Each person who seeks counseling is on a unique journey with their own needs. We start by understanding what brings them to counseling and then set goals together. Every session may present different challenges, but we work on connecting everything we discuss, using techniques and strategies learned during our time together. This ensures that clients gain skills they can carry with them long after counseling ends.

I specialize in supporting working professionals, especially teachers, nurses, and students with anxiety or depression who are struggling in their careers, education or relationships. Many feel stuck, burnt out, irritable, and overwhelmed. Chronic stress makes it hard for them to connect with patients, students, administrators, and even their families. Some may prefer to be alone, even though it leads to ruminating over traumatic work experiences and substance use. My clients have demanding jobs, are highly trained and accustomed to solving problems. However, no one is immune to the long-term effects of stress and trauma.

Life brings us many challenges, and often times we feel depressed, angry, bitter, confused or even anxious. The beauty of life is that it gives an opportunity to review, reflect and reform our own stories so we can keep pushing through our adversities. No matter what age, race, creed or status, healing comes from the support of someone being able to help you take the very first step to recovery. When we are able to take very first step towards our healing, we find peace, joy, and forgiveness again.

How you doin'? Do you often say fine, and try to ignore how you feel? If so, I want to ask how are you REALLY doing? Many times we try to appear to be fine even when we aren't. Being honest with yourself about emotional distress, pain, struggle, fear or grief is essential to begin the healing process. Everyone reacts to difficulty differently. Stress in life can cause symptoms of anxiety, depression, anger, or insomnia to sneak up on us. Some may not be readily recognizable until we feel out of control wondering how did I get here. Are you ready to say “I am doing better”?

Ready to call yourself out on your own bullshit? Or maybe you're going through a life transition and not sure about your next steps. Anxiety, depression, or relationship conflict can make you feel alone even when you're surrounded by others. It may seem as though you're barely keeping your head above water. After 30 years as an occupational therapist helping individuals overcome physical challenges, I returned to school to pursue my desire to become a licensed counselor. I believe that mental health is as important as physical ability and that it is never too late to pursue a dream. I believe that asking for help is a sign of strength rather than one of weakness.

The connection we have with ourselves is integral to how we relate to and perceive life’s challenges and the world around us. Cultivating an authentic connection with ourselves and our relationships is important for a sense of well-being. In psychotherapy we work to bring about an authentic connection with self by developing a deeper self-understanding and a compassionate awareness to those difficult times, beliefs, patterns and perceptions that impact our quality of life. The insight, self-awareness and mindful presence gained in psychotherapy can be invaluable in facilitating a meaningful transformation of our life challenges and those essential connections with self and others.

Life is hard. Sometimes we struggle with thoughts of not being good enough. It feels like your brain is working against you. It's hard to eat, manage anxiety, or just enjoy life. If any of these statements ring a bell, please reach out. I want to provide a safe space where you can say all of the things you're keeping in and work toward a different experience.

Female Therapists

Does it matter what gender my therapist is?

In general, this is not an important factor, as there is no relationship between a therapist’s gender and their efficacy. Some clients, however, prefer to see therapists of a particular gender, whether due to their own past experiences with men and women, or ingrained beliefs about how people of different genders think and behave. Exploring the roots of such preferences and considering what one wants to address in therapy can help someone determine whether their therapist’s gender truly matters to them.

Should I see a female therapist?

Many people—not just women—prefer to see a female therapist, either because they believe that a woman will be able to relate to their specific challenges (for example, sexism in the workplace) or because they imagine feeling more comfortable disclosing sensitive information to a woman. Such beliefs may not turn out to be accurate, however, and adhering too rigidly to a gender preference can at times hinder a client from finding the best therapeutic match.

Do therapists get specific training to help with women’s concerns?

Therapists are trained to provide care to clients of any gender. However, some therapists—both men and women—may pursue additional training in feminist therapy, gender-specific issues, or women’s mental health. Female clients may wish to ask prospective therapists whether they have received specific training in the client’s primary area(s) of concern, or whether they have worked extensively with women on issues similar to their own.

How can I inquire about a therapist’s experience in treating women?

It’s OK—even encouraged!—to ask a therapist directly whether and how often they have treated women in the past, or whether they have treated women dealing with the client’s most prominent concern(s). Competent therapists will be happy to share their educational background, preferred treatment modalities, and prior client experience to help an individual find the therapist best suited to their needs.
