Welcome, my name is Erika! My work focuses on providing culturally responsive, anti-oppressive, and affirming therapeutic services to BIPOC and LGBTQ+ folks experiencing anxiety, depression, generational trauma, immigrant struggles, and race/ethnic identity exploration. I work from a trauma-informed lens that explores childhood experiences, relational attachments, cultural environments, and how the brain/body is developmentally affected through traumatic experiences. I integrate somatic approaches such as EMDR, parts work, DBT, the Neurosequential Model of Therapeutics (NMT) and mindfulness to address and process trauma.

We can process those memories so they are no longer disturbing using an evidence based treatment called Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) therapy.
Do you feel like you're stuck no matter how hard you try to move forward? Our brains can leave us feeling like we are at the mercy of our past. When disturbing or traumatizing events happen, those events can become locked in our nervous system as if we are frozen in time with all same uncomfortable feelings. People, situations, or events can subconsciously trigger those stuck memories leaving you feeling anxious, paranoid, irritable, depressed, or otherwise fearful without an obvious cause. Together we can heal your trauma and allow you to move on from your pain.

You want to feel emotions fully without shame. You want to be connected to your own sense of desire and purpose. You deserve a space to explore the parts of you that feel unknown, “unacceptable,” or taboo. My commitment in the therapeutic relationship is to welcome and value all aspects of your experience – the stories that reflect humor and resilience, and the parts that have been shamed or dismissed. I combine EMDR trauma processing, somatic approaches, and discussions about how systems of oppression shape what we believe about ourselves to help clients express emotion and explore new patterns and identities.

I utilize a mix of reality, symptom-focused treatment and existential therapy alongside experiential therapies that include: EMDR, Brainspotting, Mindfulness and Meditation.
I am a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) specializing in Complex Trauma, Athletics-Focused Counseling, and Alcohol and Drug use. I enjoy working with adolescents, adults, and athletic populations using a collaborative approach that fosters a safe and supportive therapeutic environment. My goal is to work together with you to help navigate your life’s journey. If you have ever felt blocked or unreasonably triggered, have had flashbacks to unpleasant moments in your life, or are unreasonably afraid of the future, we can work towards more adaptive responses to otherwise detrimental, "freezing" moments.

I work with individuals, couples, and families challenged by anxiety, depression, loss, trauma, addiction and the changes of everyday life. While grounded in traditional psychodynamic psychotherapy, I also integrate interpersonal neurobiology and body-based therapies, including Neuroaffective Relational Model (NARM) for developmental trauma, Somatic Experiencing and EMDR. Often, insight alone is not enough to shift patterns we find ourselves stuck in and repeating in ourselves and our relationships.

EMDR Therapists

Who is EMDR for?

EMDR was initially developed as a treatment for individuals with Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), for whom memories of a deeply distressing experience can be inadvertently triggered by random everyday events. The procedure has since been applied in the treatment of many other conditions. For example, it is used by some therapists to treat anxiety disorders including panic and phobias, depression, dissociative disorders, eating disorders, obsessive-compulsive disorders, and some personality disorders. It is suitable for adolescents and adults.

Why do people need EMDR?

People need EMDR as a way to manage distressing memories that in some way hamper the ability to function in the present. The procedure is believed to target the way memories are stored in the brain. Evidence indicates that past disturbing experiences cause ongoing distress because they were not adequately processed, and when such memories are triggered in the present, they are accompanied by all the emotions, thoughts, and physical sensations as the initial experience.

What problems does EMDR treat?

First and foremost, EMDR is intended as a treatment for PTSD, to defuse distressing memories that intrude on and impair everyday functioning. It is also often used to help those who are subject to panic attacks, phobias, and other forms of anxiety. In addition, EMDR has been used to treat individuals with depression, eating disorders, and personality disorders.

What happens in EMDR therapy?

First the therapist takes an individual’s history, and then the therapist and client decide which distressing experience(s) will be the target(s) of the exercise, delivered via a side-to-side visual stimulus requiring lateral eye movements. The client will be asked to activate thoughts, feelings, and any body sensations related to the troubling experience. The eye movements are said to reduce the emotional charge of the memory, so that the experience can then be safely discussed with the therapist and digested, minimizing its ability to trigger anxiety.
