As a person centered Psychotherapist trained in TF-CBT, DBT, emotion focused, and narrative therapy, I use these strategies alongside other modalities that include music, mindfulness, and solution focused therapy to work with adolescents, young adults, women, and couples who have experienced any level of trauma or disruption.
I love working with anyone ready to figure out how to live his or her best version of themselves whether it is finding freedom from trauma, depression, anxiety, transition or other psychological disorders. I have extensive experience leading a wide range of groups for adults and adolescents. I lead Parent Coaching groups utilizing Gottman’s Emotion Coaching Parenting, and DBT adolescent and adult groups for individuals and families suffering from BPD, Bipolar and other co-occurring and personality diagnosis. I've also lead groups and seminars regarding addiction recovery, self-discovery and team dynamics using the Enneagram.

Hello, I’m Davia, and I’m of Jamaican descent. Seeking mental health counseling is normalizing because mental health professionals continue to speak about, advocate for, and accept its presence in our clients’ lives. You are not alone if you seek mental health counseling. You are courageous and aware that getting help is a sign of indomitable strength. Are you lacking boundaries or wondering why life seems topsy-turvy? Do you function in survival mode but struggle with exhaustion or burnout?

I offer in person and virtual sessions to help children, teens, parents, and adults navigate and process life's challenges.
I love the saying- "being human is not hard because you're doing it wrong it's hard because you're doing it right." I believe this deeply and that the relationship is central to healing. Growing, processing, feeling, and adapting are part of being alive and I'd love to partner with you or your child to support coping with life's challenges.

Life is a complex gift, it was given to us with no true guidance or direction. We go through our phases and hope for the best outcomes, often we hit a wall and become trapped trying to find our way out. In protecting oneself from the unknown, we unconsciously close and lock the door to keep ourselves safe from what lurks behind it. These are the moments that become the hardest for us to reach out and ask for the help we need.

My clinical training and experiences thus far provide me with the unique capability to support a variety of people and populations; these include behavioral and emotional issues in children/pre teens, parents, adults struggling with anxiety, unhealthy thinking patterns, relationship stressors, and communication barriers within relationships.
The world we live in is overwhelmingly unpredictable, which can lead us to not only numb our own emotions, but also hinders our capacity to communicate in healthier ways, build meaningful relationships, connect, be intentionally productive, or engage in much needed acts of self-care. Feeling the weight of one or more past traumatic or stressful experiences can easily cripple our ability to shift away from destructive behavior patterns. You may be feeling stuck– uncertain of who you are, what you want, and what you deserve, or maybe you’re caught in the spiral of believing that you don’t deserve more than what you have now.

I specialize in working with people who are struggling with healing from traumatic/abusive experiences, those who have a poor/disconnected relationship with themselves, and people who are having a hard time managing or decreasing anxiety. I am especially passionate about guiding people through family-of-origin trauma, perfectionism, and self-criticism. I teach my clients how to look inward for approval and validation, versus externally from others. My goal is to guide my clients to their own inner power, learn to heal themselves, and find liberation from a life lead by fear. I take a bottom-up approach, with a focus on embodiment.

Teen Therapists

What does therapy for teenagers look like?

When a therapist works with a teenager, the pair will talk about what the teen is struggling with and explore solutions, which may involve interpersonal skills, coping strategies, medication, or lifestyle changes related to sleep, diet, and exercise. Different therapists employ different modalities, but most involve a combination of conversation and skill building.

How long does therapy for teenagers generally take to work?

There’s variability in teenagers’ experiences and challenges; some may begin to improve from therapy within a few weeks while others may take several months or longer. Teens can discuss their progress with their therapist periodically to assess how they’re improving and any changes to the treatment plan that could potentially accelerate that progress.

How do you encourage a teenager to go to therapy?

It’s helpful to express your concern and love while framing therapy as an opportunity to explore a tool that could help improve their life; just like they practice baseball or dance, now they can practice their emotional skills. Give your teen control over the process where you can—maybe by weighing in on choice of therapist and signaling that therapy involves confidentiality, so a parent need not know all that is discussed in sessions.

How do you prepare teens for therapy?

You can prepare your teenager for therapy by describing what the process will look like and setting expectations for timeline, if requested. You can explain that the first session may begin with an assessment phase, that they can describe their experiences but that the therapist will ask questions too, and that it may take time to feel comfortable opening up. Ask how they’re feeling about the process and answer any questions calmly and supportively.
