Book with me now by clicking on my website! I have always used a more integrative approach in order to fit the needs of my clients. At times therapy can be difficult, and it’s my job to help make the experience of introspection, self-discovery, and healing feel as comfortable as possible. I enjoy spending time getting to know you and the important people or things in your life, how you experience joy, and how you manage your troubles. I take a non-judgmental, holistic view of a person to better understand how different aspects of life interact and may contribute to stress.

My areas of interest include but are not limited to PTSD, Grief, depression, anxiety, chronic pain, bipolar, schizophrenia, personality disorders and mood disorders in general, relationship issues, and women's issues.
Our thoughts, feelings and behaviors create our experiences. As a psychotherapist I believe therapy is a process of creating change. Therapy allows a person to explore and develop skills of awareness and recognition of patterns that needs to be changed or recontructed. In therapy you will explore and develop these skills to effectively cope with psychological, personal and behavioral transitions. I work with each individual on finding the right balance of mind, body and spirit connection that gives the person the ability to better understand and bring clarity related to personal goals and plan for a healed and satisfying future.

I don't do 10-15 minute med checks because I don't believe you can properly prescribe medication if you don't understand what is going on with the patient. History is everything in psychiatry and studies consistently show that therapy plus medication works better than either one alone. I use a biopsychosocial approach and treat the whole patient, and coordinate care with other providers. I also do home visits for homebound patients on Mondays and Fridays. I was profiled in the American Psychiatric Nurses Association national newsletter March 2012 issue.

My specialty involves working with people who find themselves experiencing big, strong emotions that feel out of control or overwhelming. Whether that's a result of being naturally wired as a highly sensitive person, an outgrowth of traumatic experiences, or often a combination of both, people who live life this way often struggle with managing their thoughts, behavior, and relationships. You might also become fearful of feelings and find yourself avoiding and pushing them away. I want to support you in understanding and validating those emotions while giving you the skills you'll need to make productive and lasting change.

Like a rollercoaster, life has its ups and downs, twists and turns, and heart-stopping moments. The question is: How do you get back on track? After all, “life is a journey,” and I believe in LIVING it. As a psychotherapist, my primary goal is not only to listen and understand but to, more importantly, guide and empower you. We are all stronger together, and I know that you and I can collaboratively help you become the person you truly want to be.

Chronic Pain Therapists

How does chronic pain therapy work?

Engaging with a psychotherapist to help treat chronic pain does not mean that one’s pain is all in their head. Therapy for chronic-pain patients has been shown to benefit both the mind and the body, targeting physical symptoms and increasing daily functioning. In other words, for many, addressing their emotional health through therapy affects their physical health. A therapist can help a client challenge unhelpful thoughts about pain and develop new ways to respond to it, such as distraction or calming breathing techniques. Studies have found that therapy can be as effective as surgery for certain cases of chronic pain and many doctors recommend trying psychotherapy in advance of considering invasive surgery.

What are the most effective treatment options for chronic pain?

Stress, anxiety, depression, catastrophizing, ruminating, lack of activity, and social withdrawal all make chronic pain worse. Addressing these issues, research shows, can help people gain control over their pain symptoms. Therapeutic approaches such as cognitive behavioral therapy, biofeedback, and mindfulness-based stress reduction, along with greater pain-management education, have been found to help people reduce fear and disability.

Are there new treatments for chronic pain?

Many cases of chronic pain, particularly those involving back pain, remain medically unexplained. But there is evidence that changes in the brain or nervous system are caused by previous physical ailments such as tissue damage; in such cases, the brain may continue to send out pain signals despite the physical cause having healed. To aid patients under these circumstances, a recently developed treatment known as pain reprocessing therapy (PRT) is designed to help the brain “unlearn” this response. A PRT practitioner helps individuals to reduce the “threat value” of their ongoing pain signals until they can reappraise them as less threatening and fear-inducing. They also help an individual to develop new emotional regulation skills.

How long does therapy for chronic pain take?

There is no set timeline for recovery from chronic pain, especially as there may be a range of physical and psychological causes for any individual’s discomfort, but most patients should expect to see a therapist for a number of weeks or months, typically spanning at least 12 sessions. Studies of pain reprocessing therapy found that many individuals’ experience of pain lessened in eight sessions over four weeks.
