Family Therapy in Manchester, MA
For family discipline concerns I offer children and the adults both structure and understanding so that they learn to make workable choices and take on positions of willing responsibility.
Most of us want to be in connection. We want to be known and acknowledged for our strengths and contributions and to be safely understood for our vulnerabilities. How can this happen? Supportive work in therapy brings that knowing awareness into play. We build trust; we listen more. Mutual respect replaces resentments, anger, and the defeat of resignation. There emerges readiness to experience comfort, ease in interactions, and confidence to handle life's situations with increased skill. Intimacy, vibrancy, and laughter naturally find a place again in our experience of each other and in the ups and downs of life.

Are you exhausted from dealing with a narcissist or toxic relationship, whether it’s with a partner, ex, or family member? Have you tried everything to successfully interact with this person but still find yourself suffering, going in circles, and feeling utterly drained? You may even be questioning your own sanity, wondering if you’re the crazy one. To make matters worse, the toxic person may have manipulated others into believing they are the victim, and it’s unbearable to watch everyone else fall for their facade when you know the truth. You’re not alone and you’re not crazy. I have so been there and understand the struggle!

The people who come to me tend to be those having difficulty in relationships; those dealing with life transitions (e.g., divorce, illness, marriage, moves, changes in work or studies); and those experiencing loss, trauma, anxiety. or depression. Psychotherapy often involves addressing the fear, denial, avoidance, and other obstacles that prevent us from constructively attending to psychological pain and from leading a life that is true to who we are and to how we want to be in the world. I work best with people who are open to change and who are willing to consider their resistance to change.

Let me help you move forward. Life can be complicated with a mix of twists and turns which can be hard to negotiate. Making the decision to speak with a therapist is a first step towards relieving some pressure and a courageous step forward. Although asking for help can be overwhelming, why wait?

Stress, sadness, anxiety, relationship problems, loss, and challenges at school and work are problems we all face as human beings at one time or another. Yet, life doesn't come with an instruction manual, and finding happiness and well-being often seems difficult if not impossible. However, I believe that by understanding some simple principles about the mind and its functioning allows us to tap into our innate wisdom and common sense, make healthier choices, overcome challenges and experience more peace and contentment. I believe change happens in the present through insight, education and understanding, not by delving into the past.

Beneficial therapy is founded upon a strong relationship between the therapist and the client. There is something healing about connecting with another person, about being seen, about feeling understood. With each of my clients, I work to create a warm relationship where they know they will be met with respect and empathy. I also recognize that for some people, especially people with non-dominant cultural identities, mental health care has not always felt welcoming. With that in mind, I work to provide a space where everyone can experience a sense of belonging and feel safe being their full selves. I am LGBTQIA+ affirming.

Family Therapy
What do family therapists do?
A family therapist facilitates the process of understanding and improving how a family functions. The therapist will help family members develop empathy for one another. They’ll seek to understand existing patterns, misunderstandings, and conflicts that arise, in order to help the family arrive at a realistic, unified understanding and develop the coping skills they need to build stronger relationships.
How long does therapy for families take to work?
Therapy manifests differently in every family; a common time frame is 12 weekly sessions, but some families may see improvement after just a few weeks. Families should discuss their goals with the therapist at the beginning of the process and periodically revisit those goals to assess their progress together.
How can you encourage a family member to attend family therapy?
You can encourage family members to attend therapy by expressing with both love and concern the challenges you see and explaining how a therapist could help the family navigate those challenges together. An outside perspective can help everyone feel heard, get on the same page, and develop new skills. If family members are still hesitant, it may be helpful to emphasize that family therapy is short-term—it won’t last forever.
Is therapy for families effective?
Family therapy can significantly improve family dynamics and relationships. Research suggests that family therapy can help individuals understand their role in the family, communicate and solve problems together, reduce conflict and draw boundaries when necessary, and develop coping skills for stressors, major life changes, and mental or physical illnesses within the family.
