Hi, I’m Courtnie, and I’m a child therapist here in Miami, with a special talent in speaking the language of children. You can think of me as your very own child translator, a neutral third party that can explain your child’s behavior and help you understand their emotional needs. I want to truly get to know your child, and I’ll make sure that they feel safe and comfortable throughout the process. For both children and families, my therapy sessions are relaxed, collaborative, and effective.

I have experience working with individuals who are experiencing anxiety, depression, separation due to divorce, foster care, with adoption adjustments, forming healthy attachments and relationship, and with grief.
My journey of helping individuals and families began as a child and family social worker. I worked closely with individuals and families to provide support and services to ensure all their needs were met and they had all the services available to help them thrive. I have worked as a trauma specific therapist, helping children who have had traumatic experiences learn to cope and manage their thoughts, feelings, and emotions.

Often clients ask me how therapy helps you to feel better, or make lasting changes in how you handle life’s curve balls. Relief from emotional pain and progress on changes you want to make is because of the unique, safe, nonjudgmental relationship that develops with a skilled therapist. It’s about the fit. You need to feel the therapist “gets” you and understands your world. And the therapist needs to have the knowledge and skills to work on what ails you. While I may not be the perfect therapist for every situation, I strive to understand every client.

If you are experiencing anxiety, depression, mood or relationship issues, please know that I have been working with people like you for 25+ years. While you may come to therapy to address your feelings, I will help you to understand how your ingrained negative thoughts affect those feelings utilizing Cognitive Behavioral techniques (CBT). I often delve deeper utilizing a psychodynamic perspective to uncover why these thoughts exist in order to facilitate a deeper understanding and change in behavior.

I work with career-oriented adults to resolve anxieties and depression, relationship issues, stress and help parents with challenging adolescents and children. Too much responsibility and stress at home, school or workplace often leads to strained relationships, isolation, loss of motivation or debilitating fears. I help people and families affected by anxiety, depression, ADHD, behavior challenges, defiance and anger, divorce or trauma. I've worked with children, teens and young adults with emotional disturbances, behavior problems, substance abuse, self-harm, or personality development issues, and helped couples reconnect.

Emotional pain goes by various labels--anxiety, depression, low self-esteem, unrewarding relationships, addiction, etc--but it has common pathways. Otherwise there would be no treatment for it. No one wants to feel pain. It hurts, by definition. But can you use your emotional pain to motivate yourself to address the the issues that cause it in the first place? Can you learn to reflect, understand, and respond versus react to your pain and flee from it? It takes time, but re-training your thinking and behavior can yield valuable benefits if you're willing to invest in yourself.

It can be hard to get up day after day and fight through the modern world alone. We are living in a fast paced world where interpersonal issues, depression, anxiety, and fears seem to be at the forefront of so many of our lives. It might not seem like it, but having someone for support through it all can make a difference.

Adoption Therapists
Does my adopted child need therapy?
Not every adopted child needs therapy. However, many can benefit from seeing an adoption-informed therapist, especially if they were victims of abuse or neglect, appear withdrawn or disconnected, have behavioral or developmental issues (which may or may not be related to their adoption), are struggling with feelings of grief or loss surrounding their birth parents, or find it difficult to establish an identity, a challenge that often becomes most apparent during adolescence.
When should adoptive parents seek therapy?
Prospective parents can benefit from therapy even before an adoption—for example, to voice worries and fears; to reconcile infertility struggles, if relevant; or simply to prepare themselves for parenthood. After the adoption, parents who are struggling to bond with their child; are unsure how to talk about adoption or related issues, such as race; or whose child is dealing with developmental, behavioral, or psychiatric concerns can address these and other issues with the help of an adoption-competent therapist.
Is family therapy appropriate for adoptive families?
Family therapy can be invaluable for strengthening the bond between adoptive parents and children, helping the latter feel more secure in their place in the family. Family therapy can also help adoptive families navigate complex communication issues—for example, parents who feel uncomfortable discussing race with their child, who in turn feels invalidated by their silence, or a child who has questions about his birth parents but avoids asking them out of fear of hurting his adoptive parents’ feelings.
What therapy is not appropriate for adoption issues?
A discredited therapy known as “attachment therapy” (sometimes called “holding therapy” or “rebirthing therapy”) should not be used to treat adopted and foster children, though it was largely designed for this population. Attachment therapy involves restraining, coercing, and punishing the child in order for them to “release” negative emotions and attach to their new caregivers—techniques that are abusive and dangerous and have even proven fatal in some cases.
