I work from an integrative framework utilizing psychodynamic and family systems approaches in therapy.
Are you struggling with feelings of anxiety, depression, or discontent with certain relationships and circumstances in your life? Symptoms such as anxiety, depression, relationship distress, anger, and addiction are messengers that something in your life requires attention. I am privileged to walk alongside you in your journey towards a deeper understanding and connection with who you are. Together we will explore and attend to the underlying issues and feelings of these symptoms as a step towards healing. Simultaneously, we may adopt ways to cope with and alleviate the pain, loneliness, and difficulties you experience.

My work is a unique interweaving of relational psychoanalysis, attachment theory, and family systems.
I’ve found that most of my clients are looking to explore themselves in a sophisticated way. They describe themselves as “living on autopilot." They can manage stress but are having difficulty really getting to know the core of who they are or what they want in life. Maybe you’re someone who longs to “make something of yourself” and feels the pressure to succeed in school or the workplace. You might be grieving the loss of important relationships while adjusting to new social landscapes. Or you’re feeling the weight of society’s social clock. My goal is to help you both resolve symptoms and impart meaning to your experiences.

I also specialize in couples/family therapy.
Do you have trouble with anxiety, depression, and relationship/family issues due to trauma? Past experiences can create imprints onto your brain that activate your fight/flight responses whenever your emotions feel dysregulated, but life without the constant feeling of being on edge is possible. Those traumatic memories don’t have to permanently influence who you are meant to be. Through therapy, you will gain control of your feelings/thoughts and your response to everyday life hurdles. Healing from trauma can create healthier beliefs about yourself and your relationships along with sustainable changes.

Life can feel impossible to avoid struggling and we often don't feel we have the skills to cope successfully through. Unfortunately, sometimes we don't have all the resources we need for a given situation. Parts of us take on desperate roles trying to help us to survive. This might look like anxiety, depression, PTSD, addiction, and relationship/family issues. I aim to help you process unresolved issues and feelings and find solutions.

As a therapist, my broader goal is in helping you experience higher states of fulfillment, joy, and peace of mind - rather than simply helping you decrease the symptoms you're having. It's about happiness and each person's unique recipe for that. I work well with a wide variety of psychoemotional problems such as anxiety, depression, substance misuse, and relationship difficulties with family, friendships, the self, or your love life. I have years of experience working in addiction treatment which has allowed me to work with an incredibly diverse population of all backgrounds.

I am particularly effective with the adolescent population (ages 12-25, yes that is right!) and their particular needs, school and family stress and the scary transitions into adulthood.
We all want to be understood and feel like we are making progress towards our life goals. My approach is comforting, humorous, humble, creative and lovingly direct. Everyone needs connection and in my experience the benefits of connecting and being seen by someone in therapy are many. Are you interested in working on an issue related to a relationship, major life change, depression and/or anxiety? Visit my website www.rachelwardlmft.com or call at 626-327-3456 for a free 25 minute consultation to see if we are a good fit. Making sure we connect is very important.

My focus in working with clients is to explore what prevents them from having the quality of life that they desire. One of my core beliefs is that people do the best they can given the context of their lives and the support available to them. People are endlessly remaking or discovering themselves; therefore, my clients and I work together to deepen their awareness of themselves and how they function in their world (with family, relationships, at work, school, friends) by exploring their experiences. Over a period of time, these explorations lead to new perspectives, increased choices, and new behaviors.

Family Therapy

What do family therapists do?

A family therapist facilitates the process of understanding and improving how a family functions. The therapist will help family members develop empathy for one another. They’ll seek to understand existing patterns, misunderstandings, and conflicts that arise, in order to help the family arrive at a realistic, unified understanding and develop the coping skills they need to build stronger relationships.

How long does therapy for families take to work?

Therapy manifests differently in every family; a common time frame is 12 weekly sessions, but some families may see improvement after just a few weeks. Families should discuss their goals with the therapist at the beginning of the process and periodically revisit those goals to assess their progress together.

How can you encourage a family member to attend family therapy?

You can encourage family members to attend therapy by expressing with both love and concern the challenges you see and explaining how a therapist could help the family navigate those challenges together. An outside perspective can help everyone feel heard, get on the same page, and develop new skills. If family members are still hesitant, it may be helpful to emphasize that family therapy is short-term—it won’t last forever.

Is therapy for families effective?

Family therapy can significantly improve family dynamics and relationships. Research suggests that family therapy can help individuals understand their role in the family, communicate and solve problems together, reduce conflict and draw boundaries when necessary, and develop coping skills for stressors, major life changes, and mental or physical illnesses within the family.
