With nearly 15 years of experience working with adults and couples, my clients regain a sense of control and contentment through the use of evidence based practices like CBT, Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy, Mindfulness and EMDR.
Often times we find reasons to devalue our own needs because acknowledging pain is hard. I encourage you to take this moment to put your happiness and well-being first. People reach out to me when they feel less in control of their lives. When stressful changes in life leave them feeling restless at night; they aren't able to turn off their mind. They often feel on edge, as if they might cry or lose their cool at any moment. It becomes difficult to feel joy from their usual pleasures. When clients sit down with me they want to regain a sense of normalcy and peace.

Hi, I'm Kitt! I'm the owner of Defiant Therapy, LLC, a practice that offers an affirming space for you to embrace "defiance" - a sense of trust in yourself that leads you to challenge expectations. I value creating space where you can discover your expansiveness, care for the parts of yourself that need tenderness and fierce compassion, and get clear about the change you need and the acceptance you deserve. I work with individuals (adults and adolescents), relationships of two or more, and families who want and need this radical space.

My practice offers a safe, warm, & non-judgmental environment for patients to open up their minds and become the best they can be. I use a strength's based approach to start by acknowledging what each patient does well; we build on that to address areas s/he is struggling in and establish goals to work towards. I use a variety of therapeutic modalities to help each patient get the individualized approach s/he needs to be successful.

Welcome! I specialize in working with adults who experience persistent anxiety, relationship concerns, trauma, family conflict, multicultural issues, and difficulty around life transitions. More specifically, I support clients with challenges around mood, assertiveness, self-esteem, boundary-setting, “people pleasing”, frequent guilt, neglect, or just not feeling good enough. I work especially well with those who have experienced unhealthy relationship dynamics, such as emotional abuse or manipulation. My background as a first-generation Greek-American has also contributed to my knowledge of and interest in cross-cultural concerns.

Hi, I'm Andie. I've helped people with their mental health recovery since the late 1980s. People have come to me feeling overwhelmed with challenging life circumstances or transitions. Some struggled to manage sadness, fear, ruminating thoughts, trauma, identity issues, relationship conflicts, unhealthy habits and more. Have you suffered in silence? Did you turn to others for support but they were too busy? Do they make suggestions without really hearing and acknowledging your feelings? Understanding and replacing ineffective patterns of thought/behavior takes time; it can be less overwhelming with guidance from a therapist.

I have been working with children, adolescents, young adults, adults, and family for more than 20 years, in various, clinical, non-clinical settings; with transitional issues, adjustment issues, self esteem, emotional distress, behavioral issues, ADHD, grief, among others. I use an eclectic approach, and use ACT, Mindfulness, CBT, BT, Play Therapy, Client Centered, and Brief Solution Focused among others. I have been working with the belief that a healthy, balanced state of being is an acquired skill, and that every individual has sufficient inner strengths to be reminded/to be uncovered.

My ideal client is willing to explore their emotions and experiences in a supportive environment. They might be dealing with anxiety, depression, self-esteem problems, or the aftermath of trauma. These clients need a safe space to express themselves, receive active listening, and develop effective coping strategies. For those who have experienced trauma, my approach is tailored to their unique needs. I prioritize creating a trusting relationship where clients feel secure enough to share their experiences. Using TFCBT interventions, I help them process and integrate their experiences to reduce distress and promote healing.

How we respond or react to people, places or things both personally and professionally, can be traced back to our past, past hurts, past experiences, past trauma, etc., they are also indicators of whether we are surviving or thriving. The unhealed parts of our past, impact our ability to respond while thriving, causing reactions in order to survive, how are your unhealed parts showing up? In 2018, I graduated with a Master of Social Work degree concentrating in Public Health, from Morgan State University in Baltimore Maryland. As a Licensed Certified Social Worker-Clinical (LCSW-C), I have been in private practice for 4 years now.

Emotionally Focused Therapists

Who is emotionally focused therapy for?

Emotionally focused therapy (EFT) is for couples who are emotionally distressed, stuck in an unsatisfying relationship pattern or feeling deeply alienated. They may even believe the relationship is beyond repair. Very often, the partners display intense anger, fear, grief, loss of trust, or a sense of betrayal in the relationship. In addition, EFT is helpful to couples and individuals who have difficulty expressing emotions and those who have trouble regulating emotions.

Why do people need emotionally focused therapy?

People need emotionally focused therapy because the need for others is built into the brain, but the pressures of daily life can erode feelings of love, and couples often do not have the skills to find their way back to the comfort of each other. Instead, they may be stuck in repetitive patterns of anger, fear, grief, loss of trust, or a sense of betrayal. Emotionally focused therapy regards such strong negative feelings as expressions of protest over the loss of connection and turns them into pathways of reconnection.

What happens in emotionally focused therapy?

Over the course of eight to 20 weekly sessions, couples de-escalate their negative emotional reactivity to one another so that they can listen to each other and be responsive to each other’s needs. Then the deep emotional and physical bond is restored, giving partners a sense of comfort and security, which they can use to solve whatever problems come their way. The therapist plays an active role, helping partners understand how anger and withdrawal are actually misguided cries for connection.

What problems does emotionally focused therapy treat?

EFT is designed to help couples stuck in dysfunctional relationship patterns regain closeness and rebuild their relationship. Typically, such couples experience considerable distress, with partners feeling alienated and distrustful of one another, not certain their relationship can survive. EFT is also helpful to individuals experiencing attachment-related fears of loss; it helps them learn to use their fears as a way of eliciting the closeness they desire.
