EMDR can be particularly helpful for this.
I received my master’s degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling in 2017. My clinical work has centered around survivors of trauma, including working with survivors of traumatic brain injuries for much of my career. I have worked in a variety of mental health care settings, including community care and inpatient acute care. I have a passion for mental health education and advocacy through those experiences. In session, I work with clients as a collaborator to support their growth on an individual basis. I have a special interest in the mind-body connection. In therapy sessions I utilize EMDR and other eclectic techniques.

I am also trained in Eye Movement Desensitization & Reprocessing ( EMDR) and Brainspotting to help my clients process their trauma, identify negative core beliefs, and enhance the client’s strengths in the process.
Our world is a broken one filled with broken people, and oftentimes those broken people hurt one another. We are designed for connection with one another, and sometimes those connections go awry and create emotional dysfunction or trauma. That dysfunction and trauma often results in maladaptive means of protecting ourselves and coping with our feelings. This can manifest itself through substance abuse/addiction, dysfunctional relationships, depression, anxiety, and other issues. Are you feeling weighed down by any of these issues? Does any of this ring true to you? I hope to provide the compassionate support needed to recover.

I am trained in EMDR, which is used to treat trauma.
We all face difficult experiences that can seem unmanageable. You may be struggling with anxiety or depression or with old or new trauma. Perhaps your closest relationships have become a source of stress instead of a source of comfort. Maybe you are experiencing grief and loss. Going through these experiences results in a decline in your general well-being and happiness. My approach offers an in-depth understanding of your struggles to make long lasting changes in your life and relationships.

I utilize a unique combination of trauma informed therapies that focus on how the body processes painful experiences ( EMDR, Brainspotting, Somatic Practice, Parts Work, and experiential activities).
Therapy is a journey into self-awareness. My private practice, Birmingham Therapy Services LLC, focuses on addressing presenting symptoms that can be a manifestation of our past and current experiences. Creating a safe environment is fundamental to therapeutic success. My role is to help the client identify what skills are needed in order for them to feel safe; this includes gathering an understanding of past and present experiences, resource building, coping skills development, psychoeducation, and discovering ones strengths. This approach is key in preparing a client's nervous system for the deep dive work.

EMDR Therapists

Who is EMDR for?

EMDR was initially developed as a treatment for individuals with Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), for whom memories of a deeply distressing experience can be inadvertently triggered by random everyday events. The procedure has since been applied in the treatment of many other conditions. For example, it is used by some therapists to treat anxiety disorders including panic and phobias, depression, dissociative disorders, eating disorders, obsessive-compulsive disorders, and some personality disorders. It is suitable for adolescents and adults.

Why do people need EMDR?

People need EMDR as a way to manage distressing memories that in some way hamper the ability to function in the present. The procedure is believed to target the way memories are stored in the brain. Evidence indicates that past disturbing experiences cause ongoing distress because they were not adequately processed, and when such memories are triggered in the present, they are accompanied by all the emotions, thoughts, and physical sensations as the initial experience.

What problems does EMDR treat?

First and foremost, EMDR is intended as a treatment for PTSD, to defuse distressing memories that intrude on and impair everyday functioning. It is also often used to help those who are subject to panic attacks, phobias, and other forms of anxiety. In addition, EMDR has been used to treat individuals with depression, eating disorders, and personality disorders.

What happens in EMDR therapy?

First the therapist takes an individual’s history, and then the therapist and client decide which distressing experience(s) will be the target(s) of the exercise, delivered via a side-to-side visual stimulus requiring lateral eye movements. The client will be asked to activate thoughts, feelings, and any body sensations related to the troubling experience. The eye movements are said to reduce the emotional charge of the memory, so that the experience can then be safely discussed with the therapist and digested, minimizing its ability to trigger anxiety.
