It can be difficult to come to a psychologist's office to speak about our lives and people often suffer in silence because they believe their problems are too large, too small, unimportant or that nothing can bring about change. It is important to work through the things that cause us depression, anxiety or discomfort. Therefore, I approach every person as a special individual having unique experiences. While providing a safe, relaxing setting, I look for ways we can work together to change even the most tumultuous circumstances into calm, peaceful situations which lead a client to have enjoyable lives.

My clients describe me as loving and non-judgmental, as having insight that illuminates the hidden corners of one’s heart where pain, difficult emotions and distorted thinking moved in and got stuck.
My ideal client comes as they are, or at the very least, is open to change. My role includes helping a client uncover the desire and motivation to change patterns that may keep them from moving forward. Being open to change may be all we need to take small steps in the right direction. Like a snowball rolling downhill, motivation increases with the momentum of progress.

I am a licensed clinical social worker in Florida, Wisconsin and in Michigan. I have an Associates Degree in Computer Programming and have Master's Degrees in Social Work and in Interdisciplinary Studies. I love to learn and find that translates to learning about people as well. What do people find challenging? What brings them joy? Peace? Excitement? How can I help people recapture these positive states and sustain them?

We seem to be living in very stressful and difficult times, struggling with the COVID pandemic, economic turmoil, rising criminality, and national and global instability. If you are feeling anxious, depressed, worried about the future, dissatisfied with yourself, your relationships, and your work, know that you are not alone. Let me help you view 'each hardship as a pathway to peace' and make the changes you need to make, instead of repeating the past and recreating the same unwelcome reality, over and over. Why is it so difficult to change? The answer is simple but not easy. In order to change, we must let go of our painful past.

Chronic Pain Therapists

How does chronic pain therapy work?

Engaging with a psychotherapist to help treat chronic pain does not mean that one’s pain is all in their head. Therapy for chronic-pain patients has been shown to benefit both the mind and the body, targeting physical symptoms and increasing daily functioning. In other words, for many, addressing their emotional health through therapy affects their physical health. A therapist can help a client challenge unhelpful thoughts about pain and develop new ways to respond to it, such as distraction or calming breathing techniques. Studies have found that therapy can be as effective as surgery for certain cases of chronic pain and many doctors recommend trying psychotherapy in advance of considering invasive surgery.

What are the most effective treatment options for chronic pain?

Stress, anxiety, depression, catastrophizing, ruminating, lack of activity, and social withdrawal all make chronic pain worse. Addressing these issues, research shows, can help people gain control over their pain symptoms. Therapeutic approaches such as cognitive behavioral therapy, biofeedback, and mindfulness-based stress reduction, along with greater pain-management education, have been found to help people reduce fear and disability.

Are there new treatments for chronic pain?

Many cases of chronic pain, particularly those involving back pain, remain medically unexplained. But there is evidence that changes in the brain or nervous system are caused by previous physical ailments such as tissue damage; in such cases, the brain may continue to send out pain signals despite the physical cause having healed. To aid patients under these circumstances, a recently developed treatment known as pain reprocessing therapy (PRT) is designed to help the brain “unlearn” this response. A PRT practitioner helps individuals to reduce the “threat value” of their ongoing pain signals until they can reappraise them as less threatening and fear-inducing. They also help an individual to develop new emotional regulation skills.

How long does therapy for chronic pain take?

There is no set timeline for recovery from chronic pain, especially as there may be a range of physical and psychological causes for any individual’s discomfort, but most patients should expect to see a therapist for a number of weeks or months, typically spanning at least 12 sessions. Studies of pain reprocessing therapy found that many individuals’ experience of pain lessened in eight sessions over four weeks.
