The recipe for successfully discovering your freedom from the pain of disappointment, trauma, and fear in your life and relationships is a unique combination of privacy, safety, nurturing, education, and therapy. Success often requires the right guide to blend these ingredients just how you need them to create a life that gives you joy. Joy is the name I was given at birth, but it’s taken me many years (just the right amount) to discover that my name is also my calling: a Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor.

Have you experienced overwhelming hurt stemming from family that have left you feeling anxious, detached, or chronically stressed? Maybe the chaos within your family has led to unresolved trauma that persists in your daily life, impacting your mental and emotional wellness. Family dynamic trauma can manifest in ways that disrupt our relationships, shape how we perceive ourselves and others, and often leaves us struggling with feelings of guilt or shame. Understanding these dynamics is a crucial step towards healing and reclaiming your life from the grips of past pain.

You’ve experienced some traumatic events in your life. Immediately afterwards, you might feel shock and denial. Longer term reactions might be unpredictable emotions, flashbacks, strained relationships and even physical symptoms like headaches or nausea. It can be hard to move on with life. I can help you find positive ways to manage your emotions. I am trained in trauma treatment and in EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing), a psychotherapy that enables people to heal from the symptoms and emotional distresses that are the result of disturbing life experiences.

Life can be hard. Being a college student can be hard. Life transitions (like starting college) often make it clear that some things just aren’t working. Maybe you’re feeling stuck, overwhelmed, anxious, alone, or depressed. Emotions, worries, or confusion become overwhelming and lead to unhelpful patterns. You've tried everything, but nothing has worked. You wonder if it will ever get better. All you want is peace, stability, and confidence in the direction your life is going. To feel good about yourself and your choices. To feel comfortable in your own skin and to believe in your ability to succeed.

The downfalls of life can leave us feeling worried, helpless, or anxious. We try to protect ourselves from pain…albeit trauma, losses, or hardships. We may experience panic attacks, intrusive thoughts, endless worries and many doubts. Fear, anxiety, or depression take us farther away from ourselves and the fulfilled life we can lead. Healing can feel scary, alone, and overwhelming. It takes courage to reach out for support.

Female Therapists

Does it matter what gender my therapist is?

In general, this is not an important factor, as there is no relationship between a therapist’s gender and their efficacy. Some clients, however, prefer to see therapists of a particular gender, whether due to their own past experiences with men and women, or ingrained beliefs about how people of different genders think and behave. Exploring the roots of such preferences and considering what one wants to address in therapy can help someone determine whether their therapist’s gender truly matters to them.

Should I see a female therapist?

Many people—not just women—prefer to see a female therapist, either because they believe that a woman will be able to relate to their specific challenges (for example, sexism in the workplace) or because they imagine feeling more comfortable disclosing sensitive information to a woman. Such beliefs may not turn out to be accurate, however, and adhering too rigidly to a gender preference can at times hinder a client from finding the best therapeutic match.

Do therapists get specific training to help with women’s concerns?

Therapists are trained to provide care to clients of any gender. However, some therapists—both men and women—may pursue additional training in feminist therapy, gender-specific issues, or women’s mental health. Female clients may wish to ask prospective therapists whether they have received specific training in the client’s primary area(s) of concern, or whether they have worked extensively with women on issues similar to their own.

How can I inquire about a therapist’s experience in treating women?

It’s OK—even encouraged!—to ask a therapist directly whether and how often they have treated women in the past, or whether they have treated women dealing with the client’s most prominent concern(s). Competent therapists will be happy to share their educational background, preferred treatment modalities, and prior client experience to help an individual find the therapist best suited to their needs.
