There is not one approach that works for everyone! I offer Psychodynamic Therapy, CBT, Hypnotherapy, Trauma based, Solution Focused, Mindfulness, Life coaching and Couple's Therapy to name a few.
If you are seeking therapy for the very first time you may be wary, not know what to look for in a therapist or how therapy works and what to expect from it. I can reassure and educate you about the process and our relationship. If you previously have been in therapy and are experiencing a re-occurring issue, a new development in your life or may be in crisis, you may also worry about connecting with your new therapist and having to start anew. I can offer a supportive, encouraging and exploratory process to help either of you feel comfortable enough to work on yourself and achieve your goals.

It has been my experience that combining insight ( psychodynamic) and goal oriented (CBT) methods in an integrative approach offers the most effective, individualized, and flexible treatment.
My style is warm, interactive, respectful, practical, and collaborative, and I have experience working with clients of all ages and backgrounds. I believe that establishing a safe and trusting therapeutic environment is the foundation on which to increase self-understanding and insight, and that this is essential to promoting growth and achieving therapeutic goals. My years of experience have strengthened my sense of optimism and belief that you can feel better, and that change and growth are possible.

I frequently utilize Psychodynamic Therapy to help clients gain self-awareness and understanding of how their past impacts present behavior as well as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, to help clients recognize patterns of thinking and behavior that cause problems and to develop more helpful habits.
My name is Alexa (Lex) Buford and I am a licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) based out of Palm Harbor, Florida and working with clients statewide via Telehealth. I work with adolescents, teenagers, and adults and specialize in anxiety, depression, relationship issues, stress, and eating disorders. My approach to therapy is supportive and collaborative. I have found that my style and approach is a good fit for teens and adults navigating difficult life transitions, stressors of daily life, social pressures, relationship issues, as well as eating disorders. Many of my clients have depression and anxiety.

I am trained in DBT and CBT but primarily use attachment and psychodynamic approaches.
I have experience working with individuals who struggle with addiction, mood disorders, trauma, relational issues, and personality disorders. The clients I typically work with suffer from underlying issues that manifest as self-sabotage, depression and anxiety, conflict with friends and family, toxic relationships, and compulsive behaviors. I believe that healing happens in safe relationships and enjoy working to develop that with my clients.

Integrated Therapy is an approach to healing and growth that views the individual as an integrated whole...mind, body, and spirit. My journey into the counseling world and my desire to help others centers around this concept. This process centers upon viewing the individual holistically; mind, body, and spirit and is enacted by not only using traditional talk therapy, which focuses on our life story and patterns of behavior, but by looking at the system in its entirety. Together, we will look to see where this system can be improved upon in order to navigate a solution to your problems.

It's about making the choice, to take the chance, if you want anything in life to change. I think with the right support, infused with hope, optimism along w/ an edge of realism, I can help people envision the “big” picture. I promote a therapeutic style that embraces the human condition to empower individuals to achieve their ideal self. You can expect to overcome mental health or relational issues that may feel or have felt “incurable." I encourage individuals to explore not only their symptoms/issues but also the underlying emotional/behavioral/spiritual components, where growth is not only possible but sustainable.

I have spent years working with individuals and helping them through addiction, trauma, anxiety and relationship troubles. Often co-occurring disorders such as codependency and depression live just under the surface and make it hard to sustain a life of meaning and purpose. When these issues are addressed, true healing is possible. I love to assist people in discovering their true self by working through their thoughts, feelings and behaviors.

I'M SORRY TO SAY I AM NOT ACCEPTING NEW PATIENTS AT THIS TIME. Though I'm a broad-based counselor and psychotherapist, my primary focus is sex therapy and sexual/relational problems at all stages of life. Areas of expertise include sexual dysfunction (especially P.E., E.D. and orgasm difficulties, desire discrepancies), adolescent issues, paraphilias and out-of-control sexual behavior (a.k.a. "sex addiction," for which I support a "sexological" approach over an "addictionological" one). I also train medical & mental health professionals in sex therapy, as Co-Director of Modern Sex Therapy Institutes.

Psychodynamic Therapists

Is psychodynamic therapy evidence-based?

Studies have found psychodynamic therapy to be effective in treating conditions like social anxiety, eating disorders, chronic pain, some personality disorders, and depression; indeed, some studies have found it to be just as effective as CBT or medication. What’s more, several studies have found that the benefits of psychodynamic therapy tend to endure—even grow—long after treatment has ended.

How long does psychodynamic therapy last?

Unlike CBT and other more structured forms of therapy, psychodynamic therapy tends to be open-ended and may not be limited to a set number of sessions. It is common for clients to be in therapy for a year or longer and to see their therapist one to three times a week, though the exact schedule and timeline may vary depending on a client’s challenges and progress. However, brief psychodynamic therapy is available, which tends to be more goal-oriented and typically unfolds over 16 to 30 sessions.

Does psychodynamic therapy work?

Research finds that psychodynamic therapy can help someone manage or reduce symptoms of diagnosable mental health conditions like depression or anxiety. The modality may also offer a range of benefits that are harder to measure but just as valuable—such as increased self-worth or healthier relationships. While no therapy type will work for everyone, research and anecdotal evidence suggest that psychodynamic therapy can be highly effective.

What are the limitations of psychodynamic therapy?

Some meta-analyses have concluded that there is little evidence to suggest that psychodynamic therapy can effectively treat certain mental health conditions such as PTSD, OCD, or psychosis, though it is sometimes used to do so. More broadly, the open-ended, free-association structure of psychodynamic therapy may be frustrating for clients who prefer a more structured, time-limited, or goal-oriented approach.
