I specialize in working with individuals, couples, and families on issues related to difficult, complicated, or strained family relationships, including marital issues.
I take a holistic and integrative approach to therapy which involves integrating various elements of different theories and practice. I lean most heavily on approaches focused on how people’s thinking can change feelings and behaviors while also implementing an approach focused on helping clients achieve their highest potential. Instead of energy spent on the past or negative behaviors, I emphasize the goodness in clients and work toward growth and self-actualization. I also use approaches oriented toward problem-solving including Hypnotherapy, NLP Brain Training, Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT), Coaching, and EMDR therapy.

I specialize in child and family therapy with an emphasis in marriage counseling, but I am open to helping anyone that is looking for a way to improve their lives through understanding their emotions and how those emotions are affecting their behaviors and actions. I have been married for the past 16 years and have 5 children of my own, and I understand the common struggles of maintaining a working relationship with a spouse and with children. I spent 10 years working with the foster care system, and I spent the last 4 years supervising a school counseling program and conducting individual counseling for an array of individuals.

Currently accepting young adults, and adults seeking therapy to create a better version of themselves. I work with clients who have a history of trauma and wish to overcome past issues to focus on the here and now. I specialize in short term therapy for those who are struggling with a recent stressor/traumatic event(s), such as an unexpected pregnancy, transition into a new role (parent/promotion), loss of a loved one, serious car accident, loss of job, recent move, diagnosis of a chronic illness, change in family dynamic, etc. My priority for individuals is to promote healing in a safe place where their story can be told.

Core fantasies bind you to original intergeneration family patterns.
Running, running, running to where do I ask? Running away from painful feelings is often a compromised solution to painful feelings. Pain and Suffering is the portal to emotional maturity. No one is spared suffering but it is how we choose to make meaning out of loss that makes the difference between thriving or a life of bitterness and defeat. Intentional committment to understanding your unique narrative is the task I can help you with. Together we will identify the patterns of behavior, and intense emotional feelings that dysregulate your emotions. Please visit and contact me through my website; PaulaJHamm.com and send request

I work with each family to develop goals that meet their needs and help to facilitate growth and development.
I believe in the power of play to help children connect with and express their inner experiences and emotions. Play is a safe space to explore and work through intense feelings, leading to a sense of mastery and the ability to express feelings in a well-regulated way. Because development occurs through warm and supportive relationships, I work to build a meaningful connection with each child and family, meeting them where they are and utilizing areas of strength to work on things that are more difficult and challenging.

I later achieved my CSAC credentials, working with substance abuse groups, and now, as an LCSW at Family Insight, I offer telehealth therapy.
Ever feel trapped in a cramped mental apartment with relentless self-doubt as your unwelcome companion? It's like sharing space with a critical, nitpicking roommate. Your mind should be your refuge, but negative self-talk fills it with clutter. But know this: you hold the lease, the power is in your hands, and it's high time we evict your inner critic and start creating a supportive environment so you can find comfort in your own mental headspace once again.

I would like to thank you for considering us to work with you and your family.
I enjoy working with clients where they are and helping them to work through the difficult situations they are experiencing. Each person has their own unique gifts and strengths that they can learn to depend on. The transition through life can be a very difficult time for both the patient and their family. My goals when working with patients are to help them increase their communication, teach them to embrace differences, help them accept themselves and empower them to tell their own story to find out who they want to be. I have worked with a vast variety of patients from residential, acute, crisis, PHP and IOP services.

I am available to support teens, adults and couples through their life changes, especially those challenges that cause stress, depression or anxiety. Relationship dysfunction, family crises, and traumatic events often leave people with no safe space to examine their options and develop a plan for a better future. I help identify the obstacles that block the way and focus on each individual's strengths for making positive improvements for the next stage.

Family Therapy

What do family therapists do?

A family therapist facilitates the process of understanding and improving how a family functions. The therapist will help family members develop empathy for one another. They’ll seek to understand existing patterns, misunderstandings, and conflicts that arise, in order to help the family arrive at a realistic, unified understanding and develop the coping skills they need to build stronger relationships.

How long does therapy for families take to work?

Therapy manifests differently in every family; a common time frame is 12 weekly sessions, but some families may see improvement after just a few weeks. Families should discuss their goals with the therapist at the beginning of the process and periodically revisit those goals to assess their progress together.

How can you encourage a family member to attend family therapy?

You can encourage family members to attend therapy by expressing with both love and concern the challenges you see and explaining how a therapist could help the family navigate those challenges together. An outside perspective can help everyone feel heard, get on the same page, and develop new skills. If family members are still hesitant, it may be helpful to emphasize that family therapy is short-term—it won’t last forever.

Is therapy for families effective?

Family therapy can significantly improve family dynamics and relationships. Research suggests that family therapy can help individuals understand their role in the family, communicate and solve problems together, reduce conflict and draw boundaries when necessary, and develop coping skills for stressors, major life changes, and mental or physical illnesses within the family.
