I've been fortune to work with motivated, aware, brave, and honest clients that have inspired me to grow in my therapeutic approach. These attributes don't hide their depression, anxiety or even post traumatic experiences (ie childhood neglect and abuse; sexual abuse, racial or religious abuse, or domestic violence) instead, they use the pain to transverse fear.

Life presents a unique set of challenges for every individual, and sometimes those challenges are more than we can handle on our own. When that imbalance occurs, we can experience a number of uncomfortable emotions such as stress, anxiety, sadness, worry, or even fear. We can feel easily overwhelmed, frustrated, and irritable, and these feelings can have impacts on many aspects of our lives. Acknowledging we need additional support when coping with issues such as these can be difficult, and allowing ourselves to actually reach out to ask for that help can seem like an almost impossible task.

COUPLES, FAMILIES and LGBTQ. I want you to have the interpersonal relationships you deserve and that you have always dreamed of. My approach to counseling is relational in it's focus. By nature humans are relational and interdependent. There is nothing more painful than broken or harmful relationships. While not every relationship can or should be mended, the pain caused can be felt for years to come and exaggerate or cause many forms of mental illness to include anxiety and depression.

Night after night, you and your partner lie in bed together feeling miles apart. The quiet between you feels heavy. Days end without fixing things, making you feel more distant. It's hard to talk like you used to, with hurt and misunderstandings getting in the way. You miss how things were when joy and closeness filled your days. Now, all you have are these endless arguments and cold silences. You're both longing to find that closeness again, to understand and heal together. Despite the tough times, you still hold onto hope for a future where you can reconnect and grow stronger together.

It’s a fact of life that we all struggle in one way or another: feeling stuck or as if life has been turned upside down. Maybe, feeling confused and afraid about the future. Overwhelmed with feelings of shame, loneliness and hopelessness. You wonder: Do I stay or leave this relationship? Where do I go from here? Perhaps, your childhood was lost to sexual abuse and you ponder if it's worth facing the pain. Depression, anxiety, trauma, grief and loss, divorce, relationship issues, infidelity, and life transitions are really holding you back. You want more from life. You want to regain a sense of purpose and peace but it seems elusive.

Domestic Abuse Therapists

What are the most effective ways to recover from domestic abuse?

Leaving an abusive relationship requires tremendous courage, so survivors in treatment should recognize that they have already completed the most important step. Still, the trauma of physical or emotional abuse can be difficult to process and overcome. Therapy can help survivors process trauma, grief, and difficult emotions, treat relevant mental health symptoms, and create a new framework for boundaries and relationships in the future. For some, support groups can also be an invaluable outlet for healing.

When should an individual seek help for domestic abuse?

Victims of intimate partner violence should seek help immediately. It can take substantial time, planning, energy, and courage to leave an abusive relationship, but starting the process—by seeking therapy, calling the domestic violence hotline, or simply confiding in a loved one—will help them get there. Those who have left abusive relationships but haven’t sought treatment can also greatly benefit from therapy to process and heal from the experience.

What are the consequences of staying in an abusive relationship?

Remaining in an abusive relationship has serious repercussions. In addition to the ongoing threat of physical danger and emotional abuse, research shows that intimate partner violence is associated with a range of mental health disorders including depression, post-traumatic stress disorder, anxiety, and substance abuse. Therefore it’s important for individuals in an abusive relationship to seek help as soon as possible.

How can you get domestic abuse treatment for someone else?

It can be very complicated to identify and leave an abusive relationship; barriers include the threat of violence, financial instability, and family pressures. Those concerned about a loved one in an abusive relationship should talk to them about the situation, provide them with resources such as the domestic violence hotline, and introduce the idea of seeing a therapist due to their concern for the person’s safety and well-being.
