Navigating life isn't as easy as it looks sometimes. Depression, anxiety, and abuse are more common than people think. Family issues, partner issues, sudden behavioral changes, unexpected life adjustments, they all can have an impact on how we perceive life. Our perception often becomes our reality and sometimes our reality feels stuck. Rewriting your story can be a release from the past as much as writing a new chapter in life can be the change people seek. You have strengths to use against your limitations and parts of yourself that need attending.

I earned my Bachelor of Science Degree from Utah Valley University in Behavioral Science with an emphasis in Family Studies and completed a master’s in social work with Boise State University.
I believe the power to heal and understand is within our reach, sometimes we just need a reminder of our potential. I have experience working with all ages from school age to adult. I believe in empowering others by helping them gain confidence in themselves through knowledge and skill building so they have the power and courage to conquer their challenges.

As a specialist in child/family issues, I can teach your child or teen the tools they need to feel more confident in life.
You've started to question your religious upbringing, and notice increased feelings of worry, panic, and feel unsure how to move forward. Perhaps your partner is undergoing a shift in their value system, and it's creating tension in the relationship. You feel like you're walking on eggshells when you try to talk about it, and you don't know how to find common ground. Everything you've thought about how life was going to work is suddenly turned upside down. I know how to help couples navigate changes in belief systems while creating ongoing connection. I have helped individuals navigate value shifts too!

I'm a marriage and family therapist, and I also love to work with individuals who need someone to champion their change efforts.
You want kind, upbeat support as you work through your most difficult life challenges. I'm here to give you practical recommendations about what you can do to improve your situation today. The most important predictors of therapy outcome are the relationship you have with your therapist, the "fit" between us, feeling hopeful that things can change, and being given the right tools to start the change process. My job is to make sure all of that happens for you so you can start feeling better.

Marriage and Family therapists are highly trained to improve relationships and sometimes will include family members in the healing process.
How can we have more peace, resiliency, and deeper connection in our relationships? How do we reduce anxiety, depression, harmful or addictive behaviors? We often wonder how or if it is even possible to change life-long patterns that have limited our potential and growth. Research indicates (as well as my personal and professional experience) two, very powerful approaches to change and healing that provide long-term results: the spiritual Recovery model and Emotionally-Focused therapy. Both approaches, coupled with an honest willingness to change, and an experienced therapist, hits the "bullseye" on the target for effective change!

Teens: I didn’t start working with teens, it sort of happened organically. Now, several years later, I just had the mother of one of my clients tell me she waited several months to get her kid into “The Teen Whisperer”. I had to laugh as that was the first time I had heard that. My wife and I have a blended family with 8 kids. I LOVE working with teens and helping them achieve their ultimate potential. Teens are open to new ideas, new ways of thinking, and they are very curious. Let me help your teen get on the right track! I work with teens with depression, anxiety, struggling with grades and social challenges.

I have been working as a Marriage & Family Therapist for over a decade now, and it has truly been the privilege of a lifetime! I believe my clients have everything they need within themselves to heal, find meaning, and thrive, but we all need support, connection, and collaboration to grow perspective and make lasting changes. I see individuals, couples, and family relationships, ranging from adolescence through adulthood. I work from several approaches and do my best to tailor therapy to my clients’ personalities, temperaments, and functional abilities.

As a Marriage and Family Therapist, I am trained to work with individuals, couples, and families.
As a therapist, I feel honored to join my clients on their journey of healing as they are reminded of their strengths and learn new skills to overcome their challenges. I understand the importance of building trust with my clients, respecting their stories without judgment, and creating a safe space for them to be open and vulnerable. I find joy in helping my clients better understand themselves and their past and present relationships, let go of negative core beliefs and patterns that are no longer serving them, and ultimately believe that they are enough.

Along with talk therapy, I use two bottom-up approaches, Accelerated Resolution Therapy and Internal Family Systems (parts work).
In life, we often feel overwhelmed, depleted, and in need of support. Maybe it is a struggle with anxiety or depression, a negative belief, an addiction or perhaps you have been hit by a marital betrayal or loss of connection. No matter the cause, therapy can be a means to hope and healing. According to Dr. Peter Levine, “Trauma is perhaps the most avoided, ignored, belittled, denied, misunderstood, and untreated cause of human suffering”. He describes trauma as “anything that is too much or comes too fast” or is hard on your body physically or emotionally. I believe we all have the ability to heal, grow, and transform.

Whether you're struggling to feel confident in school, work, romance, friendships or with family, I am confident that you can find your confidence.
Do you find that you are especially hard on yourself? You've done everything you know how to have a satisfying life, but can't seem to feel confident with what you have going for you. Perhaps you've been in a relationship where you felt it was wrong to have wants and needs. Or maybe you fear that someone will discover you as a fraud at work. Perhaps your parents understand you about as well as most understand Latin. In any case, it scares the pants off of you to think about standing up for yourself. You are certainly not alone in the struggle.

Family Therapy

What do family therapists do?

A family therapist facilitates the process of understanding and improving how a family functions. The therapist will help family members develop empathy for one another. They’ll seek to understand existing patterns, misunderstandings, and conflicts that arise, in order to help the family arrive at a realistic, unified understanding and develop the coping skills they need to build stronger relationships.

How long does therapy for families take to work?

Therapy manifests differently in every family; a common time frame is 12 weekly sessions, but some families may see improvement after just a few weeks. Families should discuss their goals with the therapist at the beginning of the process and periodically revisit those goals to assess their progress together.

How can you encourage a family member to attend family therapy?

You can encourage family members to attend therapy by expressing with both love and concern the challenges you see and explaining how a therapist could help the family navigate those challenges together. An outside perspective can help everyone feel heard, get on the same page, and develop new skills. If family members are still hesitant, it may be helpful to emphasize that family therapy is short-term—it won’t last forever.

Is therapy for families effective?

Family therapy can significantly improve family dynamics and relationships. Research suggests that family therapy can help individuals understand their role in the family, communicate and solve problems together, reduce conflict and draw boundaries when necessary, and develop coping skills for stressors, major life changes, and mental or physical illnesses within the family.
