Are you feeling “stuck,” unheard, and looking for someone who understands? Does your family not look like everyone else’s? If you answered yes to any of these questions, I am here to help. As a married gay man with six adopted children, I know that all families don’t look alike. I work with adults, children, families, and couples (marital and premarital) and those who struggle with parenting, foster parenting, bio-parent reunification, foster care trauma, anxiety, depression, trauma, OCD, marriage, and LGBTQ issues.

Asking for help can be difficult, and to ask for help for mental health reasons can be seem almost impossible. People worry about being judged, appearing to be weak, or fear of being vulnerable. However, counseling doesn’t have to be scary. It can be seen as an opportunity to work with someone who wants you to succeed in life, and be there through the tough times. Counseling can be an opportunity for someone positive to work with you to build hope and strength. I work hard to be this person when working with my clients, and look forward to the opportunities to help people achieve their goals.

At the Marriage Resource Center we know what makes marriage work. We focus on solutions instead of problems and build on what is right instead of analyzing what is wrong. I have over 20 years of counseling experience using research based principles that will help you rediscover joy in your marriage. Spouse won't come? These principles can be effective even when your spouse does not want to change. Starting in the first session we begin to develop a plan for positive changes.

The clients I most often work with are trying to manage changes in their lives as well as depression, anxiety, self-esteem and a variety of other mental health concerns. They have found that handling daily tasks, finding motivation, energy, and strength to handle life's challenges has become overwhelming. This can be due to current life stressors, or the manifestation of life events from the past. The focus in working together will be to identify your needs and goals, and implement changes and added insight to help you achieve these goals.

It’s no secret that life comes with struggles – or that those struggles can impact every part of a person’s life. No matter the age, gender, race, or overall walk of life, those struggles can interfere with one's mental, physical, and emotional wellbeing. The good news is that counseling can help with everything from childhood trauma to day-day life. With that in mind, Crossroads Counseling Services opened its doors in April 2007 with the mission of helping residents of Plainfield, Ottawa, Morris, and Yorkville, IL deal with and overcome these issues and trauma.

Are you looking for a safe place to be heard, relax and discover your potential within your life, family, and community systems? Do your choices incorporate your dreams and aspirations? Are they reflective of the realities and responsibiliteis that tug you and yours in directions that require better communication patterns, thought restructuring and balance? Do you sometimes struggle to give yourself and others the grace to grow, learn from the past and move forward with dignity? Consider coming in to talk and be heard, or sit quietly and let things settle while we get to know each other. Every day is a new opportunity.

Family Therapy

What do family therapists do?

A family therapist facilitates the process of understanding and improving how a family functions. The therapist will help family members develop empathy for one another. They’ll seek to understand existing patterns, misunderstandings, and conflicts that arise, in order to help the family arrive at a realistic, unified understanding and develop the coping skills they need to build stronger relationships.

How long does therapy for families take to work?

Therapy manifests differently in every family; a common time frame is 12 weekly sessions, but some families may see improvement after just a few weeks. Families should discuss their goals with the therapist at the beginning of the process and periodically revisit those goals to assess their progress together.

How can you encourage a family member to attend family therapy?

You can encourage family members to attend therapy by expressing with both love and concern the challenges you see and explaining how a therapist could help the family navigate those challenges together. An outside perspective can help everyone feel heard, get on the same page, and develop new skills. If family members are still hesitant, it may be helpful to emphasize that family therapy is short-term—it won’t last forever.

Is therapy for families effective?

Family therapy can significantly improve family dynamics and relationships. Research suggests that family therapy can help individuals understand their role in the family, communicate and solve problems together, reduce conflict and draw boundaries when necessary, and develop coping skills for stressors, major life changes, and mental or physical illnesses within the family.
