I specialize in anger management, anxiety, depression, career counseling, family conflict, behavior issues, impulsivity, and coping skills.
As an experienced and licensed mental health counselor, the barriers to achieving your strongest desires are often minimized by false narratives you may have unintentionally adopted. We'll establish new tools and therapeutic skills to address challenges head-on. Then we'll craft a tailor-made action plan that empowers you to move in the right direction. You will find that our sessions are judgment-free zones where you can indeed be seen and heard.

I also specialize in working with couples and individuals who have a history of anxiety and depression.
After over thirty years in practice, my most studied specialty is in relationship counseling. Loving feelings can grow when couples make a commitment of just 4 to 6 sessions. I teach enhanced communication skills and a conflict resolution model to help you talk out an issue all the way to a solution. I can help you move past the anger and towards a deeper connection. Some couples disagree over personality traits or gender differences? I increase your understanding of these differences so you can let go of those negative feelings. And I will help you change patterns of behavior that disrupt your present relationship.

You have made the brave decision to show up for therapy, to show up for YOU. I attempt to understand the world from the client's view; to give the most valuable healing gift: being heard. Together, we determine what is missing & what is important (the Why: purpose), how the client wants to find fulfillment (the What: set goals). We determine How we will know they are successful and can continue on their own (measures for termination). I've been a Chaplain. I counseled people living with schizophrenia, bi-polar, or addictions, and prisoners - exhibiting anxiety, depression, grief, identity disorders, impulsivity & trauma response.

I work with children, teenagers, and young adults who are struggling with depression, anxiety, life-stage transitions, relationships, self-esteem, and perfectionism.
I once read that "when we can talk about our feelings, they become less overwhelming, less upsetting, and less scary." Inspired by this, I aim to create a safe and comforting space for those feeling overburdened by their emotions. Together, we can navigate a way forward. I use evidence-based treatment to provide coping skills and help you rediscover the spark within yourself. I utilize a collaborative and tailored approach to meet each client’s unique needs. I am a dedicated therapist who uses evidence-based techniques, empathy, and understanding to help individuals achieve personal growth.

Working together, we can get to the root causes to the feelings of anxiety or depression, take a deeper look at the impact of life transitions, and develop a personalized plan that empowers you to create an environment and life that you dream of.
You may be feeling stressed because of changes happening in your life. At night you replay (multiple times!?!?) all that happened that day, and wonder if you said or did the right thing. This has you feeling exhausted, sad, lonely, or worried, and you realize you have nothing left in your tank. You want to feel better, but you’re unsure where to start. You’ve come to the right place. Together we will pinpoint how past experiences and present day are impacting you reaching your goals. I bring over two decades of experience and will help you clarify issues and assist you in developing a path to greater life satisfaction.

When the pressures of daily life create distress, there is great satisfaction in finding a solution to lower your natural instinct of fear and anxiety. The main focus of my practice is to locate the limiting beliefs from your history, to free you from the contradictions that limit your growth and confuse you in relationships. The most important goal of therapy is to raise awareness regarding your natural inclination to react to negativity. When you are well anchored on the inside you will not emotionally react to an external challenge or threat.

Depression Therapists

What is the goal of therapy for depression?

Therapy for depression has several major goals. One is to relieve the mental pain of depression, which distorts feeling and thinking so that sufferers cannot see beyond their current state of mind or envision feeling better. Another is to give people the mental tools to recognize and correct the kinds of distorted thinking that turn a problem into a catastrophe and lead to despair. Therapy also teaches people how to process negative emotions in constructive ways, so they have more control over their own emotional reactivity. And it helps people regain the ability to see themselves positively, the motivation to do things, and the capacity for pleasure.

What happens in therapy for depression?

Perhaps most important, no matter the type of therapy, patients form an alliance with the therapist; that connection is therapeutic in itself, plus it becomes an instrument of change. Patients learn to identify and to challenge their own erroneous beliefs and thoughts that amplify the effects of negative experiences. They learn to identify situations in which they are especially vulnerable. And they learn new patterns of thinking and behaving. They may be given “homework” assignments in which they practice their developing skills. In addition, good therapists regularly monitor patients to assess whether and how much the condition is improving.

What therapy types help with depression?

Several types of short-term therapy have been found effective, each targeting one or more areas of dysfunction. Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) helps clients challenge their negative thoughts and beliefs, learn new behavioral strategies, and curb reactivity to distressing situations. Behavioral activation (BA) is a form of therapy often used in conjunction with CBT; it focuses on engagement in rewarding activity as a pathway to changing negative feelings and disturbed mood. Another widely used approach is interpersonal therapy (IPT), which targets the social difficulties that both give rise to and get exacerbated by depression. Therapists may combine approaches as needed.

Can therapy for depression be done online?

Studies have found that online therapy can be highly effective for treating depression, although it may be more challenging to build a good therapist-patient alliance on screen than in person—at least at first. However, online therapy can offer considerable advantages. Accessibility and convenience are tops among them. Some people actually find it easier to talk about problems online than in person. While online therapy typically limits visibility of facial expression and body gestures that give important nonverbal cues to a patient’s state of mind, it can give therapists a glimpse into a patient’s world and life, providing information that can be highly useful in guiding therapy.

How effective is therapy for depression?

Many studies show that therapy is highly effective provided that patients complete the prescribed course of therapy, commonly 16 to 20 sessions. Over the long term, it is more effective than medication and the effects are more enduring. As a result, psychotherapy has the power not just to relieve current suffering but to prevent future episodes of the disorder. Therapy reverses the dysfunction in neural circuitry that disposes individuals to a negative view of themselves, the world, and their future and they acquire coping techniques, problem-solving skills, and understanding of their own vulnerabilities that are useful over the course of a lifetime.
