I have been trained in EMDR therapy which is a theory based on the belief that our brains have a natural system for processing information and experiences so that we can keep what we need for wisdom, learning, and growth.
Are you experiencing challenges that are interfering with your emotional health and wellbeing? Do you feel your past experiences are affecting your ability to reach your full potential? Do you need a safe space to process your thoughts and feelings and engage in self exploration? I am a licensed psychotherapist who believes the most important catalyst for change is the relationship between therapist and client. My goal is to partner with you to reach your desired goals in a therapeutic environment. We will take the necessary steps together to foster positive change while creating individual strategies for self-empowerment.

I specialize in relationship and marital issues, family issues, women's issues, GLBTQ identity and acceptance issues, trauma/abuse/self-injury recovery, eating and self-esteem issues, grief and loss, and am EMDR certified.
Beginning therapy can be an anxiety provoking decision due to the vulnerable place you find yourself when seeking counseling. I create a safe and trusting space, so my clients feel free to discuss any type of concern. I believe therapy is a collaborative partnership, where great transformation can take place when one is ready. It takes courage to make that first step, but once you do, you will begin to create positive change in your life, feel better about yourself and the one's you love. I have been helping people improve their lives and their relationships for over 25 years. I look forward to beginning this journey with you.

I am EMDR Certified.
Don’t wait until you're in a crisis. Start therapy now! I offer face to face sessions, walk talk therapy and online sessions. Everyone goes through a difficult time, but you can choose how to make your life count. Change is possible but it does require focus and hard work. So yes at times therapy can be difficult because your brain will want to hang on to the old narrative which may cause some anxiety and resistance. Together we will work through this by changing the narrative of your story and learn to break your patterns. So learn to be the Hero of your story.

My ideal client realizes that they are the change that needs to happen in their life. We will work together to develop goals that will create the change that they wish to make. If a client already has goals- awesome! If a client does not have goals, but just sits in a general sense of unease that "something is wrong and I am ready to change," that works too. I am also comfortable and familiar with working with the unique needs of first responders.

In the course of a 35-year career as a therapist, I have worked with adolescents and adults from many backgrounds and coping with many different life issues. Whether I have one or two or three people in the room I find it important to look at whatever is troubling them within a broader context of family and society. This would include such issues as conflict in relationships, grief and loss, dealing with depression and/or anxiety, life transitions and how to live life to the fullest.

I believe that we each have the power within us to heal, change and grow the life we’ve always imagined. But no one does this alone. I value the power of therapeutic relationships to help us overcome fears and obstacles that get in the way; whether from trauma, symptoms of anxiety or depression, or difficult medical, societal or environmental circumstances. I have a Master's Degree in Social Work and completed a Post-Master's Fellowship at the Yale Child Study Center.

EMDR Therapists

Who is EMDR for?

EMDR was initially developed as a treatment for individuals with Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), for whom memories of a deeply distressing experience can be inadvertently triggered by random everyday events. The procedure has since been applied in the treatment of many other conditions. For example, it is used by some therapists to treat anxiety disorders including panic and phobias, depression, dissociative disorders, eating disorders, obsessive-compulsive disorders, and some personality disorders. It is suitable for adolescents and adults.

Why do people need EMDR?

People need EMDR as a way to manage distressing memories that in some way hamper the ability to function in the present. The procedure is believed to target the way memories are stored in the brain. Evidence indicates that past disturbing experiences cause ongoing distress because they were not adequately processed, and when such memories are triggered in the present, they are accompanied by all the emotions, thoughts, and physical sensations as the initial experience.

What problems does EMDR treat?

First and foremost, EMDR is intended as a treatment for PTSD, to defuse distressing memories that intrude on and impair everyday functioning. It is also often used to help those who are subject to panic attacks, phobias, and other forms of anxiety. In addition, EMDR has been used to treat individuals with depression, eating disorders, and personality disorders.

What happens in EMDR therapy?

First the therapist takes an individual’s history, and then the therapist and client decide which distressing experience(s) will be the target(s) of the exercise, delivered via a side-to-side visual stimulus requiring lateral eye movements. The client will be asked to activate thoughts, feelings, and any body sensations related to the troubling experience. The eye movements are said to reduce the emotional charge of the memory, so that the experience can then be safely discussed with the therapist and digested, minimizing its ability to trigger anxiety.
