I am experienced working with depression, anxiety, mood disorders, stress management, and relationship conflict, as well as more specialized issues with substance abuse, eating disorders, and reentry for the formerly incarcerated.
Every person has their own life experience, struggles, fears, dreams, and worldview. Navigating life can be challenging and therapy helps. Whatever you struggle with, I will help you develop a deeper understanding of yourself, more effective ways of coping, and a plan for change that will improve your overall quality of life. If you have felt the desire for change, but for some reason find yourself stuck and disheartened by failed attempts, I will help you to problem solve and heal along the way.

You want more than just coping skills to work through the anxiety, depression, and detachment, you also want a space to heal and grow.
You have always relied on your intuition and have been highly successful in reading the room and other people. While you are naturally adept at understanding others, you struggle to understand yourself better why it's hard to stay present and grounded. You often feel like you are wearing a mask to present a happy version of yourself to the world and find yourself repeating limited behaviors. Other times you feel trapped in cycles of anxiety and depression and feel disconnected and detached from others.

My areas of interests are wide, but I am especially interested in working with individuals struggling with depression/anxiety as well as family issues or life transitions.
I take a person-centered approach to counseling, while utilizing tools from many other types of therapies. I feel it is important to get to the root of an issue by figuring out where it began, process through it to find healing and acceptance, and then use tools and techniques to make specific changes in thoughts and behaviors. I believe setting goals helps to track progress and can be a great motivator. I see counseling as a holistic process and integrate spiritual, physical, & mental aspects into the process, as you feel comfortable.

Having worked in a plethora of fields and having experience in all clinical settings, I have come to realize that the issues where I have been able to be of most help and professionally have the most professional interest in are addiction, dual diagnosis, depression, mood disorder and individual and families coming to grips with severe and persistent mental illness. I opt not to make "all disorders" my specialization and know what my strengths and limitations are.

Years in this field allow me to comfortably address most presenting problems such as depression, anxiety, relationship problems, sleeping and eating disorders, parenting challenges, adolescent issues,PTSD, sexual assault and historical childhood confli.
A positive outcome in therapy depends on the quality of the relationship formed between client and therapist. Client-therapist fit is the single most important predictor of therapeutic success. To complicate matters, therapists are trained and practice various models of psychotherapy according to the paradigm they were schooled.I am trained in the psychoanalytic tradition, a school of psychology steeped in history that has stood the test of time. The psychoanalytic interpretation of the client's life history allows the client to gain valuable insight into previously unconscious conflicts with immediate relief.

Depression Therapists

What is the goal of therapy for depression?

Therapy for depression has several major goals. One is to relieve the mental pain of depression, which distorts feeling and thinking so that sufferers cannot see beyond their current state of mind or envision feeling better. Another is to give people the mental tools to recognize and correct the kinds of distorted thinking that turn a problem into a catastrophe and lead to despair. Therapy also teaches people how to process negative emotions in constructive ways, so they have more control over their own emotional reactivity. And it helps people regain the ability to see themselves positively, the motivation to do things, and the capacity for pleasure.

What happens in therapy for depression?

Perhaps most important, no matter the type of therapy, patients form an alliance with the therapist; that connection is therapeutic in itself, plus it becomes an instrument of change. Patients learn to identify and to challenge their own erroneous beliefs and thoughts that amplify the effects of negative experiences. They learn to identify situations in which they are especially vulnerable. And they learn new patterns of thinking and behaving. They may be given “homework” assignments in which they practice their developing skills. In addition, good therapists regularly monitor patients to assess whether and how much the condition is improving.

What therapy types help with depression?

Several types of short-term therapy have been found effective, each targeting one or more areas of dysfunction. Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) helps clients challenge their negative thoughts and beliefs, learn new behavioral strategies, and curb reactivity to distressing situations. Behavioral activation (BA) is a form of therapy often used in conjunction with CBT; it focuses on engagement in rewarding activity as a pathway to changing negative feelings and disturbed mood. Another widely used approach is interpersonal therapy (IPT), which targets the social difficulties that both give rise to and get exacerbated by depression. Therapists may combine approaches as needed.

Can therapy for depression be done online?

Studies have found that online therapy can be highly effective for treating depression, although it may be more challenging to build a good therapist-patient alliance on screen than in person—at least at first. However, online therapy can offer considerable advantages. Accessibility and convenience are tops among them. Some people actually find it easier to talk about problems online than in person. While online therapy typically limits visibility of facial expression and body gestures that give important nonverbal cues to a patient’s state of mind, it can give therapists a glimpse into a patient’s world and life, providing information that can be highly useful in guiding therapy.

How effective is therapy for depression?

Many studies show that therapy is highly effective provided that patients complete the prescribed course of therapy, commonly 16 to 20 sessions. Over the long term, it is more effective than medication and the effects are more enduring. As a result, psychotherapy has the power not just to relieve current suffering but to prevent future episodes of the disorder. Therapy reverses the dysfunction in neural circuitry that disposes individuals to a negative view of themselves, the world, and their future and they acquire coping techniques, problem-solving skills, and understanding of their own vulnerabilities that are useful over the course of a lifetime.
