Using mindfulness techniques and a combination of different theoretical approaches, a holistic approach can help with depression, anxiety, emotional difficulties, trauma, stress, family issues and work-related problems.
Integrative, connected, holistic, and person-centered are just some of the words that I would use to describe my therapeutic approach with my clients. ‍I believe that your body, mind, and spirit are all connected and play a crucial role in your healing journey, and understanding this connection can encourage you to thrive and heal on a deeper level. ‍

In my free time, I enjoy backpacking, disc golf, grilling out with friends and family, and mint chocolate chip ice cream.
I believe in creating a warm and safe place where people can feel comfortable working through their difficulties and emerge with new strength. I work with adolescents, adults, couples, and families on a wide range of personal and interpersonal issues. Some people have a clear idea of the problem they want to address, and others are simply experiencing too much difficulty and only know that something needs to change. In either case, I explore their individual experiences and perspectives, and what they would like out of the therapeutic process before collaboratively developing the interventions and tools that best meet their needs.

My experience includes providing person centered and supportive individual psychotherapy, psycho-education, and psychosocial skills development to adults, of diverse backgrounds using a variety of approaches including Motivational Interviewing (MI), Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), EMDR Therapy and Internal Family Systems (IFS).
Life is about transition and transformation, from the time we enter the world, and with every transition comes increased exposure to greater life stressors. These stressors may result in sleep disturbance, anxiety, depression, PTSD, impaired relationships, anger or addiction. Through therapy, we will explore the origin of those symptoms, identify positive coping techniques, establish healthy boundaries and implement change, allowing for personal growth and improved self-efficacy. Hope and healing begins today, with just one phone call.

I can help by validating their feelings, identifying stressors, teaching coping strategies and working with the client and family as a unit and as individuals.
My ideal client would be a child or teen, but can do adults if needed! Their issues could span a variety of areas. Coping with trauma, self-esteem issues, eating disorders and behavioral disorders are just a few areas of issues I can address. Their needs and goals may vary but adjusting to life situations, learning coping strategies and recognizing themselves as worthwhile people would be my goals.

Life is full of different rhythms. Some rhythms are fast...some slow...some feel like a scattered mix. Other rhythms are joyful...complex...life changing. If you are reading this, you likely have a rhythm that you want support in understanding, healing, or changing. I can help.

We navigate new and stressful situations on a daily basis. Sometimes we are satisfied with our ability to respond. At other times, we feel stuck, inadequate, or unable to find a purpose for moving forward. Maybe we missed something significant, fell into an old and unwanted pattern, or wish things would go differently in our relationships. Whether looking through a lens of deficit or strength, family influence or individual accomplishment, spiritual background, relationships, trauma history, or any other way of filtering our experiences, we are constantly learning more about ourselves.

I enjoy working with individuals who are looking within themselves for the answers to the questions. The key to inner healing is partially about asking the right questions. I am best suited to working with individuals who struggle with anxiety; depression; childhood trauma and issues related to being raised in a home with alcoholic parents or family members. I have experience working with parents who have children with disabilities. It can be difficult to be parenting a child with a mental illness or autism. I am person-centered in my approach. I work collaboratively with individuals to help each reach his/her potential.

Hello, my name is Amy Harbison. I am a licensed clinical social worker who specializes in childhood trauma and family counseling. If you or your loved one is experiencing distress in their relationships or if past traumatic experiences are stealing your joy, I would be honored to walk alongside you in your healing journey. The desire to see strong families and healthy relationships are two of the primary reasons I chose to pursue a career in clinical social work. The parent child relationship is the first one in which we learn who we are to others and where our sense of value and worth begins to form.

Areas of interest: Family of origin issues, interpersonal relationship difficulties, body image concerns, college and graduate school stress, identity exploration, and pregnancy/post-partum concerns.
Many of us have experienced hardships and suffering in our lives, and sometimes we need help. I believe psychotherapy is a space that can help by providing healing and comfort to those who need it. Many things can contribute to life’s difficulties including historical, systemic, emotional, relational, and interpersonal factors. In therapy, I am interested in how these complexities impact you.

Family Therapy

What do family therapists do?

A family therapist facilitates the process of understanding and improving how a family functions. The therapist will help family members develop empathy for one another. They’ll seek to understand existing patterns, misunderstandings, and conflicts that arise, in order to help the family arrive at a realistic, unified understanding and develop the coping skills they need to build stronger relationships.

How long does therapy for families take to work?

Therapy manifests differently in every family; a common time frame is 12 weekly sessions, but some families may see improvement after just a few weeks. Families should discuss their goals with the therapist at the beginning of the process and periodically revisit those goals to assess their progress together.

How can you encourage a family member to attend family therapy?

You can encourage family members to attend therapy by expressing with both love and concern the challenges you see and explaining how a therapist could help the family navigate those challenges together. An outside perspective can help everyone feel heard, get on the same page, and develop new skills. If family members are still hesitant, it may be helpful to emphasize that family therapy is short-term—it won’t last forever.

Is therapy for families effective?

Family therapy can significantly improve family dynamics and relationships. Research suggests that family therapy can help individuals understand their role in the family, communicate and solve problems together, reduce conflict and draw boundaries when necessary, and develop coping skills for stressors, major life changes, and mental or physical illnesses within the family.
