Hello! My name is Joanna and thank you for reading my profile. I provide individual and family therapy to clients of most ages (5 and older). Prior to working as a therapist, I was a special education teacher. Working as a teacher taught me the importance of a trusting relationship. I love working as a therapist and my favorite part is the unique relationship I build with each client. It is through this trusting, judgement-free relationship that clients can feel safe to self-examine. I work side by side with clients to explore the root causes of unhelpful behaviors and identify a better way of relating to oneself and others.

The techniques used are often simple, ranging from somatic work, kundalini yoga to psychodrama, internal family systems, and bioenergetics.
Do you want results? Are you finding that you keep getting in your own way? That your emotions, trauma, pain, past experiences and anxiety are preventing you from living the life you are meant to live? Or perhaps things are just not clicking no matter how hard you try? The good news is that there is always a way, a technique or perspective that can and will shift you and your life. The catch? You need to be willing to step into the unknown and get uncomfortable.

My clients include adults who want to break cycles of family trauma, those seeking to embrace a neurodivergent identity and use new tools to ensure success, adults in recovery, caregivers, wounded healers, and those with chronic illness adjusting to a new "normal.
I believe that human beings have an amazing ability to adapt to extremely difficult situations, but sometimes using old coping strategies can encourage toxic situations at home or at work. When the tendency to accommodate others and the desire for approval goes unchecked, we betray our authentic sense of self and undermine our success. This is particularly true with adults suffering from symptoms related to childhood trauma, addiction, and those who have had to "mask" due to neurodivergent experience. Using evidenced based treatment, I work with adults and couples to create their best lives.

I’m a Clinical Professional Counselor Intern, with a Master’s in Marriage and Family Counseling.
I believe one of the bravest things you can do is begin to understand who you are and the story you want to tell. Many people see therapy as a one-sided conversation, with little opportunity for interaction or getting to experience each other as real people. My desire is that no one will ever feel that way in any session. We’ll have a collaborative experience where I get to help you achieve your goals, provide another perspective and set a vision for the life you want now and for the future. Calling a therapist can be intimidating. I hope you will take a moment (and maybe a deep breath) to call and see how I can help.

I was an instructor of Human Sexual Behavior at UNLV, in the Department of Marriage and Family Therapy.
Is your relationship in crisis? Are you feeling angry, frustrated and resentful towards your partner? Would you like to feel loved, heard, respected and valued? If the love and connection has gone, let me help you bring it back. We'll replace the negative, ineffective patterns of communication that have caused you to be "stuck", and focus on creating healthy and positive new ways of interacting. If your sexual needs are not being met, are dealing with the trauma of extra marital affairs or escalating problematic sexual behavior, I can help you heal, reconnect and move on.

Family Therapy
What do family therapists do?
A family therapist facilitates the process of understanding and improving how a family functions. The therapist will help family members develop empathy for one another. They’ll seek to understand existing patterns, misunderstandings, and conflicts that arise, in order to help the family arrive at a realistic, unified understanding and develop the coping skills they need to build stronger relationships.
How long does therapy for families take to work?
Therapy manifests differently in every family; a common time frame is 12 weekly sessions, but some families may see improvement after just a few weeks. Families should discuss their goals with the therapist at the beginning of the process and periodically revisit those goals to assess their progress together.
How can you encourage a family member to attend family therapy?
You can encourage family members to attend therapy by expressing with both love and concern the challenges you see and explaining how a therapist could help the family navigate those challenges together. An outside perspective can help everyone feel heard, get on the same page, and develop new skills. If family members are still hesitant, it may be helpful to emphasize that family therapy is short-term—it won’t last forever.
Is therapy for families effective?
Family therapy can significantly improve family dynamics and relationships. Research suggests that family therapy can help individuals understand their role in the family, communicate and solve problems together, reduce conflict and draw boundaries when necessary, and develop coping skills for stressors, major life changes, and mental or physical illnesses within the family.
