We can use EMDR to address trauma, anxiety or nervous system dysregulation.
Come As You Are Clinical Therapy is a boutique private practice specializing in Generalized Anxiety, Social Anxiety, Trauma and Transitions. Do you have difficulty controlling worry? Racing thoughts? When the nervous system 'gets stuck' it can trigger anxiety, avoidance, dissociation, dysregulation or anger. You may shutdown. You may be constantly on the go and unable to relax. You may have the urge to put the needs of others before your own needs. You may have trouble setting boundaries. You may over-use substances, food or social media. You may feel burnt out and struggle to live authentically in harmony with your core values.

Certified EMDR therapist helping heal from trauma, and making life better! Life doesn't always make things feel easy. Keeping up with your career, your health, and that appearance of having it all together; phew, its a lot. Add on running away from impacts of prior experiences, trauma, or negative core beliefs such as “I’m not good enough”, “I’m too much”, or other feelings you keep yourself busy to avoid- and just like that, you’re left feeling empty, unfulfilled, and with questions like “why am I not happy”, “Is this as good as it gets?” Adulting can leave you feeling exhausted, depleted, frustrated and sometimes even defeated.

Life rarely goes as planned. When you've been hit with a major life event, such as the loss of a loved one, an affair, or the birth of a child, you may experience fear, isolation, sadness, or anger. Although life changes can be a source of excitement and growth, they often bring up unresolved issues, including perfectionism, shame, and past trauma. If you want to be able to cope effectively with life's biggest transitions, you need a compassionate therapist who specializes in your area of need, so that you can find peace and joy in your life again.

As an EMDR and trauma therapist I believe that we all respond differently to stressors, whether they take us by surprise or whether we see them coming.
You didn’t expect life to look like this. You feel overwhelmed, disillusioned, or like your life is never going to change. You feel disconnected from your friends, family, and maybe even yourself. But you don’t want to live your life this way anymore. You’re no longer happy with the status quo. Most of all, you’re ready to feel free and regain control of your life. Therapy can help you manage the stress in your life and create the life you want, whatever that may look like.

EMDR Therapists

Who is EMDR for?

EMDR was initially developed as a treatment for individuals with Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), for whom memories of a deeply distressing experience can be inadvertently triggered by random everyday events. The procedure has since been applied in the treatment of many other conditions. For example, it is used by some therapists to treat anxiety disorders including panic and phobias, depression, dissociative disorders, eating disorders, obsessive-compulsive disorders, and some personality disorders. It is suitable for adolescents and adults.

Why do people need EMDR?

People need EMDR as a way to manage distressing memories that in some way hamper the ability to function in the present. The procedure is believed to target the way memories are stored in the brain. Evidence indicates that past disturbing experiences cause ongoing distress because they were not adequately processed, and when such memories are triggered in the present, they are accompanied by all the emotions, thoughts, and physical sensations as the initial experience.

What problems does EMDR treat?

First and foremost, EMDR is intended as a treatment for PTSD, to defuse distressing memories that intrude on and impair everyday functioning. It is also often used to help those who are subject to panic attacks, phobias, and other forms of anxiety. In addition, EMDR has been used to treat individuals with depression, eating disorders, and personality disorders.

What happens in EMDR therapy?

First the therapist takes an individual’s history, and then the therapist and client decide which distressing experience(s) will be the target(s) of the exercise, delivered via a side-to-side visual stimulus requiring lateral eye movements. The client will be asked to activate thoughts, feelings, and any body sensations related to the troubling experience. The eye movements are said to reduce the emotional charge of the memory, so that the experience can then be safely discussed with the therapist and digested, minimizing its ability to trigger anxiety.
