I hope to have the opportunity to work with you, build respect, trust, and positive change. The journey to self-discovery is a collaborative relationship that I approach with genuine interest, acceptance and compassion. I believe that therapy should address the person as a whole including aspects of mental, physical and spiritual well-being. I believe all clients are unique and my therapeutic approach is adaptive to each individual’s situation.

Is the past weighing heavy on you? Or has a recent troubling event changed how you see the world and yourself? Are you struggling with symptoms of anxiety and/or depression and suspect that it all comes from somewhere in your past. Trauma, whether it is Big “T” (a reaction to a deeply disturbing, life-threatening event or situation, such as an act of violence) or Little “t” (events that typically don't involve violence or disaster but do create significant distress) leave lasting effects on us. Multiple events can also stack on this emotional weight. Leading us to develop problematic responses, negative thoughts and/or behaviors.

We have been socialized to believe it is virtuous to put other's needs before our own. This often results in poor self care, feelings of resentment and depression, which paradoxically hinders rather than helps relationships. I encourage people to nurture the relationship they have with themselves. This may involve defining more effective personal boundaries and expectations. Identification of unhealthy coping strategies is accompanied by brainstorming more effective replacement behaviors. I am honored to accompany you on your journey to pursue a more meaningful and joyous life.

If you don't know yourself how are you going to know what is your reflection and what is a projection of yourself? Life is full of mirrors and until you can wholeheartedly love yourself and know yourself, it will be hard to decipher what's your true reflection and what is a projection from others. Although the journey of self-rediscovery can be one of the most empowering ventures to embark on, it can also, at times, be incredibly overwhelming and gut wrenching. Yet, it is in those moments that therapy supports you in nurturing yourself enough to be reborn, be reaffirmed, and to reclaim your sense of self!

You’re driven and ambitious, but sometimes find yourself stuck on the couch, overwhelmed by anxiety, procrastination, and perfectionism. Some days you’re on top of the world, and others, you constantly second-guess yourself. You feel the pressure to keep it together, balancing your job, relationships, and life... and you are tired. You get in your own head and escape through mindless eating, drinking, doom scrolling, and sleepless nights, but deep down, you have big goals. The fog of self-doubt and fear of failure makes it hard to get started, and you’re ready for a change.

Dissociative Disorders (DID) Therapists

How does therapy for dissociative disorders work?

Dissociation may be triggered by stress or other upsetting circumstances, and therapy can address the traumatic events at the core of an individual’s dissociation. Understanding why a person may dissociate can help the therapist and the individual come up with alternative methods of coping. A person with a dissociative disorder may get stuck on negative thinking, for example, and treatment like Cognitive behavioral therapy is a gold standard for breaking such thinking. And dialectical behavior therapy, for example, can help a person manage their anguish through better emotion regulation.

Which therapies are best for dissociative disorders?

Specific approaches used by professionals include cognitive behavioral, dialectical behavior, psychodynamic, schema therapies, among others. Cognitive behavioral and dialectical behavior therapies are two widely used therapies that can help individuals with painful memories and past traumas. These therapies work to integrate an individual's different identities into one person.

Are there specific medications for dissociation?

There are no specific medications prescribed for dissociative disorders. However, psychosis, depression, anxiety, and/or panic often co-occur in dissociative disorders. A psychiatrist may prescribe medications for any accompanying symptom—which may include antipsychotics like aripiprazole, antidepressants like selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, or anti-anxiety drugs like benzodiazepines.

How often and how long are therapy sessions?

Like any type of therapy, sessions depend on the individual. Patients may see improvement within 15 to 20 sessions, at an average of 50 minutes per session, others may opt for 20 to 30 sessions over, perhaps, a six-month period. There are still other patients, especially those who have co-occurring conditions like depression and anxiety, who may need to continue sessions for up to 12 to 18 months.
