The purpose of therapy is to take what you have learned and apply it outside. It is not always easy to make changes, and change can be scary, but once you put your words into action, the change can be beautiful. I have worked with people who struggle with substance use issues, depression, anxiety, and families. I have a passion for working with people in the BiPOC community. I want my clients to believe in themselves and what they can accomplish without needing external validation. My goal is for you to feel confident in your decision-making to process your needs/issues without relying on others.

During my career I have worked with hundreds of clients to address a diversity of issues ranging from diagnosed substance use and mental health disorders to the day-to-day problems that affect us all such as self-care, relationships, spirituality, sexuality, etc.
Hi there, I’m Sage, and yes it’s my real name! Many clients start therapy because they are seeking change, struggling with areas in their lives such as relationships and work, or simply need support and a space to be heard. My main focus is about helping you explore the relationship between acceptance and change in your own life or relationship within the safe context of therapy. We will work together to address your needs and reach your goals, but also talk about the bigger picture, or just vent if that’s what you need that day. I like to think of therapy as a choose-your-own-adventure experience that is driven by the client.

I embrace a collaborative approach when working with clients who are combating mental health issues, substance use disorders, trauma, relational conflict, depression, grief, anxiety, and life transitional concerns.
We tell stories. We tell stories about who we are, what we do and where we are going. The stories we tell ourselves are defining. Utilizing a systemic perspective to provide an empathetic, non-judgmental, and active approach to therapy, you can redefine the narrative. As a clinician, I help each client expand on their self-awareness and draw on their strengths to promote healing, positive change and empowerment. I believe in assisting each client author their preferred life story that embodies well-being while creating opportunities of self-expression via an integrative approach to therapy.

When you’re experiencing one of these concerns, or you recognize that substance use has become an issue for you or someone in your family, therapy can illuminate a new path forward.
Life is a constant flow of change. The end of one chapter and the beginning of another. With change comes the need to adjust and adapt, but also the need to grieve, to refocus, and to summon courage for what lies ahead. Whether you are struggling to meet the expectations of a new role, coping with the loss of an identity or crutch, or wondering how to navigate a new adventure in life—it makes sense that you may need some support along the way. In your search, the question that you really want answered is, “Will it get better?” I believe it will. In our sessions, I help adults and teens discover how to move through seasons of change.

Substance Use Therapists

How do substance and drug recovery or rehabilitation programs work?

In inpatient programs, individuals live in a facility with other clients in recovery; in outpatient programs, individuals reside at home. These facilities are staffed with healthcare professionals including physicians, nurses, psychologists, counselors, and psychotherapists. Staff often also includes people who have recovered themselves, serving as mentors and guides. These programs may use abstinence, harm reduction, detoxification, psychotherapy, and other methods.

How do 12-step programs combined with psychotherapy work?

Members of 12-step programs help each other reach abstinence and work to maintain it. These programs promote complete change in the individual’s emotional, mental, physical, and even spiritual perspectives. Some programs require that new members attend 90 meetings in 90 days. Many people do attend these programs in conjunction with their work in psychotherapy; the combination of therapy along with 12-step can be extremely effective.

How does harm reduction combined with psychotherapy work?

According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, harm reduction prevents death, injury, disease, overdose, and substance misuse. People who choose harm reduction for substance use reduce the amount of drugs they consume. It is not abstinence-based like a 12-step program, but combining harm reduction with psychotherapy proves to be effective for many people.

Are there specific medications for substance and drug use?

There are medications approved to treat substance use disorder—such as buprenorphine, methadone, naltrexone, and acamprosate. These medications do help people cope with substance use as well as avoid the problem of relapse. Naltrexone can help reduce cravings, methadone is an opioid medication used to treat severe pain, and acamprosate may help ease symptoms like poor sleep and anxious feelings.
