I received a Master of Arts degree from the University of Louisiana at Monroe in Marriage and Family Therapy in 2014.
As changes and transitions happen, sometimes unexpectedly, we do the best we can to manage those interruptions when they occur. I would like to help each individual, couple, and family achieve the level of change they believe is necessary to improve, not only individually, but as they relate to others. I believe that sometimes we can become "stuck" during challenges and transitions, which may cause discomfort, but we possess the resiliency to move forward to live the life we desire.

I will make sure that you feel heard so you can be the person you want to be for yourself, your family and friends.
The first sign of a serious struggle is often the condition of our relationships with others. Becoming reactive in an automatic, negative way can lead to shame and broken bonds with friends, family, and co-workers. "Why am I like this," you may ask. Loneliness, depression and social anxiety? Maybe we feel misunderstood by what we can't find words for. "But I had a great childhood," you may say. Unintentional wounds can be caused by good people in bad situations, and you may have unexplored pain to heal. Family alcoholism, abuse, ADHD, and trauma can further complicate the lives of adolescents and adults alike damaging self-esteem.

Are you overwhelmed by worry and uncertainty and struggle with feeling at peace? Are you concerned that you will never experience happiness again because you have felt exhausted and depressed for so long? Do you feel that you and your partner are “just existing” and no longer share the connection you once had? If any of these questions are ones you can relate to, I want you to know that things can change.

In life things don’t always turn out the way we’d hoped. We didn’t get that degree we said we were going to get, marriage or relationships didn’t last, our loved ones passed away, and we just might feel stuck. How do we make sense of life again? How do we achieve our goals when they seem so out of reach? How do we create a happy life for ourselves.

Starting therapy is one of the hardest things one can do. When a person decides to begin therapy they are often at a point where they know something in their life needs to change, but are not sure where to begin. Departing from what is familiar can be scary. I understand how difficult making changes can be, and recognize how stressful it is to begin work with a new therapist.

Persons with addiction are valiant warriors pitted against a formidable foe. I have been privileged thru the years to come alongside the bravest of these people, wounded by denial, loss of family, wealth, health, even freedom. I have rejoiced with them in their victories and mourned with them in their defeats. I have worked with their families who bear similar losses and pain. I offer an non-judgmental approach to seeking the best solution for the individual and/or family members. Please call and allow me to assist you and your loved ones to take the first step to recovery.

I have struggled to overcome dependency and self-esteem issues from my family of origin.
I have a great deal of respect for my clients and believe the solution to their problems is well within their reach. In my early training, there was a great emphasis on listening. It's a skill I use in every session to figure out the next right step toward growth and development for my clients. Listening is a skill I teach, so my clients can have more effective and intimate relationships with others, not only personally but professionally as well. My job is to teach myself out of a job and give you skills to live a better life.

I believe my work with the Department of Children and Family Services will assist both children and their families, whether birth families or adoptive families.
Hi! My name is Sarah Desselles. I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker. As a young child, my desire/passion began to make a difference in the lives of others. Understanding human thought, behavior, and feelings. Helping someone become the best version of themselves. I enjoy interacting with people. I enjoy listening to their life stories, challenges, successes, etc. I meet people where they are, provide a listening ear, and have the ability to help them navigate. As a Licensed Clinical Social Worker, I want to make a visible difference in the life of people around me.

Proper treatment for the patient and information and support for the family is needed.
Life can be fun again! With support, understanding, education, and sometimes proper medication, you can turn your life around. If you find you're feeling bored, unmotivated, or you're having problems with focus and concentration; maybe you are easily frustrated and irritable, feeling lonely. Or maybe you find yourself lying and feeling guilty and remorseful, but repeating this behavior anyway. You're losing sight of who you really are! Are you using too much Alcohol and/or drugs to cope and can't quit? These are some of the symptoms of the disease of Addiction...and there is hope!

Family Therapy

What do family therapists do?

A family therapist facilitates the process of understanding and improving how a family functions. The therapist will help family members develop empathy for one another. They’ll seek to understand existing patterns, misunderstandings, and conflicts that arise, in order to help the family arrive at a realistic, unified understanding and develop the coping skills they need to build stronger relationships.

How long does therapy for families take to work?

Therapy manifests differently in every family; a common time frame is 12 weekly sessions, but some families may see improvement after just a few weeks. Families should discuss their goals with the therapist at the beginning of the process and periodically revisit those goals to assess their progress together.

How can you encourage a family member to attend family therapy?

You can encourage family members to attend therapy by expressing with both love and concern the challenges you see and explaining how a therapist could help the family navigate those challenges together. An outside perspective can help everyone feel heard, get on the same page, and develop new skills. If family members are still hesitant, it may be helpful to emphasize that family therapy is short-term—it won’t last forever.

Is therapy for families effective?

Family therapy can significantly improve family dynamics and relationships. Research suggests that family therapy can help individuals understand their role in the family, communicate and solve problems together, reduce conflict and draw boundaries when necessary, and develop coping skills for stressors, major life changes, and mental or physical illnesses within the family.
