. Therapy can address the cause of an individual’s suffering. A therapist can help a person understand why they may want to self-harm and help the person learn new methods of coping. A person may have poor emotion regulation, and treatment such as cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is helpful for breaking this behaviour. In addition, treatment such as dialectical behavior therapy can help a person manage their tolerance of distress.
Which therapies are best for self-harm?
Specific approaches used by professionals include cognitive behavioral, dialectical behavior, psychodynamic, and mentalisation-based therapies, among others. Cognitive behavioral and dialectical behavior therapies are common approaches for people who have painful thoughts and past traumas. These therapies help an individual cope with distress, regulate emotions, and manage impulsive urges.
Does the tendency to self-harm mean the person is suicidal?
Having this urge does not mean the individual suffers from suicidal ideation. People who want to self-injure look to distract or alleviate themselves from the pain they are experiencing. People with suicidal tendencies want to end life altogether. However, this does not mean a person with the intent to self-harm will not attempt suicide.
How often and how long are therapy sessions for self-harm?
As with any type of therapy, sessions depend on the individual. Clients may see improvement within 20 sessions, at an average of 50 minutes per session, while others may opt for 20 to 30 sessions over, maybe, a six-month period. People, especially those with co-occurring conditions like depression and anxiety, may need to continue therapy for up to 12 to 18 months.
