Unable to cope with the incongruity between the standards of society, family, or religion, we and our relationships inevitably break down.
As a person and as a counselor my focus is on developing relationships that foster wholeness. I am not interested in simply diagnosing and treating symptoms. I help clients who are interested in going deeper into their humanity and discovering the richness that can be found in seeking wholeness. I work with youth, adults, and couples who are experiencing existential, spiritual, and/or relational problems.

I specialize in psychodynamic family systems therapy, brainspotting, and somatic hypnosis for addressing and understanding trauma, anxiety, and addictions.
Welcome! I am glad you are here. My name is Mariah and I assist individuals, couples, and families to be the catalyst for change and healing in their lives. Dysfunctional life experiences compromise the energetic system of the mind-body connection. These experiences can compartmentalize in the psyche and physical body, creating depression, shame, fear, anxiety, suffering, and overall feelings of stuck-ness. Together, we will uncover your personal mythology to reveal a deeper understanding of your life experiences, the reasons behind why you feel stuck, and ignite your natural healing capacity to bring ease and reduce suffering.

However, I am strongly influenced by Attachment Theory, Internal Family Systems, Cognitive-Behavioral Theory and Mindfulness, as well as Emotionally-Focused Therapy for couples.
Everyone has the capacity to rise above life’s struggles but finding our way to healing or growth can be challenging. Many people feel overwhelmed, disconnected and distressed. I offer supportive, collaborative guidance in understanding negative behavior and thought patterns and navigating beyond them. Using evidence-based modalities I help adults, couples, professionals and older individuals address trauma, anxiety, depression, life transitions and other roadblocks. We work toward strengthening your identity, achieving a sense of inner calm and safety, and challenging beliefs that stand between you and who you want to be.

I help clients recognize the sources of their pain, which often means looking at family and other formative relationships.
We all need extra support sometimes. No matter what you're dealing with, my goal is to listen to what you need and help you get there. I do this by identifying patterns and offering new perspectives, so that you can better understand and love yourself. I bring my authenticity and humor into therapy to create a safe and nonjudgmental space.

I work with a variety of adult clients. Most people who consult me are confronting anxiety, depression, substance abuse, stress related disorders, and marital problems. In assessing the type of problems, people present, I look at lifestyle, current coping mechanisms, how we think and perceive our problem, our personal histories and what strategies specifically people have used to address their concerns. The use of mindfulness, learning to be more present in the moment allows for reduced reactivity, new ways of coping, problem solving, and relating to others in ones environment. It can lead to healing and transformation.

My mission is to help you build a loving and trusting relationship with your body free from eating disorders. Together we will explore your past history of experiences, relationships, and the social constructs that have led you to believe that your body is something that "needs to be fixed". Our work will be focused on healing those experiences, and applying lessons to your current life. In our work we will examine how your disordered eating or negative body image is impacting your life, relationships and goals. We will work to let go of the insecurities that are holding you back from living fully and showing up authentically.

We all find ourselves in dark places at time in our lives. This is a part of life. What is important is that we do not stay living in the dark. Sometimes we need help to break out of the darkness in our lives and minds. Trauma, loss, grief, substance use, and disrupted relationships can all result in finding yourself in a dark place.

Family Therapy

What do family therapists do?

A family therapist facilitates the process of understanding and improving how a family functions. The therapist will help family members develop empathy for one another. They’ll seek to understand existing patterns, misunderstandings, and conflicts that arise, in order to help the family arrive at a realistic, unified understanding and develop the coping skills they need to build stronger relationships.

How long does therapy for families take to work?

Therapy manifests differently in every family; a common time frame is 12 weekly sessions, but some families may see improvement after just a few weeks. Families should discuss their goals with the therapist at the beginning of the process and periodically revisit those goals to assess their progress together.

How can you encourage a family member to attend family therapy?

You can encourage family members to attend therapy by expressing with both love and concern the challenges you see and explaining how a therapist could help the family navigate those challenges together. An outside perspective can help everyone feel heard, get on the same page, and develop new skills. If family members are still hesitant, it may be helpful to emphasize that family therapy is short-term—it won’t last forever.

Is therapy for families effective?

Family therapy can significantly improve family dynamics and relationships. Research suggests that family therapy can help individuals understand their role in the family, communicate and solve problems together, reduce conflict and draw boundaries when necessary, and develop coping skills for stressors, major life changes, and mental or physical illnesses within the family.
