I enjoy working with individuals who seek to live happier, healthier lives and recognize that change can only happen by trying something new. Each of us has the power to create better lives for ourselves simply by changing the way we relate to ourselves. Many people never learned as children how to cope with stress and negative emotion. But this is a skill that can be learned in adulthood and that can pave the way for greater happiness throughout our lives. The ultimate goal is to prioritize your well-being and care for yourself by noticing and responding to your thoughts and feelings with compassion and validation.

In my journey as a therapist, I have found that working with individuals, couples, and families who have been impacted by addiction and/or trauma is my true passion. I believe our histories impact our current reality in both positive and negative ways. When we change our perspective of the past to make it less painful and find meaning from the pain, we recreate our narrative and move into a life worth living. I want my clients to believe they too can find that life worth living for themselves as they progress through therapy. Whether addressing trauma, addiction, both, or something more, I seek to help my clients find their purpose.

Congratulations on taking the first steps to finding a counselor that will be a match for you as you work though life's regularly bumpy road. Allow me to give you some highlights to my style and what you can expect in therapy with me. The web is a fantastic way to find a therapist but nothing can compete with the in person meeting, so if you find you like what you read and you live in the Tampa Bay Area be sure to give me a call so we can have a complimentary phone consult.

I provide counseling that is goal-focused, relationship-oriented, and with an introspective edge. I try to create a warm and comfortable environment both inside my office and while addressing personal issues with clients. My approach usually brings a sense of hope and encourages learning of problem-management skills. Anyone can experience hard times, but how we manage these transitions in life is of value. My initial visit typically includes a brief assessment of the presenting concern to better understand the client's stressors, problems, strengths and resources. I try to establish an action plan to guide our future sessions.

We all have profound inner wisdom to heal. My role is to assist clients in identifying their unique strengths while providing support and guidance on that path. In collaboration we uncover the unconscious and conscious thoughts and beliefs that contribute to dis-ease. I offer ketamine assisted psychotherapy (KAP) for individuals, couples and groups both in person and virtually. My close collaboration with prescribing physicians allows me to offer a variety of therapeutic options as well as increase accessibility to KAP for clients interested in this modality.

My intention in therapy is to provide you a safe space where you may gain insight and face challenges with greater ease and confidence. I help individuals who wish to move through shame, grief and loss, low self-esteem, relational conflict, anxiety, depression, or trauma. I see the therapeutic relationship as an active process where change can occur. Through this process, I have watched others build self support, identify unhelpful patterns, and connect more fully in their relationships. I offer you a chance to practice the change you seek in a safe supported space.

There are times in our lives when we find ourselves "stuck" and/or feeling like we are wading through quicksand to move forward. Our situations appear hopeless and sometimes overwhelming. They can be due to difficulties beyond our control, unresolved issues from our past that have resurfaced, or the consequence of wrong choices. We seek alternative methods for looking at ourselves, managing our situations, as well as the outside influences in our lives, but we don't know how to access them. We need someone to help us discover who we have become and how to move forward in a healthy manner mentally, spiritually, and physically.

Do the memories of the past continue to haunt you in your present life? Is your mind and body in a constant state of fight-or-flight, leaving you feeling exhausted or empty? Are you looking to heal on a deeper, cellular level instead of just putting bandaid over symptoms? If so, you have come to a safe space! Having worked at various mental health and addiction centers, I witnessed firsthand just how frustrated and unsatisfied people were with traditional approaches to mental health. This lead me to build my own private practice that weaves holistic and evidence-based approaches to help you heal the root-cause of symptoms.

My approach is to meet you where you are while encouraging you to build and grow into your best self. We are all unique, and no two people are the same. Therefore, my therapy is not a one size fits all. Since we require different approaches, I combine my modalities and theories to provide you the best treatment for your individual needs. Additionally, I often use accelerated resolution therapy (ART) and am trauma certified. I encourage you to be your own advocate while learning to connect your dots along your journey and pave your own path to a healing and serenity.

I am from Brazil where I received a clinical psychologist license in 1998 (Brazilian Psychology Board). I understand the importance of cultural sensitivity in establishing trust and comfort to achieve a successful treatment. Besides fluent English, I speak Spanish and Portuguese. My professional training and education, allows me to combine a psychoanalytical vision with cognitive-behavioral interventions in a sensitive and non judgmental style. I utilize sense of humor to guide clients through insights; I am very dynamic and make use of analogies to help clients visualize their problems in a more concrete and manageable way.

Female Therapists

Does it matter what gender my therapist is?

In general, this is not an important factor, as there is no relationship between a therapist’s gender and their efficacy. Some clients, however, prefer to see therapists of a particular gender, whether due to their own past experiences with men and women, or ingrained beliefs about how people of different genders think and behave. Exploring the roots of such preferences and considering what one wants to address in therapy can help someone determine whether their therapist’s gender truly matters to them.

Should I see a female therapist?

Many people—not just women—prefer to see a female therapist, either because they believe that a woman will be able to relate to their specific challenges (for example, sexism in the workplace) or because they imagine feeling more comfortable disclosing sensitive information to a woman. Such beliefs may not turn out to be accurate, however, and adhering too rigidly to a gender preference can at times hinder a client from finding the best therapeutic match.

Do therapists get specific training to help with women’s concerns?

Therapists are trained to provide care to clients of any gender. However, some therapists—both men and women—may pursue additional training in feminist therapy, gender-specific issues, or women’s mental health. Female clients may wish to ask prospective therapists whether they have received specific training in the client’s primary area(s) of concern, or whether they have worked extensively with women on issues similar to their own.

How can I inquire about a therapist’s experience in treating women?

It’s OK—even encouraged!—to ask a therapist directly whether and how often they have treated women in the past, or whether they have treated women dealing with the client’s most prominent concern(s). Competent therapists will be happy to share their educational background, preferred treatment modalities, and prior client experience to help an individual find the therapist best suited to their needs.
