I am interested in helping my clients live their best lives possible, working with them to create a toolkit of coping skills based on their strengths. I believe our lives are shaped by our past experiences, but they don't define the person we are today. Let's clarify what is important to you in your life currently, & how we can work together to move you through what is making you feel emotionally or physically "stuck". Prior to private practice, I worked in the hospital system. I have a strong medical knowledge base, & I specialize in people dealing with chronic health problems and co-occurring mental health issues.

“Slow breathing is like an anchor in the midst of an emotional storm: the anchor won't make the storm go away, but it will hold you steady until it passes." quoted by Russ Harris. This quote is a good reminder to us that in times when we may feel overwhelmed with the stressors of life, to just stop for one moment to slow down the pace of our life and our thoughts. I know taking this first step to obtain additional support in your life may not have been easy, but I am so glad that you did. My goal with working with you is to provide you these small reminders and to empower you to improve what is currently working well in your life.

You feel like there is a huge weight on your chest. The pressure is not making it any easier to work, study, complete everyday tasks, or sleep the 8 hours we are told is so important to function optimally. You find your mind is constantly racing, playing out worst-case scenarios to events that haven’t even happened yet. Anxious thoughts are joined by physical discomfort. You might experience a knot in your stomach, and others may notice your uncontrollable tapping, finger biting, or fidgeting.

You are constantly telling yourself, “Be strong!" You try to ignore your racing thoughts. You seem to start each day more mentally exhausted than the day before, wishing and hoping for something to change. Maybe you lost a loved one or your child, were told you have a chronic illness/disease, realized that your relationship is in shambles, are haunted by childhood experiences, or the pressures of your life/ job have begun to take their toll. You have thought of therapy but rationalize with yourself that “it isn’t so bad” and that you can keep trying to “fix yourself” only to find yourself circling in a self-blaming pattern.

I do really well-reaching clients who have anxiety and depression. I also do well with college-aged clients and young mothers, 20/30-year-old women, and I can empathize with mothers/parents very well, as I am married with a 3-year-old son. My ideal client is motivated to participate in the therapeutic process and has some insight into their problem & what they feel they need to do to solve it. They don't expect me to have all the answers and understand that we will partner together to achieve their goals- but that they are the ones who have to be motivated to create change.

Chronic Illness Therapists

How does therapy for chronic illness work?

Many people living with a chronic illness may feel they cannot speak honestly about their experience out of embarrassment or fear of being a burden, or because those close to them do not understand, for example, that they may “look good” even if they do not feel good. Therapy sessions are an opportunity to speak openly with someone who knows their symptoms are not in their head and who can offer practical, proven suggestions for managing feelings of grief, shame, or fatigue, such as techniques to challenge unhelpful thoughts about symptoms and develop new ways to respond to them, such as distraction or calming breathing practices.

Can therapy help with physical symptoms of chronic illness?

Yes, especially if an individual with chronic illness has developed depression. People with depression are less likely to maintain their health treatment regimens or to take positive steps to manage physical symptoms when they arise, thereby potentially complicating their medical prognosis. Treatment of depression, through talk therapy, medication, or both, will often improve one’s physical state as it eases the emotional burden of illness.

What are the most effective treatment options for chronic illness?

No one living with a chronic illness, or their loved ones, should see depression as an unavoidable result of their condition. Instead, they should actively seek treatment. Research shows that people with depression are less likely to devote the required time and effort to maintaining or monitoring their health, and so therapy to limit the risk of depression can be vital for physical health as well. Therapeutic approaches such as cognitive behavioral therapy and mindfulness-based stress reduction have been found to help individuals reduce stress and anxiety.

How long does therapy for chronic illness take?

There is no set timeline for therapy for people living with chronic illnesses, but many will see a therapist for a number of weeks or months, typically spanning at least 12 weekly sessions. Some people feel that they experience progress faster than others but even some who quickly feel improvement may continue with sessions for months or years. Some people may benefit from maintenance therapy if their symptoms change or they experience a decline in physical health. Others find that the skills learned in short-term therapy can be used on an ongoing basis, even after therapy has concluded.
