On the outside, it may appear that you've got everything together and are living a wonderful life. But on the inside, you may never feel good enough, or feel so overwhelmed by life and stress that doing anything feels exhausting. Maybe it's not you experiencing this but maybe your child is. They may act out, not listen, or fight with you or their siblings about anything and everything. Perhaps the family is fighting and it feels like no one can get along. It's time to make some changes.

I am a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (TN and AL) practicing since 2008.
"We do not see things as they are, we see them as we are." -Anais Nin per Talmudic origin. We must create things twice; once in our minds, and once articulated. When we think our thoughts, it lights up one part of the brain, and when we speak our thoughts, it lights up a different part of the brain. There is often something very different when we articulate our thoughts, and they change in some way. Talking out these experiences in a narrative way assists us in making sense of how we feel about those experiences.

Do you desire a rich, full life but find that life's difficulties, personal emotional issues and unresolved past or present conflicts get in the way? There is hope! Everyone has the capacity for healing and to make the changes they desire. Inherent in each person is the ability to 'live life better' and understanding 'what makes you tick' is key. Reaching out for help can feel overwhelming. After working closely with people in the mental health field for the past 7 years, I've learned that we all need support at times. I enjoy working with people of all ages to identify their triggers, process their trauma, and learn healthy coping skills and boundaries. I also love family work where I can help people navigate challenges and improve their relationships. My favorite clients are the ones that come into counseling with curiosity about their past and and a desire for growth and healing.

If you find yourself, your partnership/marriage, or your family struggling relationally, emotionally, and/or spiritually, I'd like to invite you to reach out and schedule a session.
We're all living lives filled with the challenges, wonders, conflicts, surprises, grief and pain, joys and gratitude that make for a grand story. And we find meaning in the context of our relationships with self, others, and, if you're so inclined, a higher power. Like every good story, there are moments where we discover that we need help—we need another to join us, support us, and guide us on our journeys.

I completed my practicum at The Family Institute at Northwestern, and have since had extensive experience in both private practice and PHP/IOP settings.
Therapy is a place to seek out growth, understanding, and compassion toward yourself and others. And since everyone has a unique story, impacted by people and experiences both past and present, it is crucial that therapy is personalized. Whether you're working toward self-exploration, acceptance, change, or all of the above, we can find a path together. I will collaborate with you in assessing concerns and working toward growth, while providing support throughout your journey.

I use a Cyclical Psychodynamic approach. This is an integrative approach to therapy, which combines empirically supported therapies- relational psychodynamics, cognitive-behavioral therapy, attachment theory, and family systems theory. It works by creating corrective emotional experiences in therapy and developing new ways of interacting with others outside of therapy. This process facilitates increased awareness, resilience, better strategies, and increased effectiveness.

I have experience as a therapist in outpatient mental health clinics, inpatient psychiatric hospitals, cancer treatment facilities, substance abuse treatment centers and schools. With 10 years of serving both individuals and family systems, I have addressed a vast array of symptoms related to mental health concerns. I tend to focus on the whole body and its connections. I understand counseling as growth, much in the same way a tree grows. In counseling we honor our roots, noting where we came from while stretching our branches high and reaching for what we wish to become.

Family Therapy

What do family therapists do?

A family therapist facilitates the process of understanding and improving how a family functions. The therapist will help family members develop empathy for one another. They’ll seek to understand existing patterns, misunderstandings, and conflicts that arise, in order to help the family arrive at a realistic, unified understanding and develop the coping skills they need to build stronger relationships.

How long does therapy for families take to work?

Therapy manifests differently in every family; a common time frame is 12 weekly sessions, but some families may see improvement after just a few weeks. Families should discuss their goals with the therapist at the beginning of the process and periodically revisit those goals to assess their progress together.

How can you encourage a family member to attend family therapy?

You can encourage family members to attend therapy by expressing with both love and concern the challenges you see and explaining how a therapist could help the family navigate those challenges together. An outside perspective can help everyone feel heard, get on the same page, and develop new skills. If family members are still hesitant, it may be helpful to emphasize that family therapy is short-term—it won’t last forever.

Is therapy for families effective?

Family therapy can significantly improve family dynamics and relationships. Research suggests that family therapy can help individuals understand their role in the family, communicate and solve problems together, reduce conflict and draw boundaries when necessary, and develop coping skills for stressors, major life changes, and mental or physical illnesses within the family.
