I primarily utilize DBT, Narrative, IFS, and CBT lenses, with an overarching Trauma-informed lens.
Often times, we have difficulty healing from our painful pasts which can manifest into our present and our future. I strive to empower clients by helping them rewrite their stories to strip the shame and create meaningful, insightful, and lasting change. As therapist Claudia Naranjo said, "accept being as you are." If you find yourself struggling to accept pieces of yourself or your past, that’s where therapy can come in. My hope is that we can work together to process the past, so that you can have a more peaceful present and a renewed hope for the future.

I use sand tray therapy, play therapy (CCPT and CPRT), relationship counseling (Gottman method), DBT skills, and more.
Welcome! Are you hoping to grow closer to loving yourself authentically? Seeking to learn how to work with your ADHD or Autism instead of against it? Part of a couple or polycule in need of relationship revitalization? I'm here to help! I support individuals, couples, families, and caregivers in navigating daily challenges in their relationships - with others, and themselves. So.. what brings you to counseling, and what are you hoping to achieve on your journey?

I offer therapy primarily through CBT, DBT, ACT, feminist, and Existentialist lenses.
You can book a consultation with me by clicking on my website! It's true that our Comfort Zones are wonderful places that keep us safe, but growth cannot occur there. My ideal client is willing to find the strength within themselves to step outside of their Comfort Zones to create small changes in their lives that add up to big changes in their emotional, mental, and spiritual well-being . My focus with my clients will always be progress over perfection and to build self-love and self-compassion above all. I enjoy taking a direct yet compassionate approach, utilizing humor, education, and the power that already exists within us.

I draw on several treatment modalities (including, but not limited to Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Motivational Interviewing, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, Internal Family Systems Therapy and Dialectical Behavior Therapy) to allow you to develop your strengths and help you meet all of your treatment plan goals at a speed that works best for you.
I have been practicing as a Licensed Mental Health Counselor in Florida for the past 22 years and am also a Licensed Therapist in Virginia, largely with a focus in the areas of depression, anxiety, thought disturbance, addiction, emotion regulation, relationship distress, and self-esteem. I feel many of the responses we struggle with are connected to a traumatic event (or perceived trauma) from the past. Currently, my primary focus has been in the individual/couples/relational therapy realm. I will encourage you to prioritize the areas you wish to address in therapy and then tailor my approach on an individual basis.

My goal is to work with you to create an individualized plan for you to reach your goals using my background in EMDR, dialectical behavioral therapy, play therapy, and positive psychology (the study of happiness and human flourishing). I believe that we all have strengths that are inherent in us. We will work to identify your specific strengths, and build them into your daily practices so you can feel confident in your ability to tackle problems and cope with stressful situations. I like to combine theoretical concepts with real world skills that you can learn and apply to your everyday life.

The stress is overwhelming. Anxiety is at an all time high. Life is unpredictable and you don’t know how to cope with work, the kids, their school, and being quarantined. The desire to run from your house and not return has crossed your mind, but you dig deep and tell yourself today will be better. But it isn’t. The anxiety feels like it is going to explode from your chest. It starts settling into depression and you feel like you are walking in a fog. Unable to make decisions, not able to complete tasks, feeling frustrated and annoyed all the time. You just want life to be back to normal and it feels like there is no end in sight.

Navigating life can feel tough! It can seem as though with every moment life keeps changing. It seems as though you can't catch a break. The loss of a dream, a friendship, the death of a loved one. Wondering how will I ever go on? The feelings of deep sorrow take over and it is hard to comprehend the many changes life keeps bringing. Feelings of despair and being overwhelmed creep in like a theif in the night. It can feel unbearable to continue on. Thoughts start to swarm your mind and you begin to wonder if life will ever get better.

Dialectical Behavior (DBT) Therapists

Who is DBT for?

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is designed for people who experience extreme emotional suffering because they lack the skills of emotion regulation and distress tolerance. The basic affliction can underlie a wide range of conditions, from borderline and other personality disorders to PTSD and treatment-resistant anxiety and depression. The therapy is helpful to those whose emotional reactivity is so intense it is disruptive to everyday functioning and leads to frequent crises.

Why do people need DBT?

The ability to regulate emotions is a core psychological skill that enables people to function in life and pay attention to the world outside themselves; it is consistently associated with well-being. DBT is designed to help people learn how to manage and regulate their emotions. Originally developed to treat people with borderline personality disorder whose extreme emotional suffering led to self-harming behavior and suicide attempts, the therapy is now applied to other conditions involving emotion dysregulation, particularly when other treatments have failed.

What happens in DBT?

Individuals meet weekly with their therapist to discuss their experiences relating to moods, behavior, and skills. Using checklists they maintain, they review emotional experiences and positive practices they engage in. The diaries help individuals discern what led up to a specific problem encountered, this is followed by discussion of the consequences of their actions. In addition, individuals may meet in class-like small groups to learn skills such as mindfulness, emotion regulation and distress tolerance.

How long does DBT last?

Because it is intended to establish long-lasting behavioral change among those with persistent problems, DBT is designed to last six months to a year. DBT includes both weekly sessions of individual therapy and weekly skills-training sessions conducted in small groups. Studies of DBT have documented improvement within a year of treatment, particularly in controlling self-harmful behavior; nevertheless, individuals may require therapy for several years.
