Micheal Kane brings an empathetic, understanding, and supportive approach to individual, couples, and family therapy that specializes in the unique challenges that face people of color, the LGBTQ+ community, and veterans.
Emotional pain distorts our view of the world. The longer our pain lasts, the more unhappy we become. Unlike a well meaning friend or relative, a therapist can consider your concerns from a fresh, objective, perspective. But a therapist will not solve your problems for you; he will guide you by listening, questioning and observing—- so that you can find your own answers when extreme unhappiness, overwhelming anxiety or fear, feelings of inadequacy and low self esteem, sexual problems, and traumatic events interfere with your life or relationships with others.

As a child and family therapist, I am here to help you in these difficult times.
I enjoy helping children learn to self regulate and express their feelings and experiences through play and the therapeutic relationship. Children in my office will be given a safe space to be themselves and express all the parts of themselves that they bring in the room. I will work with parents on linking goals with growth and attunement for their child. Together we will collaborate on the best way to help your child heal in the areas that they are struggling to process and understand better.

It can be hard to effectively navigate stressors related to work, home, family, or peers.
I work with individuals, families, and those in intimate partnerships who are experiencing distress in their relationships with one another and/or their peers, work, and community. I use goal oriented and solution focused approaches to help clients manage symptoms of anxiety, depression, behavioral challenges, and problems with communication. I am using my many years working with families in crisis to help clients manage the current circumstances, including feelings of isolation, financial hardship, anxiety, panic, sadness, low motivation, managing work at home with children, and balancing autonomy with togetherness.

I look forward to meeting you, whatever your age, ability, gender, sexual orientation, ethnic, cultural, religious background, or family structure is.
Experiencing anxiety is a normal part of life, but sometimes it can start taking over your life, and this is when therapy can help. Sometimes it is hard to know what to do, or hard to do what we want when we are overwhelmed by certain fears, feelings or ideas. This too is when therapy can help. Whether you or your child is experiencing anxiety that is causing distress and limiting life, I would love to work with you. I believe therapy is a collaborative process, which will be driven by your needs, desires, and motivations.

I use a variety of techniques in my practice, but focus on somatic therapy, experiential therapy, positive psychology, and internal family systems.
Counseling with me is not just “talking about problems” but looking at all of you and identifying how to help you feel more alive. I called my practice OpenHand Counseling as I believe almost anything worthwhile in life requires us to trust, collaborate, and extend ourselves. It's hard to hold a tool, cook a meal, garden, write, play a sport, give affection to another or a pet, or do almost anything without opening my fingers to meet the world. Whether you are processing past events, working towards achieving goals and plans for your life, or just need additional support, let’s work together to get you where you want to go.

Let's work together to build the family life you want.
You’ve already tried the parenting tools you know, and the strategies you learned from a class or a book aren't working. I help parents use connection rather than control to create the relationship they want with their kids. Your children's anxiety diminishes and their behavior improves as they feel your warm connection. Enjoy more peace in your home, and more confidence as you shape your family culture. Together, we work to help you build confidence in your parenting and add playfulness and laughter back into your home. Get the support you deserve, and fill your own tank in the process.

I have specific experience and training in addressing anxiety disorders, complex trauma/PTSD, grief and loss, parenthood/single parent families, family conflict, and queer identity.
Being alive in a complex and unknown world is difficult, as humans we are daily managing our emotions, instincts, desires, frustrations, confusions, and joys. This is no simple task, and difficult to do alone. That is where the work of psychotherapy comes in to provide a path forward. By creating a space of acceptance, presence, and honesty together we can move towards building more security and freedom to live and enjoy life.

Family Therapy

What do family therapists do?

A family therapist facilitates the process of understanding and improving how a family functions. The therapist will help family members develop empathy for one another. They’ll seek to understand existing patterns, misunderstandings, and conflicts that arise, in order to help the family arrive at a realistic, unified understanding and develop the coping skills they need to build stronger relationships.

How long does therapy for families take to work?

Therapy manifests differently in every family; a common time frame is 12 weekly sessions, but some families may see improvement after just a few weeks. Families should discuss their goals with the therapist at the beginning of the process and periodically revisit those goals to assess their progress together.

How can you encourage a family member to attend family therapy?

You can encourage family members to attend therapy by expressing with both love and concern the challenges you see and explaining how a therapist could help the family navigate those challenges together. An outside perspective can help everyone feel heard, get on the same page, and develop new skills. If family members are still hesitant, it may be helpful to emphasize that family therapy is short-term—it won’t last forever.

Is therapy for families effective?

Family therapy can significantly improve family dynamics and relationships. Research suggests that family therapy can help individuals understand their role in the family, communicate and solve problems together, reduce conflict and draw boundaries when necessary, and develop coping skills for stressors, major life changes, and mental or physical illnesses within the family.
