As a licensed professional counselor and a board certified, registered art therapist, I have found that participants in the art therapy process are able to address important issues such as adjustment to divorce, overcoming trauma, enhancing self esteem, managing depression, coping with loss, and increasing self-awareness. Artistic ability is not necessary for this process to take place. Any form of expression using the art materials will provide the opportunity for the participant to find resolution to conflicts. As an art therapist, I can assist the participant to move from non-verbal expression through art making to verbal communication.
While practicing art therapy, I have been fortunate in witnessing the healing that takes place through the creative process. Many of my clients have experienced a high degree of conflict resolution and self-awareness through the combination of art making and verbal therapy.
In addition to talk therapy, I sometimes use art therapy to help make healing easier for children and others who find it difficult to talk about conflicts they are facing. Using the art materials can feel less confrontational than verbal therapy alone. Making art becomes an additional means of expression that can result in insight and healing.
