Dark thunderstorms are hard to see out of. Especially, when you feel you are alone or worse is feeling lost. When finding your way back to you, adversity does not have to be limiting; it is a resource. Being ready for something different or for things to change is very scary. Except look at all the pain you have already been through. That alone has prepared you for what is next. It is humble to ask for help and although this can feel uneasy just know that you are stretching yourself and that is what gets you results. This work to me is sacred, and if ready then I am grateful to be HEAR for you.

I address a broad spectrum of concerns, ranging from anxiety and depression to ADHD and autism spectrum disorders.
Is your child or teenager having a tough time at school or at home? Are they struggling academically or showing more intense emotions, indifference, or disruptive behavior? As a mother of three young boys, I understand how challenging it is to watch our children struggle. Handling the difficulties that arise by ourselves can be daunting, often leaving us feeling overwhelmed and isolated while trying to provide the support they need. If you are having concerns about your child’s academic progress, behaviors, or mental health, you are not alone in this process.

My main areas of specialization include the diagnosis of Autism Spectrum Disorders, and the diagnosis and treatment of ADHD, OCD, Selective Mutism, and anxiety disorders.
It is my experience that an empathic approach that is strength-based and grounded in science provides the most optimal therapeutic outcomes. While the foundations of my therapeutic approach are behavioral and cognitive- behavioral, I view compassion as an integral component to the way in which I practice. I believe that growth and change are fostered in environments in which individuals are seen and heard and differences are honored. It is therefore my primary mission to provide a safe and supportive environment for each individual and family member that I work with.

Are you an individual with depression, anxiety, and/or autism looking for support? Or, are you a couple experiencing challenges in your relationship and needing guidance from a Gottman trained practitioner? Do you seek a body-informed approach to your therapy sessions with mindfulness and grounding techniques at the forefront of your care? Michael can help.
I remember going through the motions of living life how I thought others wanted me to live. I was always putting others first and myself second, and although I gained joy from some of these experiences, knowing that I was not true to myself and who I wanted to be made me feel lazy and unfulfilled. While I was working on my Masters, the teachings of martial arts and eastern philosophy coincided with my academic lessons in a way that gave me perspective on how I could better myself, my mood, and the lives of others. I have felt a great improvement on my outlook and my ability to assist others in battling their own crossroads.

Autism Therapists

What is the most effective treatment for autism?

Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) has come to be considered the standard treatment for children with autism spectrum disorder, and research has confirmed its effectiveness for many children. Therapists trained in ABA techniques work with children (and their parents) on developing social skills, communication and learning abilities, and everyday habits of hygiene and grooming. The clinician will tailor their program to the child’s particular need but the overarching goal will be to help them advance as far as possible toward independence based on their level of symptoms and decrease the need for additional special services. Families should seek a mental health professional specifically trained in ABA, and holding special certification in the technique, who has extensive experience not only with the approach but in using it with children with the same level of symptoms as the child who needs care.

How does ABA work?

Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) sessions, which typically focus on positive reinforcement, can be intensive, lasting two or more hours several times a week, and continuing for two years or more. Therapists can also be expected to ask parents to take an active role in reinforcing lessons. Research has found that the technique can lead to major improvements that decrease the need for additional special services.

How does treatment for autism work?

Therapy sessions based on Applied Behavior Analysis will likely be frequent, intensive, and highly structured. After a thorough assessment, a therapist will help a child understand and develop skills in a range of areas, including communication, motor skills, social skills, self-care, play, and academic skills, as well as routines of daily living like hygiene. Typically, the therapist will help a child break down the components of a behavior—often referred to as the antecedent (what prompts an action), the behavior, and the consequence(what immediately follows)—and then reward the child at every step, while also asking parents to reinforce the lessons, and the rewards, throughout the day. This core therapy may be supplemented by occupational or speech therapy, and antidepressants, antipsychotics, and anticonvulsants may be prescribed to address specific severe symptoms.

How long does therapy for autism take?

Some people with autism spectrum disorder may be engaged in some level of therapy for many years, but research shows that treatment will be most effective if it is begun early and delivered intensively. When therapy begins by age 3, children tend to be better able to grasp and adopt the skills needed to manage everyday life, including attending school and establishing social relationships. This type of early-intervention treatment regimen is highly structured, typically involving 20 to 40 hours of one-on-one therapy per week, along with additional hours of engagement managed by parents, for a period of two years or more, although the duration of treatment is dependent on the child’s level of symptoms and pace of progress.
