If you are facing challenges within your family or personal relationships, experiencing stressors at work, feeling stuck making major life decisions (maybe a little bit of everything?) I can help. My journey into offering therapy developed from a childhood curiosity about others' journeys and a desire for everyone to be comfortable in their own skin. My style is informal and inquisitive. Among other techniques, I use solutions-focused methods to help reframe your perspective on your experiences.

My focus is on anxiety, depression, grief, life phases/transitions, career issues/changes, family conflicts, and relational issues/changes.
We all go through transitions and different waves in our life but ultimately we want to live a genuine authentic life. We have the capacity to obtain it but how to navigate it, is the challenge. I have been practicing in New York City since 2015. Giving guidance to those who want to take the path to make changes and implement strategies to handle conflicts, transitions and issues which create barriers to their own happiness. Currently, all sessions are Tele-therapy (video) sessions, weekly for 45 to 60 minutes. I provide talk therapy that is reflective, explorative with compassion. Treatment goals are a collaborative effort.

Times of transition, uncertainty, and hardship can be frustrating and painful for families and relationships. It's important to know that it can happen to anyone, and it is not your fault. There is a pathway out! The primary focus of my practice is families facing difficult issues. Marital issues, parenting issues, and extended family issues adversely impact many families, and I work collaboratively with families to bring clarity and feelings of well-being into their lives through learning practical communication skills.

I can offer individual, premarital, family and couples counseling.
I specialize in cultural and gender specific issues, particularly with women of color and the special obstacles they face due to the fact that many are not taught to date. This is a very important skill that leads to relationship stability and happiness. On the other hand men face obstacles regarding their challenges of staying faithful and oftentimes blame "biology" and their mates for this instead of getting to the core of the problem and the anxiety they feel when contemplating commitment and monogamy.

A common misconception is that therapy is only useful when something is going wrong in our lives and this often leads to us internalizing too much and powering through our days without taking the time to care for and strengthen ourselves from within. I help clients struggling with anxiety and depression related to issues such as work stress, microaggressions, family relationships and racial traumas. You are the expert of your life and my goal is to serve as an empathetic and supportive guide on your journey to feeling empowered and living your Best Life as your Best Self.

I have been interested in family dynamics, trauma, and resilience for many years, and I am attuned to the challenges of opening up in therapy.
Our lives are woven with stories—the tales inherited from others (relatives, social and professional circles) and the ones we craft for ourselves...and life happens. Juggling familial duties, chronic pain, toxic environments, life or career transitions, the experience of loss, harassment, trauma, or cultural disconnection challenge our inner narrative. It interferes with our ability to mend the threads of our stories, to fully express ourselves and flourish. In my practice, I assist patients in untangling their stories, finding new perspectives/meaning, and actively pursuing aspirations.

As a mental health clinican with over forty years of life experience, I believe that perception affects an individual's performance. I find that if a person believes they can do something well, they will do it well and vice versa. I am especially interested in this observable fact and how an individual's perception and cognitive process affects their behavior. Interestingly enough most people normalize behaviors, behaving according to how their community, family, friends or worst yet life long patterns of maladaptive behaviors; equipping my clients with a diverse set of tools to handle life stressors is essential for optimum living.

Family Therapy

What do family therapists do?

A family therapist facilitates the process of understanding and improving how a family functions. The therapist will help family members develop empathy for one another. They’ll seek to understand existing patterns, misunderstandings, and conflicts that arise, in order to help the family arrive at a realistic, unified understanding and develop the coping skills they need to build stronger relationships.

How long does therapy for families take to work?

Therapy manifests differently in every family; a common time frame is 12 weekly sessions, but some families may see improvement after just a few weeks. Families should discuss their goals with the therapist at the beginning of the process and periodically revisit those goals to assess their progress together.

How can you encourage a family member to attend family therapy?

You can encourage family members to attend therapy by expressing with both love and concern the challenges you see and explaining how a therapist could help the family navigate those challenges together. An outside perspective can help everyone feel heard, get on the same page, and develop new skills. If family members are still hesitant, it may be helpful to emphasize that family therapy is short-term—it won’t last forever.

Is therapy for families effective?

Family therapy can significantly improve family dynamics and relationships. Research suggests that family therapy can help individuals understand their role in the family, communicate and solve problems together, reduce conflict and draw boundaries when necessary, and develop coping skills for stressors, major life changes, and mental or physical illnesses within the family.
