I work with adults, teens and pre-teens, and do individual, family and couples therapy.
My approach to treatment is centered on creating a safe and collaborative environment for those who are seeking help. I believe in the concept that there is a continuum of health, and while at one level a behavior, thought or feeling can feel healthy, at another level this same thought, feeling or behavior can be experienced as problematic. Part of our work together may be determining what is feeling problematic to you, and how we can use your strengths to shift your experiences so that they are more in line with the life you would like to be living.

People come for help with all kinds of troubles: heartbreak, life transitions, complicated relationships, family worries...Therapy is about having a professional with wisdom and compassion help you find your next right step. Choosing someone to trust with sensitive issues is difficult, but you will likely know very soon upon talking with someone if they are a good fit. You will want someone with a good deal of training and experience. You will need someone who you feel confident truly understands your concerns and who has the expertise to help you resolve them as quickly as possible.

I have a background in individual, couples, and family therapy.
Currently offering couples counseling sessions. Please inquire if interested. My name is Tanya Farrar Brooks and I am a licensed mental health counselor who began her own therapeutic journey while very much entrenched in an unhealthy relationship. When I began therapy, I could not have known the impact that it would have on my life. Through that process, I was able to find my strength, and my voice. Allow me to use that experience and the clinical training that accompanied it to help support you through life's challenges.

Brene brown once said " We can't practice compassion with other people if we can't treat ourselves kindly". It can be so easy to put yourself last or forget about yourself all together. It's okay to prioritize yourself and your needs in order to care for others. I have worked with individuals, couples and families on all walks of life. As well as working with first responders and military veterans and their families.

Family Therapy

What do family therapists do?

A family therapist facilitates the process of understanding and improving how a family functions. The therapist will help family members develop empathy for one another. They’ll seek to understand existing patterns, misunderstandings, and conflicts that arise, in order to help the family arrive at a realistic, unified understanding and develop the coping skills they need to build stronger relationships.

How long does therapy for families take to work?

Therapy manifests differently in every family; a common time frame is 12 weekly sessions, but some families may see improvement after just a few weeks. Families should discuss their goals with the therapist at the beginning of the process and periodically revisit those goals to assess their progress together.

How can you encourage a family member to attend family therapy?

You can encourage family members to attend therapy by expressing with both love and concern the challenges you see and explaining how a therapist could help the family navigate those challenges together. An outside perspective can help everyone feel heard, get on the same page, and develop new skills. If family members are still hesitant, it may be helpful to emphasize that family therapy is short-term—it won’t last forever.

Is therapy for families effective?

Family therapy can significantly improve family dynamics and relationships. Research suggests that family therapy can help individuals understand their role in the family, communicate and solve problems together, reduce conflict and draw boundaries when necessary, and develop coping skills for stressors, major life changes, and mental or physical illnesses within the family.
