Thank you for reviewing my profile. I look forward to working with you and assisting you in gaining new skills and processes to improve your emotional health. Interventions may include Cognitive Behavior Therapy, Motivational Interviewing, and Mindfulness Practices. I utilize an eclectic approach based on the whole person such as current concerns, history, personal attributes, and supportive resources.

"...The resolution of psychological conflicts ultimately resides within the client..." My passion is to empower clients with tools to help them uncover solutions. I have 26 years of experience working in the arenas of mental health counseling, psychological evaluation & personal development consulting/coaching. My B.S. undergraduate degree coupled with M.Ed. & Ed.S. graduate degrees bridge the fields of psychology, counseling & education; and provide broad based professional training. Insights & epiphanies are useful, but not enough. More importantly, clients need empowerment, coupled with practical knowledge & the life-long "tools" to help surmount their current as well as future psychological/emotional issues.

Trauma and the effects of trauma can be relentless on one's mind, body and spirit. The effects of trauma can last for years if not addressed and or dealt with. The burden of trauma not only effects the individual, but the trauma can bleed into surrounding areas of one's life and rob one of emotionally and physically healing from one's wounds. If you are struggling with trauma and or the aftermath of someone else's trauma, I am here to help and together we can make short- and long-term goals in order to help you heal from the wounds that have caused you pain both physically, emotionally and spiritually.

Finding a therapist you can identify with, feeling heard & accepted can be a challenging feat. Therapists are not one size fits all. We are people with problems, just like you. I offer you over 20 years of experience in the mental health and substance abuse treatment world. I have an undergraduate degree in psychology (2001) and a graduate degree (2006) in professional counseling. With working 10 of those years in a hospital setting, I also have a decent handle on possible medical issues you might need to be referred for.

Teen Therapists

What does therapy for teenagers look like?

When a therapist works with a teenager, the pair will talk about what the teen is struggling with and explore solutions, which may involve interpersonal skills, coping strategies, medication, or lifestyle changes related to sleep, diet, and exercise. Different therapists employ different modalities, but most involve a combination of conversation and skill building.

How long does therapy for teenagers generally take to work?

There’s variability in teenagers’ experiences and challenges; some may begin to improve from therapy within a few weeks while others may take several months or longer. Teens can discuss their progress with their therapist periodically to assess how they’re improving and any changes to the treatment plan that could potentially accelerate that progress.

How do you encourage a teenager to go to therapy?

It’s helpful to express your concern and love while framing therapy as an opportunity to explore a tool that could help improve their life; just like they practice baseball or dance, now they can practice their emotional skills. Give your teen control over the process where you can—maybe by weighing in on choice of therapist and signaling that therapy involves confidentiality, so a parent need not know all that is discussed in sessions.

How do you prepare teens for therapy?

You can prepare your teenager for therapy by describing what the process will look like and setting expectations for timeline, if requested. You can explain that the first session may begin with an assessment phase, that they can describe their experiences but that the therapist will ask questions too, and that it may take time to feel comfortable opening up. Ask how they’re feeling about the process and answer any questions calmly and supportively.
