An interesting client for me is the middle-aged male who has climbed the ladder of success only to find there is nothing there but "stuff". They are extremely depressed realizing that they are unsatisfied with their lives. So they come into therapy to start "The Male Journey". If they become humble and honest, there is a chance that they can transform their lives for the better. Often, this approach is successful with couples who are in need of relationship counseling.

Let me break it down folks, no need to waste time. I'm doing something different that's designed to get you healed and cool with your life, whether that means change or not, fast. It's the fastest way I know, and it's not complicated. You learn the whole thing in the longer first session. Visit ashleypennewill.com/blog, or the Blog Archives at ashleypennewill.com/archives. There's so much there that can help you, and it's free. If you FEEL a yes or even a curiosity, I'd definitely invest in that first session. If it's a fit, there's nothing like it, and your life will never be the same. I'm serious! So cool.

Life is hard and full of change. Sometimes we need help navigating those changes and transitions in life. I get that, because I also experience them. After almost 18 years in law enforcement, I made the transition to becoming a therapist. My ideal clients are adult men who are struggling with Post Traumatic Stress Injuries, Trauma, Depression, Anxiety, Stress, Financial Issues, and Process Addictions. These issues can have a negative impact in marriages so I also work to help couples restore their marriages.

I am currently taking new individuals and couples and this can be your first step to healthy! The ability to create meaningful relationships in our lives is one of the most important skills anyone can possess, yet so often, we find ourselves struggling to connect deeply because of our past or present experiences. It brings me joy every time I see an individual or couple work through those issues to connect, heal, and move forward in a more satisfying relationship.

I believe the most important qualities for a counselor to possess are genuineness & empathy. It is my purpose to create an atmosphere in which the client feels fully accepted exactly where they are. My experience includes working with children, adolescents, and adults seeking support for anxiety, depression, grief, relationship issues, and past trauma. My integrative counseling approach is guided by person centered theory, narrative, therapy, cognitive-behavioral therapy, and solution-focused therapy with the main goal being to provide a safe and nonjudgmental environment.

I focus on two areas - relationships and trauma/PTSD - with couples, individuals, and families. Couples often struggle with a lack of emotional and physical intimacy, they've lost respect & trust for each other, have little companionship, poor communication, argue about finances, sex, children, etc. Trauma/PTSD is often an underlying cause of relationship problems. Many struggle with mental health and substance use as a result. They feel stressed, damaged, alone, numb, can't sleep/concentrate, have racing thoughts, mood swings, anger. They 've tried meds, therapy, substance rehab with little success and feel stuck. Is this you?

As a man, why might I want to see a male therapist?
There are many reasons a man might wish to work with a male therapist, including a degree of shared identity, which may help client and therapist connect to each other and allow for a more free-flowing discussion of issues that can be deeply personal. Some men may feel more comfortable talking to a male therapist about relationship concerns, the pressures they feel around the roles society and family place on men, career or job challenges, self-esteem, or anger problems. For some men who have not had a male role models in their lives, a good male therapist may be especially helpful.
How can I find out about a therapist’s experience treating men?
Individuals looking for treatment should feel comfortable directly asking a therapist about their history treating men overall and the issues that arise in therapy with men. A good therapist will be happy to discuss such matters as well as their educational background, approach to treatment, and how they think they can aid a prospective client. Prospective clients should also ask what the expectation is for treatment, and what the fee structure is, and whether and which insurance plans are accepted.
Can clients benefit from having a therapist of the same gender?
Therapy is not gender-specific, but some men as well as women feel more comfortable opening up about their experiences and history with a male therapist. An individual may feel that they have to explain less background information and be on the same page more quickly, particularly when discussing gender-specific challenges, in the case of male clients. Some women have prior negative experiences with women that predispose them to prefer working with a male in therapy. That said, a good clinician can transcend most if not all gender concerns. Ultimately, the most important factor in therapy is the connection and trust the client is able to build with the practitioner.
Would a male therapist have specific training in treating men?
Generally, no. There are no certifications for treating men specifically, but there are continuing education classes that therapists may take that focus on treating men as a group. There are many therapists who focus on men and male issues in their treatment and therefore have experience and expertise in this domain.
