I am trained in marriage and family therapy, behavioral issues, trauma recovery, and spiritual issues.
Are you feeling overwhelmed? Life, as we have known it is gone! Are you feeling anxious about the future, finances, your health, and the people you love? Will it ever be normal again? Has depression set in because of the isolation? Is it difficult to maintain relationships with social distancing practices? Are you afraid for love ones whose health is already compromised? Have you begun to see you child go through changes and difficulties due to the “new normal”? Will things ever be the same again and what will the "new normal" look like? Is sleep more difficult because of the thoughts racing through our minds? So many questions

After being married for over 40 years undergoing intense educational training in the areas of family and marriage, I believe the information that I have gained in the marriage and family field has adequately prepared me to assist others in learning how to systemically work through some of the family issues that they may face in today's society.
The poet William Ernest Henley (1849-1903) penned the words : "I am the master of my fate: the captain of my soul." The message that Henley was so eloquently trying to convey is, that while we may face challenges in our lives, we should not let them defeat us! The fact is, life comes with rewards and defeats. Just as we have actions within us that respond to rewards, we also have actions within us to face defeats and the ability to learn how to rebuild, restore, and renew ourselves. One of the ways of renewing, sustaining, and rebuilding ourselves is through therapy.

I also come from a proud military family and am a passionate Veteran advocate.
My love for helping others overcome life challenges stems from my early days in college when I was a member of the service fraternity Alpha Phi Omega. This organization introduced me to community based service projects that were life changing. It was in these early days that I had the rewarding opportunity to change lives and help others see bright possibilities for their future. Through counseling I am able to continue to help others by empowering individuals and families from a strengths based perspective.

Our lives are shaped by the different events we experience. Those events have great influence on our decision making process. Some of those influences may negatively impact relationships. This is true with couples, friends, family and even ourselves. We experience issues with conflict, grief, trauma, etc. and try to deal with them the best way we know how. It is a misconception that people are weak or have no faith when seeking professional help. I believe that seeking help from a therapist is a sign of strength. It is one of the bravest things a person can do.

I use a holistic and systemic approach and consider all areas (family, school, peers, community and culture) that might influence a young person's life.
I work with youth ages 3-18 and adults, specializing in the preschool and elementary age group. My goal as a counselors to provide the type of attention, acceptance and unconditional positive regard that Fred Rogers described in his quote. "Whether we are a preschooler or a young teen, a graduating college senior or a retired person, we human beings all want to know that we are acceptable, that our being alive somehow makes a difference in the lives of others."

My focus is on positive transformations and addressing many issues and concerns like parenthood, marital difficulties, premarital counseling, anxiety, panic attacks, depression, behavior, trauma, PTSD, and other disturbances in family relationships.
Many people see therapy as a one-sided conversation with little opportunity for interaction. I can tell you that is not my approach. I believe that you can navigate the challenges and changes life could bring. I am committed to helping you on your journey through partnership, a team effort to achieve symptom reduction, more self-awareness, and increased confidence. I want you to be free of emotional pain and be able to deal with life’s mental stressors.

I specialize in working with teens & adults who struggle with anxiety, stress, depression, self-esteem, trauma, & family issues.
Helping the people-pleasers, worriers, and over-thinker's who want to feel valuable just as they are. When you constantly feel overwhelmed, and like you can’t get anything “right”, it’s so difficult to be at peace. You may overcompensate by focusing on work, achievement, or by being dependable to others. You may have difficulty setting boundaries. You feel stressed out, on edge, & unable to be your authentic self. This leads to anxiety and feeling like you’re never good enough. You may also have unresolved trauma. We can work together to help you find meaning, live your life with more ease, and meet your goals.

Family Therapy

What do family therapists do?

A family therapist facilitates the process of understanding and improving how a family functions. The therapist will help family members develop empathy for one another. They’ll seek to understand existing patterns, misunderstandings, and conflicts that arise, in order to help the family arrive at a realistic, unified understanding and develop the coping skills they need to build stronger relationships.

How long does therapy for families take to work?

Therapy manifests differently in every family; a common time frame is 12 weekly sessions, but some families may see improvement after just a few weeks. Families should discuss their goals with the therapist at the beginning of the process and periodically revisit those goals to assess their progress together.

How can you encourage a family member to attend family therapy?

You can encourage family members to attend therapy by expressing with both love and concern the challenges you see and explaining how a therapist could help the family navigate those challenges together. An outside perspective can help everyone feel heard, get on the same page, and develop new skills. If family members are still hesitant, it may be helpful to emphasize that family therapy is short-term—it won’t last forever.

Is therapy for families effective?

Family therapy can significantly improve family dynamics and relationships. Research suggests that family therapy can help individuals understand their role in the family, communicate and solve problems together, reduce conflict and draw boundaries when necessary, and develop coping skills for stressors, major life changes, and mental or physical illnesses within the family.
