I work with a wide array of issues including, anxiety, depression, trauma, stress-related problems, grief and loss, cross-cultural issues, substance abuse, anger management, domestic violence, parenting, family and couples’ relationships, and life transitions.
People seek my professional help for a variety of reasons. Sometimes, something in their lives is just not right. They may wish to make specific changes or to understand themselves better. They may struggle with their relationships, have difficulties in their jobs or studies, and/or old traumas continue to negatively affect their present. Also, sometimes they just don’t know what to do with their inner voice that is too critical and sabotages their lives. Therapy or counseling is not always about making big changes or exploring past issues. It can be used to simply have a place to check-in and stay attuned with themselves.

I am a caring, knowledgeable, and well-trained therapist who truly enjoys working with clients. If you are willing to partner we can achieve the results you are looking for. I am educated in the following treatment modalities: individual, couple, and family therapy. I am also certified to treat both substance and process addictions. Although trying to achieve full-time 'happiness' may be a fool's errand, I do believe that finding peace, contentment and well-being with self is the cornerstone for a life that can be both satisfying and robust.

I may also provide education about the divorce process and its impact on the couple and their family.
Should you stay or should you go? No other question carries this much weight; it's almost suffocating. The pain of things remaining the same is just too much. But, the risks associated with making massive changes also paralyze you. I get it. There are reasons to work on the relationship, and there are reasons to close the door behind you. You've built a life together: kids, careers, investments. Life isn't so simple to end it all right now; life is complicated. You want confidence that the choice you're making is the right one for you and your family. After all, divorce is permanent. It's worth weighing your options.

While I rely on my two masters degrees in Marriage/ Family Therapy and Mental Health counseling, it is secondary to the training that life, curiosity, empathy & instinct have brought me.
Are you carrying emotional scars that have been ignored for too long, leaving you feeling numb? Do you struggle to fully engage in a life that should bring you joy, but instead leaves you unsatisfied? Are you burdened by guilt for missing out on precious moments as a result? Do you find yourself consumed by overthinking? Sometimes all night long? Do you feel emotionally disconnected from your partner? Do you carry anger and resentment that feel overwhelming? Do you prioritize everyone else's needs over your own, leaving you feeling insignificant? Do you feel lost? I have six words for you: The only way out is through.

Are you more critical of yourself than you are of anyone else? It's hard to feel fulfilled in your work and relationships if you are beating yourself up inside. When you begin to take a more gentle stance towards yourself, it's amazing how much energy you can free up. I use mindfulness and IFS (Internal Family Systems) strategies to help clients do deep and meaningful work in sessions. "I learned a long time ago the wisest thing I can do is be on my own side..." quote by Maya Angelou. When you begin to truly understand and be kind to yourself, you will find more joy and notice positive changes in many aspects of your life.

Establish healthier boundaries with coworkers, family, and friends.
You've been taking care of others for as long as you can remember. You’ve always sacrificed your own well-being to help those around you. A friend broke up with her partner, so you’re the shoulder to cry on. There was a problem with a client at work, so you fixed it. Your husband and kids rely on you for everything from getting dressed to eating meals. “As long as everyone else is happy,” you tell yourself, “Then I’m fine.” But you’re not fine. You’ve completely lost touch with yourself and don’t have the time or energy to find your way back. You’re filled with guilt whenever you try to take a moment for yourself. It feels hopeless.

I use psycho-education to help clients work on their interpersonal relationships with partners, friends or family members through strengthening their communication style.
As the newest member to our team, Barbara enjoys working with couples and on inspiring women to overcome codependency. She has dedicated countless hours in researching evidence based techniques to either help couples overcome difficult situations such as infidelity, or to empower women in believing that they CAN overcome, succeed and be happy without needing to be involved in a relationship. She reminds you that you CHOOSE to be in a relationship and you don't NEED to be involved with someone else.

My strength as a professional psychologist is being a good therapist. It is how I feel about what I am and what I do, helping others grow and helping myself be a better person, which makes me love this profession every day. Understanding without judging, attacking, and understanding what the other is saying and feeling is the center of my practice, and together, I find a way out better each day the client comes to me; that's my goal every day to do better and better.

Family Therapy

What do family therapists do?

A family therapist facilitates the process of understanding and improving how a family functions. The therapist will help family members develop empathy for one another. They’ll seek to understand existing patterns, misunderstandings, and conflicts that arise, in order to help the family arrive at a realistic, unified understanding and develop the coping skills they need to build stronger relationships.

How long does therapy for families take to work?

Therapy manifests differently in every family; a common time frame is 12 weekly sessions, but some families may see improvement after just a few weeks. Families should discuss their goals with the therapist at the beginning of the process and periodically revisit those goals to assess their progress together.

How can you encourage a family member to attend family therapy?

You can encourage family members to attend therapy by expressing with both love and concern the challenges you see and explaining how a therapist could help the family navigate those challenges together. An outside perspective can help everyone feel heard, get on the same page, and develop new skills. If family members are still hesitant, it may be helpful to emphasize that family therapy is short-term—it won’t last forever.

Is therapy for families effective?

Family therapy can significantly improve family dynamics and relationships. Research suggests that family therapy can help individuals understand their role in the family, communicate and solve problems together, reduce conflict and draw boundaries when necessary, and develop coping skills for stressors, major life changes, and mental or physical illnesses within the family.
