I am a trauma-informed professional with training in both talk therapy and EMDR.
For many of us who have felt different, including those in the LGBTQIA+, we live with the collective trauma of existing in a system that isn’t built for us to thrive as our authentic selves. My hope is that through our collaboration we will be able to explore and identify the experiences and traumas that have led you to seek therapy services, understand how these problem areas don’t impact what is the most obvious, but also understand that sometimes these problems go much deeper, and lastly work through the things we discover to help you push through the discomfort to empower you to live authentically

I have completed training and have experience in various forms of therapy including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Ego State Therapy, Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing ( EMDR) Therapy and more; I utilize material from the Hope Restored Marriage Intensive Program provided by Focus on the Family, The Gottman Institute, and more.
My goal in working with clients is to provide support, compassion, and accountability as well as to offer resources and tools to empower individuals, increase their confidence, and further begin to identify and make progress in achieving their goals. I believe that treatment should not be conducted as a one size fits all approach; instead I desire to work in collaboration with clients to identify and progress in achievement of client specific goals through therapeutic interventions utilizing evidence based treatment and therapeutic modalities.

Are you struggling to make life work? Perhaps stuck in an addiction or habit that you can't seem to break. Are you struggling relationally? Do you wonder where God is in the midst of all your upset? No matter where life has taken you, there is hope for a brighter future. Life truly is amazing if you are willing to do the necessary footwork...and promise not to quit when the going gets tough. Healing can be a painful process but there is nothing like living in the freedom that comes as a result.

I believe that clients have within themselves an amazing ability to self-heal, and the role of the counselor is to find and tap into that ability. I also believe it is important to learn about each client's world and to develop a relationship where clients can feel understood and supported while learning about themselves. This creates the space for exploring the choices they have and any changes they may want to make toward more personal fulfillment. Therapy for children may involve consultation with parents who need support meeting their child's challenges. Play therapy is used with children.

Note: I am currently accepting new individual clients (adolescents/teens/adults). I have a waiting list for couples presently. Hey there! On the surface, things look good, but your anxiety has been driving your car for a while now. Stressors and responsibilities keep stacking up and you are overwhelmed and feeling stuck. You have spent your life people-pleasing and you’ve forgotten who you are and what you need/want. You believe that even if you knew what you needed, you are unsure how to move forward. You've been searching for balance and peace for a while now though and are ready to take the first step in finding it.

I believe Irvin Yalom said it best when he said we need to form a unique therapy for every person. We are all unique, our relationships and experiences are unique, and in therapy we need to find your own path forward in life. We can find that as a conversation between two experts, you being the expert in your own life, and me being an expert in this field. Together, we can work to help you find what you are looking for in therapy. Whether it is a skill and action motivated plan, or a space to emotionally process things regularly, or anything in between.

As a therapist, I believe that change happens in therapy when there is an authentic relationship that yields a safe place for people to explore and address their feelings in a non-judgmental and comfortable way. I feel I am gifted in building true connections through empathy. In my practice, I meet people where they are in life & work to ensure that client's feel valued and empowered in the therapy process. God designs people beautifully & individually. It is my desire to help each of my clients explore that within themselves and to discover the true joy that comes when we can see life in this light.

I view therapy through a person-centered lens, while using interventions from Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and EMDR, with a trauma-informed approach.
I thoroughly enjoy helping clients to be authentically themselves within a safe and comfortable space. Each person is unique in their own way, and because of this they may need a unique approach in therapy. I look at the therapeutic relationship as a team, we can collaborate together to work on any issues that may be troublesome. Transparency is an important part of the therapeutic relationship, and I encourage it on both sides in order to create a non-judgmental space.

I utilize a variety of modalities when working with clients including Trauma Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT) and EMDR.
Hello, my name is Amy Harbison. I am a licensed clinical social worker who specializes in childhood trauma and family counseling. If you or your loved one is experiencing distress in their relationships or if past traumatic experiences are stealing your joy, I would be honored to walk alongside you in your healing journey. The desire to see strong families and healthy relationships are two of the primary reasons I chose to pursue a career in clinical social work. The parent child relationship is the first one in which we learn who we are to others and where our sense of value and worth begins to form.

EMDR Therapists

Who is EMDR for?

EMDR was initially developed as a treatment for individuals with Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), for whom memories of a deeply distressing experience can be inadvertently triggered by random everyday events. The procedure has since been applied in the treatment of many other conditions. For example, it is used by some therapists to treat anxiety disorders including panic and phobias, depression, dissociative disorders, eating disorders, obsessive-compulsive disorders, and some personality disorders. It is suitable for adolescents and adults.

Why do people need EMDR?

People need EMDR as a way to manage distressing memories that in some way hamper the ability to function in the present. The procedure is believed to target the way memories are stored in the brain. Evidence indicates that past disturbing experiences cause ongoing distress because they were not adequately processed, and when such memories are triggered in the present, they are accompanied by all the emotions, thoughts, and physical sensations as the initial experience.

What problems does EMDR treat?

First and foremost, EMDR is intended as a treatment for PTSD, to defuse distressing memories that intrude on and impair everyday functioning. It is also often used to help those who are subject to panic attacks, phobias, and other forms of anxiety. In addition, EMDR has been used to treat individuals with depression, eating disorders, and personality disorders.

What happens in EMDR therapy?

First the therapist takes an individual’s history, and then the therapist and client decide which distressing experience(s) will be the target(s) of the exercise, delivered via a side-to-side visual stimulus requiring lateral eye movements. The client will be asked to activate thoughts, feelings, and any body sensations related to the troubling experience. The eye movements are said to reduce the emotional charge of the memory, so that the experience can then be safely discussed with the therapist and digested, minimizing its ability to trigger anxiety.
