The relationship between a counselor and client is unique. I am a trained therapist who uses modern, evidenced based, therapeutic strategies and techniques and who is also outside of your daily life and social circles. My role is to listen to better understand you, to empathize with you without prejudice and judgment, validate your feelings (because how we feel is how we feel) and to help you develop strategies for overcoming life's obstacles. You cannot offend me in a therapeutic session and you can speak freely and openly about anything you think or feel, being free to express yourself.

I have spent the last 30 years working with individuals and families on a wide range of emotional issues from substance abuse to grief in providing psychotherapeutic support. My background as a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) has made it possible for me to lend emotional know how around Depression, Anxiety, Addiction, Relationships and Life’s Challenges at any stage. I have also spent several years working as an EAP Counselor in navigating workplace issues. I realize that these are stressful times and getting the right kind of help is most important. My approach is simple, it’s walking with you through this difficult time.

Throughout life, we face life changes, identity and personal crises, losses, and possible disconnection with ourselves and with others. When we begin to explore these changes in a safe and supportive space, we may begin to authentically express our needs and desires, while also creating and maintaining healthy boundaries for ourselves. Creating a life of greater joy and abundance is achieved through honest and open communication, reflection, and a deeper relationship with ourselves and with others.

Welcome. Many of my clients have experienced pain, disconnection, inconsistent routines, a low sense of self, or live with complicated big/deep feelings. They struggle with perfectionism. They have a hard time letting others in. They had unsafe, harmful, or invalidating experiences. It has stayed with them. They struggle to connect to their emotional world. Some tend to overextend themselves, ignore their needs, and feel wrong for putting themselves first. Some learned to tough things out, suppress, and hold it all in. Some feel lost and in the dark. They wonder how to process, understand, and heal, and have deeper connections.

An ideal client recognizes their substance use has become problematic and is motivated to make positive changes. They may face physical, emotional, and interpersonal issues and feel overwhelmed. Services they may require include diagnosis, counseling, group therapy, and referrals for additional resources. Their goals may include abstinence, physical/mental health improvement, relationship repair, and healthy coping strategies. Motivations for seeking help vary, but clients must have a desire for a fulfilling life free from negative consequences of substance abuse. Support and empowerment are essential in the journey to recovery.

My ideal client is tough. Perhaps someone that has never trusted a counselor before? Since I have worked in prisons and jails the last decade, I expect resistance, mistrust, and skepticism. Previously, I worked as a substance use counselor. In that field I learned that there are many pathways and versions towards recovery and change. None of them are wrong. If you are willing to be a little uncomfortable, lets do that together. Life can be messy, cruel, and hilarious. I'll grab a paddle and jump in the boat of uncertainty with you.

People come to counseling because they want something to be different in their lives. Experience has taught me that I must create a safe and supportive setting. And I must be skillful and respectful in order for positive and lasting change to occur. In over thirty years of practice I have seen amazing growth and transformation in the clients with whom I have worked.

Substance Use Therapists

How do substance and drug recovery or rehabilitation programs work?

In inpatient programs, individuals live in a facility with other clients in recovery; in outpatient programs, individuals reside at home. These facilities are staffed with healthcare professionals including physicians, nurses, psychologists, counselors, and psychotherapists. Staff often also includes people who have recovered themselves, serving as mentors and guides. These programs may use abstinence, harm reduction, detoxification, psychotherapy, and other methods.

How do 12-step programs combined with psychotherapy work?

Members of 12-step programs help each other reach abstinence and work to maintain it. These programs promote complete change in the individual’s emotional, mental, physical, and even spiritual perspectives. Some programs require that new members attend 90 meetings in 90 days. Many people do attend these programs in conjunction with their work in psychotherapy; the combination of therapy along with 12-step can be extremely effective.

How does harm reduction combined with psychotherapy work?

According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, harm reduction prevents death, injury, disease, overdose, and substance misuse. People who choose harm reduction for substance use reduce the amount of drugs they consume. It is not abstinence-based like a 12-step program, but combining harm reduction with psychotherapy proves to be effective for many people.

Are there specific medications for substance and drug use?

There are medications approved to treat substance use disorder—such as buprenorphine, methadone, naltrexone, and acamprosate. These medications do help people cope with substance use as well as avoid the problem of relapse. Naltrexone can help reduce cravings, methadone is an opioid medication used to treat severe pain, and acamprosate may help ease symptoms like poor sleep and anxious feelings.
